View Full Version : Does anyone else actually like Avalon Organics?

I've been cone free for a while now and doing CO mostly but lately I've needed something to take care of some flakey scalp issues.

I try oiling, doing less washing, more washing, just about everything!

I finally decided to do a SLS free shampoo. I bought Avalon Organics Lemon Clarifying Shampoo at a health food store because this specific type of AO is cone free and SLS free.

I ran home to consult my hair bible and every thread that I could find on here had negative reviews for it! I was worried about trying it out but I used it last night and it actually was really good!

I have 90% less flaking than before, it didn't dry my hair out(but I did CO my head heavily afterwards like normal), and it seems pretty good to me!

I did balk at the price though, ouch.

Anyone else actually like it? Or am I so new to this that AO isn't anywhere near as good as say, a CV bar?

It's funny how different people can react so, well, differently to the same product. The Avalon Organics shampoo I used actually made my scalp worse. I was bummed out because it smelled so good and it wasn't cheap either. It was the lavender one...

If it's working well for you, keep using it!

I really like some of the products so far. I think it's a matter of finding the right one for your hair and needs... The honeysuckle rose shampoo smells great, but it's really gentle... I'm thinking it will be great for when I'm working out and thus washing hair every day during the school year. I'll probably try the green tea one for the holidays, when I tend to wash my hair 1-4 times a week and thus need a slightly harsher clarifying shampoo. I'd like to try the white camellia conditioner with that.

I also really like their face stuff. Well, some of it. The green tea and gingko spf 15 moisturiser seems great so far, and I expect to like the clay mask as well. The cleansing lotion was so-so... I'll use up my little sample and probably not get more. And I haven't tried the toner yet because I don't *use* toner... so yeah. A lot of their products are hit or miss, but I've liked the products that seem to work so far.

P.S. the shampoo DOES foam up (for me, at least) and get your hair pretty clean, you just have to massage a bit more vigourously and maybe repeat the wash to keep it from getting oily. JME.

My aunt likes the peppermint revitalizing one. But she's Chinese with coarse yet perfectly straight chin length hair. She doesn't want long hair but she wanted a shampoo without animal testing :) When I was at her house, I tried it but I didn't like it. My hair got very frizzy, dull and tangly. BTW, I believe the peppermint one has cones.

I like the lemon one too. I liked the peppermint one, but I got sick of it because the smell seemed to linger for so long and it's not a smell I like, but I do not believe that any of their shampoos have cones... I've never tried their conditionners though.

I use the rosemary shampoo on occasion if my scalp has been feeling itchy. This was the first low/non chemical product I started using many years ago when I started my process of using natural products but I think they changed their formula since then. The conditioners don't do anything for my hair and the mint and lemon shampoos seem to leave a residue and lavender gives me a headache. The rosemary shampoo works but only if I use it occasionally.

I bought the rosemary shampoo and conditioner last week. I've only used it once. My hair did feel kind of coated/waxy after I used it. Not really impressed, but I'll probably use it a few more times just to make sure.

Been using the lavender shampoo & conditioner for a while now, and it seems to work the best out of everything I've tried.

I use the lavender conditioner to CO my daughters' hair, and it works very well for them. It was too light for my hair, though.

Me, my hair AND my fussy scalp LOVE the lavender shampoo. Unfortunately the only store chain that carried it over here has discontinued it :-(

@Queenie: yes it did! I was so bummed about it!
Now they have Yes To Carrots, Yes To Tomatoes and Yes To Cucumber.

Great for my scalp and also cheap, but it doesn't have that great herbal smell like Avalon does.

I loved the Rosemary and Lavender one. Even my mother was crazy about the Rosemary one for volume. She never used organic shampoos until Avalon and now they're gone here...

My local stores don't have much in the way of variety for AO and I also can't drive due to seizures, so I just buy my shampoo and conditioner off ebay/amazon.

I love Avalon Organics Biotin B-complex thickening shampoo. I have tried others and always come back to them. I have not tried the lemon clarifying though.

SO I'm not a hair freak! Other people like AO too!

I do notice that after I use the AO and before I condition it feels bad. But I just use my conditioner like normal. Really this stuff is great for my scalp more than anything. I'm in love, too bad it's almost $10 a bottle and I'm trying to be mostly CO only.

Apparently people think $10 a bottle is expensive? I mean, I guess compared to Suave or White Rain, but I think it's proportionately about the same if not a bit cheaper than Giovanni, which is not too expensive for hair washing stuff in my opinion. *shrugs* I guess I'm used to buying John Freida and Pantene, which I think runs for about the same price. This stuff is a much better value than those, IMO!

I really liked the AO Tea Tree Mint combo. The bottles break really easily, though, and that is obnoxious. I never liked any of the ones in the flat green bottles, though.

