I have to say I am so honored that all of you are trying my sock bun =D I had no idea that it would cause so much happiness and I am really glad it works on very long hair.

As for the accent, I am Slowakian-born Dutch so it could be a mixture of those, perhaps?

I can relate to the bun-hole-poking thing, somehow it seems to attract fingers xD Very strange indeed

All your buns look amazing, thank you so much for trying them :)

(Yeah, after getting invited by about 6 people I joined the LHC :P)

I love your videos!! That's so cool you joined LHC- you have beautiful hair!! :flowers: Thank you for making your sock-bun video, it's now become one of my favorite hairstyles!!! Plus, it gives me great waves after I take my hair out it. Win-win hairstyle either way, up or down!!! :D

You rock!! :cheer:

My first attempt at the Loepsie sock bun. 36 inches, or hip length.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2428/3835167455_a36a5ca77e.jpg

Another view, at the end of the day after it had slid down quite a bit.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2616/3835962400_48128983d5.jpg

And my waves after taking it out. No snapping & no apparent damage from it. I'll definitely have to keep trying this one.

Three cheers for Loepsie! :cheese::cheese::cheese:

I wore the bun today - and loved it - very comfy through entire evening. Will definetly be trying it again. Oh, I LOVED the waves the bun gave me!! They are beautiful (my camera ran out of batteries). I think I will definitely use the bun to create waves (maybe I'll use multiple ones and wear them to bed when I want a very wavy do instead or rollers :) No obvious damage or breakage from it :cheese:

LadyGunn - Gorgeous bun and waves!!

I suspected that it might slide down a bit by the end of the day (most buns do anyways) so I stuck a hair stick through it - no sliding down; it kept perfectly. :)

Loepsie- I have been watching the rest of your videos and L.O.V.E.D. them. I will definetly be trying more updos now!! I love how quiet a few of them are not just behind the head (where I can't see them) but rather at the front as well :D I love that :p

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody =D You are most kind

LadyGunn, your waves are amazing. Wish mine turned out like that :P Good job on the bun too =D

Susana - I would be honored if you would try all the styles =) I always want hairstyles to look good from the front, I hate it when it's only nice from the back. You can't see the back of your head :/ So if there's no hair at the front I at least make a nice parting or something. No boring fronts for me! xD

Happy to see you here, Loepsie!!

I don't have enough hair yet to do your version of the sock bun, but it'll be one of my main styles as soon as I can manage it!!!

I'll have to check out some of your other videos... Maybe there's something I can convert into a 'do for shorter hair? If not, I'll just have to be patient! :p

Hey All of You, have got some pretty cool rock'n do's going on! I've always wondered how some of the hair could be so large full and thick in an updo! I've always assumed that hair had to be at least 4 ft long to make one of those buns.

But since I've joined and one some research. . . I can't believe that a SOCK was behind all of this! I can't believe you people would stoop soo low to put a sock in your hair. . . THATS CHEATING!! lol J/K

For real though, they all look very cool

I've been attempting the sock bun for what seems like ages right now and I dont think I have enough hair to cover the bun fully :-/ getting frustrated everytime I do it and i see sock! Im using a small one too..

pradabacon
August 25th, 2009, 12:15 AM
Try a different sock, Ruvie. If your hair is 27" long, you should be able to do this bun. My hair isn't much longer than yours and I do this bun with a thigh-high Halloween sock, it ends up being what I would call medium-sized...I tried a smaller sock and it was a disaster...I also tried a bigger sock (two rolled together) and that was a disaster too! :D Like Goldilocks, you have to find one that is just right! You can do it. Just don't ruin all your good socks! :p

Ruvie
August 25th, 2009, 12:15 AM
For those with layers or short hair. Try a child's sock. I use a very small sock for mine and it holds great. Also for longer hair use a much bigger sock or even cut a old knit sleeve off a shirt and use that.
I took your advice and used a child's sock..FIRST try It looked perfect! I think its just because I have thin fine hair :) Thanks a lot, it looks lovely!!

I haven't tried this yet, but I really want to see if my APL-length layered hair will work in two little low side buns. It's a style I wear quite frequently but my natural buns are still pretty dinky... I'd love to get some extra OOMPH and this looks like it just might be the ticket!

I am wearing this bun today. It does not tangle any more than most other buns. To take it out, you just reverse the process - unroll it from the head out the length of your hair.

