View Full Version : How long does it take for your hair to naturally air-dry?

How long does it take for your hair to dry naturally without a blowdryer? For me, it all depends on the type of water that is on my hair. If I've been swimming in the ocean, my hair can literally be dry in like just 10 minutes, the salt content really dries out my hair! If I've been at the pool, well I shower right after but I notice even after I shower off the chlorine still dries my hair a lot faster than on days I have not been swimming. I will always do a CO after a swim and also every night. It takes about half an hour for my hair to stop dripping, then it will stay damp for over 3 hours before it fully dries, so it takes about 4 hours total to dry my hair.
In the winter, it could take actually over 5 hours for my hair to dry naturally. This is the season where I will actually blow dry just enough so that I speed up the process. I will almost always air-dry during the spring and summer unless I'm purposely blow styling my hair.

I'd say about an hour for me -- sometimes more, sometimes less, depending upon how hot or cold a day it is.

To naturally air dry thoroughly, it takes my hair 4 hours. :) It's worth the time though, because it's so much healthier.

I haven't measured the time accurately, but I'd say it is between 2 and 3 hours. It feels like forever!

between 2-3 hours. If it's really humid, longer.

My hair is extremely thick, so it takes >5 hours. The front pieces dry within half an hour, the roots within approx. one and half hours, the majority of the length and tips within 3 hours... but there is this annoying bit of hair at the back of my head that can take overnight, and then a few hours to get completely dry. weird.
Once I tried wearing it in a bun after washing, and took out the bun after two days. The inner layers of my hair were still damp. Very weird.

In the house, with no assistance, it takes every bit of 3 hours.
Out in the sun, it takes about 2.
This is why I rarely air dry my hair. I usually damp bun.

With no help, five hours minimum. It will look dry around the three hour mark but it's still damp underneath for another couple hours or so. In the winter, it will be a little longer. The joys of thick hair. :)

I would geuss about 4 hoursif it has been down since i got ot och the shower, but rarely let my hair air dry down if it hasnt been in bun or braid for a cuple of hours. I hate geting my clothes weet because of the fact my hair is weet so rather take longer drying time.

This is what confounds me about my hair... Upon observation it doesn't appear thick. (No special scrunchies needed) However it takes hours and hours to air dry or to do any kind of braiding or styling and it's very heavy and hot under here.

I depends on what I put in it and on the humidity that day.
Gel takes a lot longer than if I leave-in conditioner. Other leave-ins (don't use any currently) can take even longer. if I put nothing in my hair or just oil it dries in 45 minutes! Usually though, between 1-6 hours.

About 3 hours which after the shower I put an absorbant towel over my hair without twisting the whole strands instead of without air drying! I do air dry my hair naturally without blowdryer! I only put the towel of my hair for 15 minutes, then remove and pat lightly on hair again for about 1 minute and flip hair front and back to get rid of excess water!
But as naturally, it's about 3 hours to dry!
I do a trick of putting my whole hair inside without bending over with my hair in front of me! I stand up straight take my hair and twist about maybe a bit/ not much, and then over my head! Looks like it's shorter because without the bending! Then put it over my hair, great technique with medium length towels instead of long!

Mine depends on what I plan on doing with it, whether damp buns/braids, fully drying before putting it up, weather conditions, location I'm at while it dries, etc. I'd say somewhere between 1-3 hours. That's a rough guess though.
This (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=12114) thread was of similar ilk.

I voted 2-3 even though it can sometimes take longer. It really depends on how much water is absorbed by the towel before I take it off. And humidity...humid days mean a longer drying time. :(

It takes me between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the weather outside and the current moisture content of my hair. If my hair is dry, than it dries faster.

I picked over 5 hours because its taking 6-7 hours at the moment for my hair to dry, its winter here at the moment and it takes forever, especially if its raining out! In summer if I'm outside it can dry in as little as 1-2 hours which I love, can't wait for summer :p

I normally take a shower about an hour or two before I go to bed. I plop from when I get out of the shower until right before I get in bed, then when I wake up it's dry. If I wash my hair in the morning, it takes from 3 to 4 hours at least.

