View Full Version : Styles for shorter kinky hair

I know there aren't very many of us on this board, but I thought I'd make a thread for styles for kinky hair. Also for shorter hair, especially since the shrinkage of kinky hair makes it functionally quite short even if it's not that short when stretched. Please contribute, anyone!

I have a few, and I'll put one hair style per post. I'll start off with this one:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v194/mwedzi/hair%20-%20part%202/plumeriacomb.jpg

This uses this kind of comb:
http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=16704754

I really like it because it's hard to get combs with the teeth set close together into thick kinky hair.

The style is done on a medium size twist out (from about 25 twists).
Step 1: gather some hair from the front to middle sides of your hair, as if you were going to do a "half up" pony tail.
Step 2: twist or coil that hair and press it to the center of your head
Step 3: grab the hair from the bottom half of your head and bring it up and over the twist/pony/ball of the top half
Step 4: Push the whole bun down lower on your head
Step 5: Use the comb to hold in place, inserting from the top of the bun
Step 6 (optional): Fan out the bottom of the hair so it looks like an inverted fan.

I don't have a style to contribute but I'd like to say that's a very beautiful style!

Oh what a nice style! I love it!
Not really much productive to add, it's been a while since my hair was shorter :(

I love it! :D

I have some bun styles I can share. None of them are my own of course, I just swipe everyone else's ideas and find ways to work them for me.

Okay actually... this is one I swiped from you mwedzi! Yours was a "mega bun," I just made mine smaller. It was a puff that I tucked and pinned the ends with bobby pins to make a bun.

Very nice! I often make mine not so mega, too. But it's a style that can be done on fairly short(er than ours) hair.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments! Okay, here's another

I call this one the Flying Saucer bun:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v194/mwedzi/hair%20-%20part%202/saucerbunback_2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v194/mwedzi/hair%20-%20part%202/saucerbun2_2.jpg

How to:

Do a small diagonal part in the front.
Roll hair from the front on one side all the way around the head to the ear on the other side, bobby pinning as you go along
Holding the roll just behind the ear, use your other hand to roll the other side back towards the ear
Pinch the top of the two rolls together and clip (used small Flexi8 here) This leaves you with a ponytail just above the ear.
Take the hair and ball/roll it up
Pin at the bottom of the hair (used an xsmall Flexi8 here).

^^^I am definitely trying the flying saucer out on my next day off work! :D

I have been looking at infinity/figure 8 buns lately with envy because my hair isn't long enough to do them yet. I did one for a friend of mine with thick waist length hair the other day, and a little light bulb went off in my head.

I managed this today, I think it's a good knock-off:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c256/LadyLibra1982/infinitybun.jpghttp://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c256/LadyLibra1982/infinitybun2.jpg

I made a ponytail on wet hair, and then divided it into 2 large twists. Once it was mostly dry, I undid the twist on the right and twisted the hair in one big coil. I looped it around to make half of the infinity shape, pinned it with 3 bobby pins to hold the shape. Then I did the exact same thing with the other twisted section of hair. You can also add a hair stick or other hair toy to dress it up. I will probably stick flowers around the edges. :D

That is a great idea. Maybe if I blow out my hair just a tiny bit to get some more length out of it I'll be able to pull this one off. Blow drying it will help me get rid of some of the thickness, too. Otherwise I imagine it will just look like 2 blobs, lol.

Okay, here's another:

http://images51.fotki.com/v1544/photos/7/1197897/7711658/stickwrapuptop-vi.jpg

The how to (video tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMoLRI7_wrU ):
* Put the hair in a ponytail
*Insert the stick in the upper portion of the ponytail
* Divide the ponytail into two halves
* Cross the halves over each other
* Bring each half up and over the stick diagonally
* Continuing with the above action, bring the hair behind the stick and back down. The two halves should now meet in the middle under the base of the ponytail
* Twist the remainder of the two halves and tuck it into your hair

Here's another. This one is with a hair zing. Either roll the hair up to the center of head or do a giant flat twist to the center of head and affix the comb. This style was done on a twist out.

They are all so wow! XD I especially love the "flying saucer bun". Gosh, you may get infuriating shrinkage from hair like that, but it sure lends itself to some absolutely incredible styles! (Really makes me wonder why so many African women straighten their hair... you can't do that any more! TT^TT )

Mwedzi, thanks for posting these awesome styles! I love how versatile and thick your hair texture is! I will be trying out some of these styles (especially the flying saucer ^_^). I wonder if it will do for my oddly thin, yet medium-coarse 3b/3c hair? *sighs*

Coarse, you say? I would be interested in pics, this sounds like my SO's hair. Except his is on the thicker side (dense).

Sure thing~ Let me dig one up. I got one texture shot of my hair in a ponytail (when my hair was shorter though, so it looks extra textured, you know how short curly hair does). I'll be back when I find it.

I second the notion of loving this thread. Sadly all I can do right now are doughnut/sock buns and twists. I may try the mega bun when my layers start to grow out more even though bobby pins and me don't get along and the wider spaced ones always seem to slide out.

So, Wednesday's come and gone. Anyone give any a shot, eh, eh? :eyebrows: Frizzball, I'll be back with styles from when my hair was shorter. :)

And thanks for the positive comments on my texture. :D Never really got those until finding hair boards.

Here's another done with a knitting needle:
http://images44.fotki.com/v1535/photos/7/1197897/7711658/1stickupdo_2-vi.jpg

Gather hair into a low ponytail with your hand
Fold tail of ponytail to center of head.
Grab hair from either side and fold to middle
Use stick to *clamp* hair down.
I think your hair must be kinky and not too slippery for this one to hold like that.

Um... yeah about that. I've been wearing the same lazy half-tucked bun since that day. Not even detangling either. Just re-wetting and throwing it back up there like a lazy bum.

Don't judge me! :o

I'm sitting with my avocado DT in my hair right now - I added baby food banana to it this time. I have a feeling I'll be spending most of the night detangling. :(

State Fair is in town though - we're going Tuesday! :cheese:I think I'll do the flying saucer for that. I wanna be cute! :D

I tried one...I previously posted it in the Curly Hair Updos & Buns thread. I call it, the Secret Bun

Since I don't have a camera, it would be absolutely cool if one of you ladies could demonstrate your own version of this bun.

1. Pull hair in a ponytail in one hand (don't band it)
2. Then separate the ponytail into two sections and do a two strand rope braid/twist
3. Then roll the hair into a ball, like a bantu knot
4. Finally, part an wide enough opening into hair behind the knot, making a little pocket.
5. Fold the knot backwards into the "pocket" and tuck it in. It should be snug.
Optional: A hair stick can be weaved through to anchor the style.

Oh and I renamed it...The Secret Knot (since you can't see it!)

Sounds cool. My hair isn't long enough (read: too kinky-thick with too much shrinkage) to do this style. I'll try the next time I do a blowout or weak flat iron.

I have some knitting needles like that, and never would have thought to use them in my hair! Of course, they almost always have some knitting on them, so it might be awhile before I can try that.

http://images36.fotki.com/v1179/photos/1/1197897/5833215/hairzingupdo1-vi.jpgI loooove this hair toy, wondering where you got it. I am pretty sure I need some more hair toys. And that flowered comb you have in your first post in this thread...I went to the maker's site and the flowers are gorgeous! What are they made of? She doesn't say anything about how she makes the flowers and it is hard to tell from the pics.