I didn't have a problem with tangles - just unroll it carefully & you should be fine. I did have the most awesome bun curls. :D

This is my "go-to" bun on an almost daily basis!
Its so comfy! and elegant but casual at the same time. Its very easy to dress up or down, and i always get loads of compliments on it!
Ive not had any issues or tangles with unrolling it (yet)

I've tried this bun countless times and just cannot get it to work! I always end up with this weird, loose, crazy looking thing with hair falling out all over the place. I don't have any layers and I still can't make it work. Please help!

heidihug
September 17th, 2009, 11:07 AM
Paperwhite, I think your hair might be too short to make this bun work. Have you tried a regular sock bun (instructions are in the articles section, I think)? This modified sock bun is especially nice for people who are no longer able to do a regular sock bun because of too much length.

I've got a few "forms" which you roll your hair around and then pin, if you're going for a like roll, or snap the ends together, for a great bun. MUCH easier to use than the sock with no remaining hair version demonstrated here!

They came in different lengths and different colors (light and dark brown, blonde), so I got several.

I've been doing it several times without problems and me and Paperwhite have the same hair type, and the same lenght (~21"). Lenght might not be the issue. It's easier to do two though, so doing one might get easier when the hair is longer.

I don't have a trick to make it work, but if I don't look in the mirror when I do it, and go on the feeling only, it works more often than when I do use a mirror. I'm sorry I can't help

ETA: but I have layers... Maybe they're a help while doing this bun (making the hair "thinner"?)? Oh well...

Thank you for sharing this, I actually had never heard of a sock bun, but I think I'm going to try it tonight, meaning I'll get my husband to do it, because I barely can do a regular one. I look forward to trying it, it looks like it could be pretty gentle on your hair.

I think I'm scared.

I need buns that make my hair look -smaller-, not bigger! I've tried a few buns (cinnamon and double-braid, mostly) and they generally look like I've got a second head growing out of the back of my head. =\ I just have too much hair. I'm thinking I'll skip on this one, though it does look very cool on others!

Aer
September 18th, 2009, 03:52 AM
I did it!! It was alot easier for my husband to do, he saw the video too, and wanted to try it on me. He said it was a alot easier than he thought it would be. I used a white sock, I was a little concerned that it would show through my dark hair, but it didn't. It actually is more comfortable than a traditional bun, and as I suspected before, it seems gentler. This is going to be my official bun, I really like it, I think even if it came out bread loaf shaped I would keep it around because it is easy to wear and it seems to stay put.

Thanks, Hootietoot!

The hairtoy is a basic black wire hair comb that I added some silver plated wire-wrapping to. The bun wants to tip back away from my head, so the comb helps. :)

Wow, I am amazed at how easier it is to make than the way I used to do (picture in profile). I just tried it and the bun was HUGE. Stayed in with no other hair toy added. I'll have to get my camera out of storage so I can take pictures again and also post pictures of hair sticks I've made. :)

Couldn't get to sleep last night so I found an unmated sock and finally gave this a try... please pardon my greasies!

First time around it was pretty gnarly
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2559/3954529229_34777abf57.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2647/3954529239_ba4bac2634.jpg

So I brushed with my new BBB and used some jojoba on the ends... much better results the second time around!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2649/3955309114_7bec018d56.jpg

I did not secure the base with anything, and no matter what I did I couldn't get it snug enough to feel secure, but I found that grasping the bun and twisting it against my head (think like the arms of a clock - I didn't pull it away from my head, just rotated the whole pile to get the base tighter) then securing it with a clip worked just fine. I didn't like the look of the clip, so I want to try again once my new fork arrives and see what it looks like then. I definitely see potential for a new go-to style here! I love the way it looks, since my fine, thinnish hair would have to be much longer than APL to get a bun that size without 'help'

In any case I deemed it sufficiently Done to wear outside the house (what can I say, my standards have slipped), and took it for a walk to the supermarket. No comments. Oh well. :p

No shame there...How else can we learn to have patience with new hairstyles? It's good to see that in reality people don't have perfect hair all the time, contrary to what we're told on tv.

Holy giant buns, batman! I just stumbled across this thread and read the whole thing. I'm clearly going to have to try this when I get home tonight. I know I've got some lonely unmated socks lying around....

Haha, I'm getting a kick out of seeing all the man-eating sharks-- err buns here 8D

Does anyone know if that girl is Dutch? She kinda sounds like it, but her accent is really good compared to a lot of other Dutch people's...