If you check the reviews section, you'll find four glowing, 10-point reviews of Avalon Organics Lemon Clarifying Shampoo.

I tried the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner and it was nice... it seemed like I had to use a ton of it just to detangle and condition, but I AM used to Giovanni Nutrafix. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't know that I'll buy more when it's gone.

ETA: Bahaha. I just looked really hard at this thread and realised it was "Avalon", not Aubrey. Sorry! Lol, just ignore my rambling. I've probably confused people to no end now. >_< If it's any comfort, I was getting so agitated not being about to find these shampoos anywhere online! I use it, have been using it for years now.In my country, it's pretty much the best thing one can get within a fairly sensible price range. I don't consider it expensive, though. Not cheap, either, one should admit.

Unfortunately this line has disappeared somewhere and I can no longer find any SLS or paraben free stuff any more (asking for cone free is just plain lunacy so I don't even bother).

I've used the Tea Tree shampoo for scalp issues. It does help with my itchy scalp. But if I use too much it seems to make it too dry. Oops. lol

I used to use the lavender conditioner, but they came out with the fragrance free one so I've started using that. It's thicker than the lavender and I rather like it. I'll see after a few more washes how it is. (I only wash about twice a week.)

I just got a bottle of the peppermint conditioner because it smelled fantastic and I adore peppermint. I'll post back with results after I give it a few tries.

I had the biggest brain fart ever when buying this stuff, it has cones and I totally missed it  Hair felt awful, looks like I'll be giving this bottle away. Too bad, because it smells so good :(

Sorry to hear that. If you bought it from Whole Foods, they usually let you return it. (Just tell them you had the itchies or something.)

And some AO varieties have cones, some don't. I'm the crazy customer who stands there and reads the ingredients label. (The employees always come up a few times to ask if I need anything. "No, I'm good, I'm just checking the ingredients.")

If the AO you got has dimethicone(sp?) that one is water soluble and if you stand under the shower spray long enough it will eventually dissolve. (I'm on a cone free and I've noticed that works.)

I think the fragrance free Grapeseed and something else one has no cones.

I got my AO from TJ Maxx, they had it for $3.99 a bottle and I stocked up, I bought all they had, I should be set for shampoo for a couple of years! :D

They also had Natures Gate, 18 oz conditioner and poos for $3.99 and Giovanni Triple Treat conditioner in a liter bottle for $12.99 (I got the only 2 they had and use it as a leave in)

Here is a link to find TJ Maxx stores and locations:
http://www.tjmaxx.com/locator.asp

I was so happy to find those poos there! :D

(I dilute my shampoo by taking a sports bottle, adding an ounce or 2 of poo to an almost full bottle of water and shaking, that lasts me for 2 poos and I only use poo about 2 to 3 times a month now)

eta: I also had the flaking and crustiness even after going mostly CO, I discovered, it was the fragrance that was the culprit. I was using V05 like it was going out of style, and it was the thing that was causing my issues.)

I found a place online, Puritans Pride, that sells the AO conditioners, certain scents for buy 1 get 2 free. I got the Rosemary, it ended up being 3.99 for 3 bottles. They also have Lavender for 4.99 for 3 bottles and shipping is $4.95 for any size order)

I bought 40 plus bottles, it came out way cheaper, and even though I get tired of Rosemary, it was cheap! It does have cones though, but I can deal with that, it's better than the alternative for me, dry scalp and pick pick pick, bleed. :(

I used to *love* their conditioners before they put cones in them. The mint one was great for scalp washing.

They recently put out a single no-cones, unscented conditioner. I believe it's called olive grapeseed. It works quite well for washing, but I don't think it's available everywhere.

My sister used to use them all the time, and I would steal them if I was out. It never got on very well with my hair. It wasn't horrible, but it always came out feeling funky.

I don't, sorry. But I do remember them being cheap - perhaps at Trader Joe's (which I wish we had in Europe...)

The lavender is coney and both S and C make my hair feel weird.

Are Avalon Organics and Aubrey Organics the same or different? A few people seem to be mentioning Honeysuckle Rose, and I thought that was Aubrey organics...?

I have a bottle of Avalon Organics Lavender conditioner that I got at THE DOLLAR TREE! I should have bought more than 2, because I do like it. It is non-cone, and pretty thick, so it conditions my hair well. Smells terrific, too!

I use this as a clarifying shampoo about once a month and it does really good things to my scalp. Usually I use poo bars but once a month or so I notice i need a good deep clarifying scrub and this shampoo does the trick for me. and I love how it smells!

I use shampoo bars from isoaps now because I like those better, but Avalon Organics is on my top liquid shampoos list. I used to use them all the time, I didn't use them for scalp issues, but they seemed to work for my basic hair needs.