I don't consider my hair to be thick but it takes about 4-5 hours before it's completely dry (if left loose). After CO wash it can take up to 12 hours especially if the weather is humid. If I damp bun, it takes forever to dry. Actually it doesn't dry at all until I take it down! I'm not so sure about the benefits of damp bunning so I don't do that very often...

I answered 2-3 hours but that is dependent on leaving it loose and combing a couple times while drying. If I braid or bun it can be days. If I go outside on a sunny day or sit in front of a fan/electric heater, maybe an hour. 30 min or so if I partially dry with a blowfryer.

Depends what Products I have used. also depends on the style and on the tempature in the room where I am air drying.
on a hot day with my hair down. I can dry in about 1 1/2 hour
if my hair is put up or has a headband or something on. all of it will be dry except the part under the band.
on a cool day. it takes a little bit longer. maybe. 2 1/2 hours. but this all depends on how heavy handed I am with the Glycerin based products.lol. lol. if I am TOO heavy handed.
It could take all damn day

It's very dry here. . .so my hair dries pretty quickly.
At home, watching tv or some such, only a couple of hours. It's not bone dry but mostly dry.
But during the work week it can be mostly dry in about an hour: I wash my hair, very lightly towel dry, scrunch my hair to set it and then let it dry in the car on my way to work.
With just a little wind circulating around through a rolled down window or with the the heater turned on if it's chilly outsde, it dries really nicely. And is just about dry by the time I roll into work.

I rarely let my hair just air dry. I encourage the curl with some very low-heat diffusing most of the time. If I were to just let it air dry, it'd take over 4 hours to totally dry... probably a bit less in the winter, but I've never tried it (too cold! LOL!).
If I bun it damp, it takes about 12 hours.

3-5 hours here. When I visited eastern Oregon, though, it took... about an hour, I think. It was soooo dry there! I got really chilled-- I ended up wrapping my head in the damp towel so my hair would dry more slowly.

It takes me 2-3 hours to dry my hair completely, which is really annoying because it isn't super-long (just hovering around APL) -- I guess it's because of the season. But it necessitates taking showers at night since I don't want to leave the house with wet hair for work.

For me it depends on the weather conditions. If it is rainy outside, then it takes my hair longer to dry. If it is warm and sunny, it is less time. I have super thick hair so the drying time varies. I also leave the conditioner in my hair after a shower. I assume this is why it takes so long.
On average, it can take about 5-6 hours. I usually wait until it is mostly dry (damp) and then I rope braid my hair in sections. This usually makes it easier for the back of head to dry thoroughly which is usually the last place to dry completely.

This thread is fascinating! :) I thought my hair would be the kind to take one of the longer times to dry, but it's not. I find myself grateful for that, heh.
I put my hair in a towel for 15-20 minutes or so. After that, I oil my hair, comb it out very gently, and let it air dry. Sometimes, once it's 2/3 of the way dry, I'll loosely braid it, which cuts back on the frizz.

Usually three hours for me. However, I believe the ample moisture in the air generally slows the process. I have fine strands and my hair isn't all that long, but it seems to retain moisture pretty well.

2 hours. It used to take 1 hour when I still used shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in. Nowadays it takes longer, whether I oil it or not. I think it takes longer now because the hair retains moisture better, so waiting for it to dry isn't a big deal for me.

My brushable hair would dry in half an hour. Now that I have dreads, each one is like a little sponge that takes forever to dry, 6 hours + in the winter. Luckily I don't have to wash more than once every 7-10 days. I'm sure it will dry faster once the weather gets warmer though.

It actually depends. Assuming I wear my hair down, in the summer, it can go from towel-dry to bone dry in an hour if it's a hot day and dry. During other times of year, it usually takes all day. If I braid it or put it up (even in summer usually), it won't fully dry until I take it down again.