ETA: Nevermind, I saw another video oh hers and she mentioned going to Elf Fantasy Fair, which is is Dutch 8D So yeah.

EDIT 2: XD Okay... nevermind again. I just read through ALL the comments and I saw that YAY Loepsie is here XD

I tried to do this bun over and over this weekend but just couldn't get my hair to roll around the sock. Is there a trick? Besides doing it over and over again? ;) I used a trouser sock, maybe cotton will grip the hair better?

I wish I'd taken a pic, but I didn't, the other day when I tried the rolled variant of the sock bun.

I got a bun - easily, the first time I tried it (never happens to me) - and ended up with a sock bun that was a little over double the size of my regular sock bun. Even my hsuband came home and asked me what the hell I'd put into my hair to make such a big bun out of my [thin- fine - scrawny] hair, and when I told him it was one of my regular sock bun rolls, he made me take it out to 'prove' that claim. lol

Hubby was kind, and didn't call my hair thin or fine or scrawny - those are my honest descriptive words for my own hair.

The rolled variant sock bun held my slippery hair all day long and none of my hair escaped the bun, nor did it feel too tight or uncomfortable in any way.

I'm hooked on this version of sock bun, now! :cheese:

I've thought about trying Loepsie's sock bun version - I'm kinda scared of what the result might be, though. Will have to ... for fun's sake, if at all - not sure it'd be wearable outside :D .

For some reason, I just cannot get this bun to work! I've tried it over and over and...nothing. I end up with a slippery, straggly looking mess that's no picnic to unravel and detangle :( I'll keep trying though, everyone's pictures are pretty inspiring :) I'd love for this to work!

My hair is super baby fine and thin, and it's only APL - plus it tangles esily.

I ponytailed at the back of my head with a covered hair elastic without any metal tip. Not too high, and not too low. Middle of the back of my head.

Then, I put the ponytail through the sock roll (old cotton-blend dress trouser socks) and slipped it down almost to the ends of my hair.

Holding my hair up over my head (and using a stand mirror for the double mirror technique to see the back of my head without using a hand to hold the hand mirror), I began to roll my hair up around the sock roll. I used my fingers to whirl my less-than-even ends around the sock first, and then I slowly started to roll upwards.

As I rolled upwards, I kept my hands holding my hair above my head. I watched carefully, rolled extremely slowly (it took me about 5 minutes just to roll my hair - and it's only about 8 full revolutions), making sure to keep adjusting my hair to cover all around the roll fairly evenly. I kept this slow rolling going.

Finally, when I was about one full revolution from thetop/the end (maybe one and a half?)... I stopped, and inspected my hair from all angles, to make sure it looked fairly evely distrbuted around th bun. I fussed the hair gently for a while. Then I eyeballed to see if I thought the rest of the bun rolling would be 'right' (even) and not too tight or too lose. Believing it to be 'right', I finally continued the rolling up of the bun.

Once the bun was finished, I took my hands away. Lo and behold - the darn bun "stayed put"!!! It even stayed solidly in place as I gently moved my head side-to-side and up-and-down... and as I tilted my head around to inspect it from ALL angles. WOW!!

Still not trusting the bun to stay in place all day long, I decided to use one of my hair forks to hold it in place - just in case. I placed a four-prong brass/silver/copper fork into the bun, securing it.

I'm quite certain that I needn't have bothered with the metal fork, because when I went to unroll the bun before bed, that night, I had to unroll the bun just as slowly and carefully (if not more so) as I rolled it up. The bun wanted to stay. My hair wanted to keep itself in that bun. Only my extreme care kept me from pullling or tangling my hair.

Even though a standard sock bun takes a minute to make, expect this bun to take 10 or more minutes to make. BUT, it stays put all day long... even without a hair elastic or scarf around it (like in a normal sock bun).

I've tried this one sooo many times. But I can't seem to get the first step right. How on earth does everyone do the first rotation and still have their ends tucked in  ?

I watched Loepsies video closely, but her method (fold hair over sock, twist it and tuck under sock, then rotate) doesn't work at all for me. Any suggestions ???

I read this whole thread yesterday, and I washed my hair last night, so it would be good and grabby today. I am so excited to try this, because I want to see my gigantic bun and the reactions it will garner on my trip to town today.

