So I went out last night and decided to try a faux bob. I liked it although I had problems with wispies falling out and the wind eventually wrecked it, but otherwise I think it looked cute. I could have used some more clips and it probably would have been more stable.

It's pretty covincing from a distance and two people I know actually exclaimed, "You cut your hair!"

Anyway, here are some pics. It was really easy to do.http://i532.photobucket.com/albums/ee322/jivete/LHC/HPIM2360.jpg

Even with hair falling out I thought it was a pretty cute look.

Anyway, something new and different to try. Smoothing serum would probably help it be sleek too. I just pinned mine under and used a tiny bit of oil.

That is too cute! I have tried that style so many times with no such luck, but you've just inspired me to try it again! I am going to go attempt it again right now, thanks a million and wish me luck that it comes out anything like yours. Very sweet photos too!

I love doing that too. It's fun to see what I'd look like with shorter hair. I haven't been able to make mine look good enough to go out but it's fun to play.

Wow that looks really realistic!

My fiance just pointed the screen and said "that's not long hair", so even he was convinced! Also he doesn't realise how many are growing their hair...

I'm going to try this as soon as you post a tutorial on how you did it.

Please?

Cute.:) I pull my hair up every once in a while to see what it would look like, but no matter how I arrange it I still look appallingly bad with "short" hair.

I'm curious also how this was done....I don't think a bob would look too fantastic on me, but I want to know how to do it just to scare/confuse my friends :)

That's a neat change without actually losing the long hair.

It looks great! I wish I could do something like that, but I think my hair is way too thick.

Off topic, but I love your shirt too :D

Despite the thread title, I actually thought it was a real cut when I saw the first picture. Cute style. :)

That is so cute! I love that you can try a short 'do without actually having short hair. How on earth do you do it? I really want to know.

I'm not sure how the OP did it, but here's a link (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=15791&highlight=shingled) to a thread with a photo tutorial on one way to do it.

Looks good on you!

Does it work on curly hair? I tried it with bobby pins and my hair looked like a lumpy octopus.

Here's a tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ton9wCOdrGI) that demonstrates how to achieve the style.

I also seem to get a pouffy mess when I try this. I think it may work with practice, and intend to try it again, but to reinterate a thread from the old boards, you can also fake a bob by using a ribbon or scarf. It might work better for some people. You tie the ribbon or scrarf a few inches from the ends. Then, you fold the "tail" up and roll the hair up to the nape of your neck. Finally, you pull the tails of the ribbon/ scarf around and tie them. (I used a shoelace in the pics because that's all I could find).

Oh, I like that! I actually think you make it look very nice. :)
Out of curiosity, I just grabbed a shoelace and kind of attempted this, but I have no idea how to get it to roll up so nicely like that. Or at all. o,o;

Can I just hijack this thread for two seconds?

Do you ever notice how short(er) hair is referred to as "cute"all the time?I always hear longer hair referred to as "beautiful",gorgeous, amazing, ect.I just thought I would point that out.

Hijack over.
Your hair looks lovely and I will probably try doing this. :)

Cute! I tried that when I had shorter hair and it looked pretty nice. My one friend at school thought I cut my hair! She was honestly confused because she knew I would NEVER cut my hair.

But now that it's getting longer, it bulges out too much to look normal. Haha.

When I used to do it, I had some headbands that went all around. Plastic with little pokeys to keep it on, on the top and the bottom couple inches was elastic and I would just take my hair and put it through the elastic so it was close to my head. Worked good with shorter hair.

It looks very cute on you though. :)

This is an interesting observation. I have heard long hair referred to as "cute" - when it is up in a particularly cute style. I think for myself I do in fact prefer "beautiful" to be the default term for me/my hair and just be able to be "cute" when I want to be if that makes sense at all.

That being said, the faux bob does look rather adorable. It would be fun to go out with my hair like that, although I'd have to deal with people I know freaking out. Maybe if I was in the right mood (a la April Fool's?) it could be the funnest part?

This is a fantastic trick! I'm definitely going to try it out. I also find it interesting that you see a real difference in how people respond to your hair when it is short v. long.

Thanks 23_seconds. You are very kind.

As for the rollup, Quixii, I just think it takes practice.

I tried posting this weekend but my computer at home has this annoying tendancy to lock up. After a long post, it can be pretty frustating.

Anyway, thanks for all the compliments! :flower: My method is similar to cuddledumplin's. I just rolled it and secured with alligator clips. It held okay, but needed a little more security, hair pins probably would have worked well.

My hair is relatively thin and short, and it compresses really well, but a lot of the tutorials on-line want you to tease hair for volume. :tmi: No thanks, but for thicker or curlier hair, it really is a cute look. See this tutorial...well, I was going to post one I found last Friday, but apparantly the First Lady wore her hair like this on Saturday, so now I can't find it. I knew I liked Michelle Obama :D Well, there are lots of examples at least.

Yes, good reminder about this change-up..good way to wear my hair next time I'm at my Mom's..hah..and then tell her I did the cut! Getting it to stay and be convincing is the trick..off to try it out.
(often think about getting a bob wig..just to take the 'pressure to cut' off that seems to seep into conversations w. various co-workers..)

I like, I like! :D

I haven't done a faux bob in a while, but I am also a fan of it. I think I will try it again on Halloween maybe, if I decide to dress up as a flapper or vamp.

Here is a pic from the last time I did it:

I can do a fake bob, too. First I make a nape of neck ponytail, then slide the pony-holder down my hair towards the ends, tightening a couple more loops of the pony-holder around the hair as I go down to about 2 inches from the bottom. Then I tie a ribbon around the pony-holder. Here's where it gets tricky. I then take a long chopstick and lay it along the nape of my neck, over the hair, then pull the hair up above the head, keeping the back close to my neck with the chopstick. Then I put the chopstick next to the ribbon, stretch the ends of the ribbon along it, then roll my hair around the chopstick until I get it tight to the nape of my neck, brings the ends of the ribbon up around my head and tie it off like a head band. Then I take the chopstick out and use it to pat down any lumpy areas. This is my result:

I can only wear this out to dinner or for sitting at the computer. Too much movement or the slightest bit of wind and the whole thing comes apart. It's fun for a change, though.

P.S. - It looks best done with damp hair smoothed down with a lot of gel.

Everyone's fake bobs look great!

The wind wrecked mine too Spidermom. Maybe a tighter, shorter one would hold more securely, but it was still fun to wear.

I actually loved the messier version of your faux bob, it looked more lived in and I loved how your shorter bangs fell out of the tuck, it created a wonderful asymmetrical A-line bob which is very in fashion. You are beautiful with both BSL hair and faux bob length!

Me too, I thought that the long pieces added interest.
Very pretty, I wish I could do this, but my hair is just too fluffy.