My hair is quite thick on top... so that hair, no matter how short it is.. dries in about 4 hours, and so does everything else. Probably the weather. :)

When my hair used to be thick, (yes believe it or not, I did have really thick hair at one point) it used to take more than 8 hours I think.
Now since my hair is a lot thinner, on a good day in the summer it takes about 20 minutes. Maybe double the time in the winter.

If I am inside , it will usually take about 4-5 hours.
But I remmeber when I used to wash my hair in the morning before work -would take about 2 and a half hours- (I work outside), I would have got out the shower at about 06:00, got into work at 07:00 , and by about 08:30 It would be dry.
Although I can't really do that now, its so cold outside that my hair would freeze if I tried that, haha ! so I wash at night now.

December 25th, 2009, 12:35 PM
Over night? 8 hours will still leave it damp (in the summer). During the day, it takes more than half a day. The underlayer will remain wet, while the sides will usually start to fluff & frizz (they dry up quickly). That's why I still have a blow dryer. Only in the summer am I willing to let it airdry completely.

My hair takes a surprisingly quick time to dry its really strange, I noticed it last summer when drying off from the pool my friend was shocked about how fast my hair dried. It wasabout the same length. Because it was longer, I thought it might take longer to dry, but I guess not.

It normally takes until mid afternoon at the earliest if I wash it in the morning and leave it down. If I braid it, it will still be wet at 10 at night. I've got really thick hair.
The other day I went out with my wet hair in a bun and the bus didn't come so I had to walk a couple of miles in the cold. My bun fell out with the walking and when I felt my hair it had frozen and I couldn't even bend it to put it back up! That has never happened to me before.

I'm not sure, I'll have to check the clock next time I wash it, but I do know that it depends on how I washed it. It takes noticeably longer to dry after CO than after shampoo -- generally, the more conditioner or oil in my hair, the longer it will take, and the harsher a cleanser I used, the shorter. Which makes sense, but is something I never really thought about before I started to CO.
If I put it back, now, it'll take forever. If I braid it wet before bed, it will still be damp in the morning; one time I tried rag curls and they were all still damp in the morning, which was a problem for the set.

My hair isn't very long. It's fine and med/thin with some curl on just the ends. I'd say it takes about an hour to two for it to dry if I leave it alone. I usually though, pull it up in a high, very lose pony with a soft scrunchy as soon as I comb it out. So even hours and hours later i have a few inches around mid length that is still damp from being covered by that stupid scrunchy. I've woken up in the morning with still damp hair!

Normally, it only takes about 2-2 1/2 hours for my hair to air dry naturally (indoors). However, if I'm in the car with the heat on, it can dry in under 2 hours. Likewise, if it's drying outside, it can be dry in about 1-1 1/2 hours.

It has been over 6 hours since I got out of the shower (regular s/c), and I haven't put it up or anything, just letting it air dry as normal... still fairly wet in the back, by the roots and several inches down. The top & the ends are dry. My hair takes forever to dry. Since I wash it every other day, it's pretty much wet every other day, all day. Pretty annoying.

I'd say 1-2 hours. Mind you, that's when it's been wrapped in a towel for a little while first. It'd probably take longer if I just stepped out of the shower and let it dribble until it was dry, but the only time I'd consider doing that is showering before sitting beside a pool on a summer day.

About 4 hours usually. I've actually found my hair that is in better condition actually takes longer to dry than the ruffled ends.

In the winter, it can take up to a day and a half for it to dry. In the summer, maybe 6 - 7 hours. I actually timed this yesterday because it was super-warm (85*F, uncommon for this time of year!) - I got out of the shower at 12:30, and wrapped my hair up in a towel for half an hour. Let it down, went out for the day. By the time we were eating dinner (7:30), it was dry. I was so amazed!