Marjolein, do you have a blunt cut, or more fairytaled ends? This works a lot more easily if you have fairytale ends, as you can just work all the ends in as you roll. If you have blunt ends where a lot of the hair is the same length, I can imagine that this would be very difficult to do. Maybe if you dampen the ends a bit with water or perhaps oiled them, so they kind of "stick" to the sock as you roll?

When I start rolling all of the hair is on one side of the sock, then I redistribute it as I roll up. I have lots of revolutions to work with, not sure how this would work with shorter hair.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

...expect this bun to take 10 or more minutes to make.

Maybe the first few times, but once you get the hang of it, it's really quick! The second time I made this bun, it took me 3-5 minutes start to finish. I found that twisting it one way or the other after every couple of rolls made it cover the sock more evenly and made it go faster because I didn't have to stop to mess with it after every roll.

I get up 15 minutes before I have to leave for work, and I was able to pick out my clothes, get dressed, feed the cats, brush my teeth, and make this bun in that time.

The bun stayed very well for about 9 hours before it started to sag under it's own weight. Even then, I was able to roll it down a few inches and tighten it up again. Love it! :crush:

Thanks Heidihug! Your explanation about the fairytale ends vs blunt ends makes a lot of sense to me. I actually have superblunt ends and a very shallow U-cut. It just feels like there's way to much hair to fold for only two hands. But I'll try it with damp ends as well!

I love this "rollerbun"! It is possible to make a loose one without having it fall appart immediately! I put in a couple of amish pins to make it less neat.

Thank goodness for Loepsie! And where in the world was this thread before? I totally missed it. Anywhoodle, I gave it a try and wow, it really does eat my head...in the most awesome way possible. Granted I haven't mastered getting it super neat and even yet, so I might try twisting it around as some of you suggested. Oh, I also have blunt ends and how I managed them was leaving about 4 inches of hair at the bottom of the sock once I slid it down my pony, then I tucked them by scooping a little section over to the side slightly then into my sock. Repeat until you use up all the ends. After the ends were all tucked in, then I started rolling. Oh, and I did it by pulling my pony over the top of my head until I had a couple of rolls in...just to supervise my ends. :) Anywhoodle, here are my pics.

That's HUGE, Torrin Paige! Absolutely enormous.

I tried mine this morning and it went well. My Sweetie said "That thing's an entirely separate freeking entity!!!"

The only thing that irkled me is I don't think I put it up high enough. I'm not used to having a ponytail go to a bun, so it kind of weighed more than I'm used to, lower on my head than I'm used to, and it got to pulling. I took it down and may try again without the ponytail as the base. Someone mentioned doing it that way. Or I need a tighter ponytail...

Here's mine: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=5404&pictureid=70691

Thanks to all, especially StephanieB for your very specific instructions! I was able to finally make this bun after many so/so attempts.

I also rolled an athletic ankle sock inside out, so the "rough" ribbed material would give my slippery hair something to grab onto.

This is awesome. I never thought I could get my hair into a decent-looking bun at this length, but I just tried it with great success! I did have to put an elastic around to hide some of the ends because I could only do a couple of rolls.

I am eagerly awaiting the bun curls, since it is damp now. Hopefully the ends aren't too weird.

Yay! I have a new updo! I probably could put hairsticks in for show, too.

Yeah I also think that method looks very damaging to hair......
I have only BSL (but no layers) and my hair works perfectly in a normal (the first variant) sock bun. With longer hair lengths I think using torrinpaige's method of making the remaining hair after covering the sock into a braid which wraps around the bun, is the best idea.

Awesome.. I can't wait to be able to do this..or the Leia (one each side).

Question: Do you think that the sock fabric draws much moisture & oil from the hair? Like would it matter what the sock was made from?

Yes, I have years to worry about it but I wonder.

At any rate, it is most excellent-looking!:rockerdud

I donīt think this method is more damaging to the hair than the other one. But I will not use either a lot since they both involve elastics.

Thank you for the compliment. About the sock drawing moisture from the hair, that is actually a good question. My hair was pretty dry to begin with so I had applied some shea butter oil to my hair. I then used a black cotton sock I rolled up. I wore it for most part of the day, so when I took it down the sock did absorb some of the shea butter oil. As I mentioned I used a cotton sock. My 1st try with a black knee high didn't go so well(hair kept getting caught)So i switched to a cotton sock(aside from some oil absorption, there was no hair being snagged) This came out very nice, not something I would do all the time, but it's nice when you want that huge bun look:) Hope I helped:)
