What do you guys think? 'Sand dollar' I hope this is a good enough pic that you can see it. :cheese:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc224/Dementia1013/IMG_0488.jpg

It was inspired by the woman with the flower on her head in one of the banners that I see on here sometimes. I think it's an add for Garnier or Pantene or something.

So I ponytailed all of my hair and made 5 english braids, then I ponytailed that about halfway down. Grabbing the bottom pony I pushed it up against my head and secured with pins. I fanned out the braids to look like petals then secured them with pins as well. The tail that was left over I rope braided and twisted into a small rose bun right in the middle of the flower to cover up the elastics. And voila!

Do you guys like it? It hasn't been created already has it?

Hmmm looking at it now, I suppose a floral name would better suit it... assuming it hasn't been done before. Suggestions are welcomed. :D

I like the way this is displaying the hair nearer the scalp as braids while the ends become a dinky bun. My ends would be tapered, skinny braids with lots of sticky out bits so this would be a fancy way of having braids in the thicker hair and bundling up the skinny bits. Excellent Idea! Petal bun? Daisy bun? Braid Bloom?

I totally agree...tho five braids in my pony are still gonna be dinky. :p

...and I like the SandDollar name, too.

Hey, that is similar! It has the middle bit and the five petals and even the color!:D It's kind of like a traditional five-point star, so the style is like a star-orchid bun or something.

Not really no. The stiffness of the braids helps hold the 'petals' in place. I think I used one pin on each a few to hold the center than a couple more on the rose bun. A handful, but not a huge amount, and I have some pretty thick hair.. for my length anyway. :D You ladies that Are classic and below will probably have to use more. You should ask Torrinpaige, she actually did it today for her errands! lol. I know she's got some mighty thick hair. :D

I think I'm like Dementia's Dendrobium or DD for short.. :D

Like Dementia said, not really, which was kind of surprising! I only used 15 bobby pins (three per petal) and four good days hair pins (for the middle). The sparkly pins I added were just for garnish, because I have magpie eyes and can't resist the rhinestones. :) It was also pretty darned fast, even with the braiding...maybe 10-12 minutes? And it is comfortable! The weight of my hair is dispersed quite nicely. Definitely making this one a part of my regular repertoire.

An update: So I wore it all day and it didn't move at all...not even through 5 hours of drumming (it was band practice night). Also? It never hurt! No headache, no itchiness due to pins (there were so few) and an easy take-down. Thank you, Dementia, for a fabulous new 'do! It's definitely a winner. I bow down to your hair prowess...I can come up with stuff, but almost none are as comfy as this one. Woot! Oh, and it got "Wows!" all around from the "lay people." Those would be my bandmates, hubby, and the peeps at the grocery store. I told them all they should see it in purple.:bounce:

I vote that it should be called the Petal Bun.

Torrin, 5 hours of band practice?! Holy cow, I knew it was sturdy, but not THAT sturdy. :D :cheese::cheese:

This is so cool. This is actually the very first 'do that i've ever come up with on my own, so it just warms my heart and brings a great big smile to my face reading all the wonderful praise.

Thank you all so much for the wonderful comments and compliments. For those of you that do try it, please post pics I would love to see it on others. :D

Oh, and Eresh? I'm totally stealing the fan bun for one of my special occasions. ;) That turned out really cool. I love it that we got two killer hairstyles from starting the same way. The LHC really has a deeply creative streak. :happydance:

I really love this style, Dementia! It looks gorgeous on you, and especially with your colour, I think. :) I did try it, but wasn't very happy with my attempt. I found it tricky to get the loops arranged correctly.

It's similar --but way cooler!-- to a Pride & Prejudice (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=471208&postcount=968) 'do I tried once.

Nah - you should definitely claim it, and name it. Yours is like an extreme-Regency hairdo! :D

Aaaaah that's why I couldn't do it with only my own 2 hands ;)
I didn't first secure the 2nd elastic to my head...I started making petals right away.
Thanks so much for this video!!

Thanks Torrin!
It's the same base, totally different bun :-)

I checked out the tutorial, it was a lot of fun to watch, as well as informative.
I like the name petal bun and DD, but mainly DD because if two women standing together had the same bun in I could say 'Hi, I like your DD's' :P
I will definitely be learning this for the future, Dementia!

I've never seen anything like this style before! Sadly my hair is so thin that each 'petal' would be exceedingly skinny. Oh well, I hope other people post pictures of themselves sporting this style, so that I can enjoy it vicariously.

Oh sweet purples!!! Oh man, this makes me want purple hair again so badly :( OOohhhh it aches lol! I always dreamed of having long purple hair when I was doing the purple thing.

Maybe in the near future..hmmmm. Bad bad me. No more bleaching!

Oh yeah, totally awesome hair style!!! I love it as well :)

I love this and aim to try it soon. petal bun is lovely for a name, but buttercup bun just rolls off the tongue.