I love the smell of the lavender one and I love how my hair smells like lavender for a long time after. However, the last time I used it my hair felt gross and waxy. I washed it out with another hair product I commonly use, and had the same problem. I figured then I needed to clarify. I will give AO another shot on another night now that my hair is free of buildup.

I gave the stuff another shot. It made my hair feel terrible and I had to add a bit of my normal conditioner with it to make sure it worked right. I love the smell though, so I will use it up for the smell and just add some Garnier at the end to keep my hair the way I like it.

Oh wow, lucky you, I personally would have bought the whole stock at that price, and asked them if they had more in the back.

Was it recently?

Years ago I bought a bottle of the Lemon Clarifying shampoo at Big Lots. I'm sorry I didn't buy all the bottles they had at the time, because it was one of the best shampoos ever for my oily hair. When they changed the formulas, I tried a bottle of the Glistening Ylang Ylang formula, and I was so disappointed: My hair felt even oilier, and there was a waxy coating on it. This experience scared me from trying any of the other formulations, even though I am still thinking about picking up the Lemon Clarifying again. Still on the fence about this brand right now...

I really like the Avalon Organics Olive & Grape Seed Moisturizing Conditioner which is fragrance free. This stuff is amazing for my hair: it detangles in seconds, clearly moisturizes, softens, adds shine but does not leave a greasy residue. It doesn't have cones and it's very organic.

I have tried quite a few conditioners ranging from the usual salon stuff (Nexxus, L'anza, Joico, etc.) to organic brands (Aubrey Organics, A'kin, etc.) but this one is the most moisturizing conditioner I have ever tried, most definitely my HG condish.

I don't know what it costs normally but IMO it is quite affordable at iHerb.com: $5.90 for a bottle (http://www.iherb.com/Avalon-Organics-Moisturizing-Conditioner-Olive-Grape-Seed-Fragrance-Free-11-fl-oz-325-ml/14399?at=0), especially when the shipping costs in iHerb.com are very reasonable for an European customer such as myself.

I've tried the Lemon, Lavender and the Peppermint, and I like them all. Lemon is my favourite. I don't use their conditioners as I don't use cones.

Oh and the shampoo foams fine for me - and I have hard water.

I love the lemon clarifying shampoo, although I don't use it often. I never had a problem with excessive dryness or anything else, and it smells great to me. I used the lavender shampoo in the past and that didn't work so well. Right now I'm doing some experimenting with baking soda/conditioner mixes for washing, so I haven't used the lemon shampoo in a while, but it's definitely on my "recommend" list.

I have tried 2 of their shampoos, and I didn't hate them. I found that I had to wash more often, like every other day, to get the same clean as I get from my SLS based Suave Naturals. I also shedded more while using Avalon, and my hair didn't react the same way to conditioner...I went back to SLS based poo, and now only wash 2 times per 7 day week, 3 if I get pretty dirty. My hair likes this less washing thing much better. But I don't blame AO for it, I've never had the best reaction to all natural cleasing agents.

I been using the Moisturising Olive & Grapeseed one recently & it's not particularly moisturising, makes my hair frizzy & very tangled (i couldn't get a comb through it the day after washing to save myself!). I certainly won't be repurchasing.

Avalon Organics is my favorite!

I have just finished up my third bottles of rosemary S&C and I'm panicking after reading this thread and realizing that its being bought out by stores like TJMaxx and Big Lots. Please tell me they'll continue to make this product?!?

I use the Lemon Clarifying and love it! I get mine from Swanson Vitamins http://www.swansonvitamins.com where it costs $5.24. They have a flat $4.99 shipping so I get most of my supplements there and stock up on multiples of what I get.

*smacks forehead* I feel like a dope. Just found this again too, posted answer in wrong place. Sorry. I'm new, and in that awkward stage . . . you know, the one that starts when you learn to talk and ends after they read your last will and testament.

Anyway, I also have been using the unscented moisturizing Olive/Grapeseed/Borage/Primrose shampoo, and really love it. Shiny, soft hair that stays clean for a long time.

I'm seriously considering trying this line after I run out of something...
Lol, I have so much junk I need to use up. :brickwall:

But I was in Whole Foods today and couldn't stop sniffing their shampoos & conditioners. Right now my thoughts are between the Lavender and Ylang Ylang. I'm on a serious lavender kick right now. :cloud9: If that's over when I buy something new, I might go with the Ylang Ylang. If it's still going on, I'll get the Lavender. ;)

I'm a huge fan of their peppermint shower gel and body lotion, but sadly the corresponding shampoo didn't impress me equally. It's not the worst shampoo I've ever used, it's just...nothing special. And since I have other shampoos I like better, I've only used it a couple of times. I haven't tried any of the other shampoos, though, but now I doubt I will.
