I went to the salon today to get my hair trimmed (btw the stylist did a great job, she hardly cut any at all. She did what I asked!), and the stylist told me I had dry scalp, and I had flakes! I've never had that problem before, and she recommended Biolage shampoo for dry scalp. I didn't buy it though due to it having cones in it.
What can I do to take care of my dry flaky scalp? I use coconut oil and use suave shampoo and conditioner. Please help!

Heavy(I mean VERY HEAVY as in a few good spoonfuls of oil) scalp oilings and possibly turning those into hot oil treatments. My scalp is so dry it cracks and bleeds, and this helps me a lot. Olive oil is great as well, since it's cheap and easily found.

I too have dry scalp.....in places  not all over. Thanks for the great information. How often do you all do the oil treatments?

I don't, but you have to try what's best for you. Try heavily oiling before washes and/or slightly oiling after washing. Try to figure out what works best :)

Deb, it's generally fine, but darn winter weather! It happens to my regular skin, and very thankfully oils exist and I'm in good health, so I heal quickly. My dermatologist thought I had oily skin! XD It's a pain, but on the bright side, I don't get much acne, and I get to try all sorts of fun lotions and oils! :)
Redpepper, I generally do them about weekly, but do them 2-3 days in a row at first when you're not going anywhere important, and then try weekly, and if it's too much, reduce it. Some people can get away with monthly. I have EXTREMELY low natural oil production, and I put oil in my hair regularly to compensate. Rather as most people with flakes, they just have drier skin.

Even I have flaky scalp. I do weekly heavy oiling and after shampooing when the hair is dry I apply diluted ACV on the scalp on the flakes. That helps a lot.

Some women use CO washing to heal their very dry scalps. Maybe that would help. Good luck with whatever you try! :)

How about giving castor oil or almond oil a try for heavy oiling as they are both considered best for dry scalp and i would recommend Biolage shampoo and hair mask hydra therapi of the same for you as they worked wonders for me too.

then do you take off the oil by shampooing the next day or just rinse with water?

My scalp has been pretty dry and flaky lately too (I've never had dandruff in my life until recently. I've started massaging my scalp with Coconut oil the night before wash days then putting it up in a french braid (seems to keep the oil all tucked in and away from my pillowcase as that always leads to breakouts for me...). Its helped, but be careful- the first time I put oil on my scalp I had a spot of broken skin (from scratching) and it kinda stung at first. Now it feels lovely when I do it though - I think my skin is starting to even out.

uuhm.
I don't know for the dry scalp.
but I know that Lavender helps against flakes. :)
Your hair gets shiny of that too.
Just make tea of it, or use Lavender Oil. :)
also cocos oil, sage, nettles, Rosemary, Basilicum, amla,... :)
(amla darkens the hair too)
