View Full Version : Shortened Ponytail

Does anybody know of instructions for a shortened ponytail?
There is this tutorial (http://www.network54.com/Forum/242462/thread/1092658771/Shortened+Ponytail), but it's not what I'm looking for. I'd like to create a high, fairly short ponytail, where the hair is neither draped over something, nor sticking out the bottom of something :ponder: ...err, sorry, I'm not explaining this too well!
Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avZo0-xkyJ8&feature=channel_page) is where I got the inspiration (Susanna's hair in a marvellous production of Figaro). Her hair is at least TBL, so I'll have to wait a while before I can do that.
I've tried just making a "one-coil" cinnabun and tucking the remaining length through the coil, but since my hair is only just at waist, the "ponytail" is pathetically short!
Any ideas? I'd love to be able to create something a bit sporty and fun, which I'm starting to miss as my hair gets longer and tends to look rather "serious" and elegant :p

With iii hair, the single-coil cinnabun will use up a lot of length. What if you divided your hair, say, in 3 or 4 sections, and made a single coil cinnabun with each section at the base of the "ponytail"? That should use less length and leave a longer "short" ponytail.

Do you mean something like this?

I just made a knot in my hair and pinned it secure with a Flexi :)
To make it shorter I do 2 knots in a row and pin it with a bigger clip.
It shortens the ponytail, just like odangobuns (http://www.saveoursailors.org/odango/odango.html)

eresh, that looks gorgeous in your hair. It's a bit like what I've already tried...only, in my hair all that's left over is a sorry little stub :( I need more length!
danacc that's a great idea, thanks. I hadn't thought of doing anything like that. Here's what my very first attempts looked like :o :

Still needs a little (or a lot) of practice, but I think it could work. I just wish I had that arty touch with hair, though.

I make a knot in my hair too for shortened ponytails.

Could it work if you place the knot higher? I can get a tail if the knot is almost on top of my head, but not really if it's lower down. Though that's with mid-range ii hair, so it might take more length for you.

Would an upside-down French braid left in a pony-tail at the top shorten it up enough? I'm guessing not. I'm going to try and see how it works myself, though!

torrinpaige has something that may help you on her youtube page (sorry, I don't have the link bookmarked). Her's is very very cute, but not quite as short as the woman from the video.

Ok, so the upside-down French braid only works if you want the ponytail to come literally off your forehead. In other words, it works not so much. I do sometimes get a shorter ponytail by making a regular braid at the nape of my neck, securing it against my head at high-ponytail-height, and letting the length fall over the braid. It usually covers the pinned portion quite well if I use a small barrette and only fold a tiny bit of braid up. This is probably exactly what you're Not looking for, since you said you don't want a drape, but anyway here's how it looks on my head (sorry, my camera ran out of batteries before I could take a side picture, but you can't see the braid or barrette through the side either usually):

klcqtee, is this (http://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige?blend=1&ob=4#play/uploads/41/q5w2yMI0eEI) the video? Unfortunately, I need more length before I can do that, but wow, her hair's beautiful, and there's a treasure trove of videos there.
Zéphine, I actually tried doing a knot with my head upside down :p
Nueinsel, you're right, I'm looking for something that isn't a drape...but that looks really nice so I might try it anyway :)

^^^ maybe you can put an elastic at the area of the braid where you are going to pin so there isn't the drape effect. Then pin the braid through part of the elastic or right underneath it. And I'm going to try that out, too. It really does look nice.
Here is another version of the shortened pony by torrinpaige. This one doesn't tie the hair in a knot, so you can adjust the amount of length that is left out. My hair isn't long enough to do a knot either (with enough length left out), but this one works on me with just the twist folded up once, rather than doing a cinnabun all the way around (which makes it shorter than I want). Since it can be held with a rounded clip, it doesn't create the draped effect so much. The ponytail version starts at about 5 1/2 min. into the vid. The first part is pigtails with the same technique.

Oh, hey...how about this? http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=30400
Divide your hair into two halves - top half and bottom half - where you want your ponytail to end up. Then French braid the top half down and the bottom half up until they meet and make a pony out of the ends. That could work.

I was playing with my hair and came up with this variation that leaves a longer tail.

Not sure if it's the kind of thing you're looking for, but it's done like this:
1. Twist hair upward like you're making a French twist.
2. When you get to the crown of your head, stop and secure the twisted part, leaving the tail free.
3. Take a strand of hair from the tail and wrap it tightly around the twist several times, so that the twist folds over on itself, forming a sort of bun. Secure with pins. Repeat with a second strand of hair if necessary.
4. Arrange so that the tail falls how you want it to, securing with pins as needed.

This sounds good, too. Now I just need a few years' practice :p
Zéphine, that's a good idea, thanks. My version still needs a bit of work:

twist side

opposite side
Heidi_234, my ponytail is still at BSL with a topsy tail. But thanks for the reminder, I hadn't thought of topsy tails in years!

There's also this (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=125) option - not sure if that's what you're looking for, though, or if it'll work for you. ETA - oh, and this (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=109). You can replace the claw clip with a barrette or another type of clip.

I do the one-coil cinnabun but I make sure to wrap it far enough around the second time that the ponytail comes from above the bun -the hair stick helps hold it in place.