I also voted 2-3 hours! Usually about 2.5 hours and it's dry. The ends dry first, then the roots, then finally the middle and under layers... I really don't like the feeling of one part being dry and another party being wet... it feels unhealthy. So once it's damp but not dry that's when I usually oil and comb it. If I leave it loose it will take the better part of the daylight hours of any given day. Humidity will make it take longer, though. For example: If I shower before work in the winter (rainy season), my hair will still be damp around dinner time, even if I leave it loose all day. In the summer (dry-er season... if Portland has one of those) if I shower before work it will be damp until early afternoon.
Anymore I wash sometime between 7-9pm and leave it loose until the next morning when I get up (around 7am) and it's still damp no matter the season. In fact, it's still damp right now (10:26am) after a wash last night.
I find it sort of annoying, but then, the less I wash my hair the less I have to worry about it.

I live in a very dry climate, so my hair only takes a little over an hour to dry. But when I lived in the southern United States with the horribly humid, stagnate air... my hair would take all day to dry.

More than 5 hours. Actually it is 6 to 8 hours indoors depending on humidity and how I handle my hair while drying. If I tousle it a lot it dries a bit faster but gets insanely frizzy. That's why I normally just let it dry overnight.
If it is hot and sunny and I am outdoors my hair can be completely dry in about 3 hours.

Outside it takes half an hour.
Inside, with the use of my portable heater, it takes 45 minutes.
I use a special "fanning" technique that speeds drying (I hate waiting around for my hair to dry).

When I used to use shampoo and conditioner it took about 3-4 hours.
When I used to use conditioner only it took 4-6 hours.
Now that I use ktani's movie star oil shampoo it takes about 1 hour.
Obviously damp bunning or braiding does increase drying time.

About 2 to 3 hours before it is reasonably dry, the hair stay damp for hours more however.

Mine doesn't take very long probably about only about half an hour but it is pretty fine and only past my shoulders! One good thing about hair loss, well you've got to see the silver lining some how lol!

There's such a huge spread, what does drying time actually depends on? I can see that the thicker and longer the more time it takes, and apparently COed hair dries a bit longer on average.
But still it doesn't account for a few hours difference, based on the replies, it is porosity then? I always thought my hair must be rather porous 'cause it's wavy&curly and reacts to humidity but then it shouldn't take so much time to dry :?:

Most of my hair dries in a little under an hour, but it takes a a bit longer for it to be fully dry.

Well I usually have mine wrapped in a towel for a good 20 minutes after I shower... Once Ive taken it out it takes about 40 minutes or so to be completely dry. However I voted 1 to 2 hours because If I dont towel wrap it it takes more than an hour...

My hair will be reasonably dry in 3 to 4 hours but it's damp for many more so I chose 4 to 5. It definitely takes longer than 3.

I voted 1 hour, but that's usually when I've had it in a towel for a bit.
I would say about 2 hours without any other interference like a towel.

I voted 2 to 3 hours... but it's more like 3-4, and ONLY if I wear it in a ponytail. If I wash my hair in the morning and put it in a bun, it often happens that it's still not dry when I go to bed!

Hmm tricky tricky. It all depends, whether it's summer or winter. During the winter it can take more than 5 hours, while during the summer 2 hours. Boo I want super fast drying hair as well! :(

Umm...I can't really tell you for sure, because I usually blow dry my hair up to shoulder-length, then finger-comb the rest until it's untangled. Don't start at me, I blow-dry my roots because I'll get a cold/sore throat/probably both if I don't, especially in winter! :( In Summer I try to blow-dry much, much less
My hair's very fine, and when I finish finger-combing my wet length (half an hour - an hour and three quarters ?) it is already dry... so if I added the roots, I would perhaps choose the 1-2 hours.
Although I think that without the help of the blow-dryer, in Winter it would take more...2-3 hours??

It varies - if I'm out and about it'll be more or less dry within 2 hours, but not totally dry for about 4 really. If I'm indoors it's definitely upwards of 4, probably 5 to get it fully dry, and if I put a leave in treatment in it's longer again - like today, when it took about 7 hours! I have often woken up with damp hair after a 10 hour drying time, but lying on it obviously slows things down.

Mine takes about an hour or so, sometimes more and sometimes less. When my hair was at its longest, waist length, air drying took about 4 hours.
