View Full Version : When does your hair look the best?

zen_oven

Does anyone out there feel like their hair looks the best on certain days? What I mean is does your hair look best on wash day, the next day, two days after, etc etc. . .

I'm a poofball on wash day, but my hair looks awesome on the second day! The day after it still looks okay but not as good. If my hair could always be second day hair!

So, when does your hair look the best?

Great poll! Mine is best when freshly washed.
ETA: I have a oily scalp and I wash every second day.

My curls get all messy when I sleep, so I can only wear them down on wash day. Therefore I think my hair looks nicest on wash day :) However, I used to have 1b/2a hair, and I remember it was much nicer/less puffy on the second day.

The day after a wash my hair is (usually) frizz free and straight. Right after a wash my hair is very frizzy (I think from damage) and wavy after a day It is better.

My hair looks best on washday before I have to braid it for sleep. I don't touch it while it's wet and it dries in nice wurls.

June 24th, 2009, 03:17 PM
After I wash I put it up in a bun, I don't take it down until the evening and that's only to braid for the night. In the morning though it will be soft and wavy :)

Definitely the day after washing. Washday it takes about 5-6 hours to dry if I just leave it, and once dry is all big and poofy. Next day, DD1, it's shinier and better behaved and the waves are nicer. Too clean to stay very well in an updo, though.

DD2 and 3 it still looks OK to wear down, updos become progressively easier then by DD6/7 it's definitely demanding to be washed. If I leave it longer than that my scalp will start to hurt.

The day after a wash. After my hair has dried, it's very big and frizzy. After I've slept on it all night, it's smooth.

3+ days with some caveats. At day 4, it's super-shiny, and the color seems nicer somehow. But it is kind of annoying to deal with at that point, and doesn't style well. And looks rather greasy.

My hair always looks miles better just after my hair has been washed. It goes all curly like it's supposed to be. Unfortunately, the day after it tangles badly on itself. I end up having to brush it and it goes MASSIVE. :(

June 24th, 2009, 04:35 PM
I think it looks best on day 3.
Immediately after washing and the day after that it looks nice but it doesn't behave very well.(frizzy)
Day 3 is really the best day for me, both for updos and wearing it down :)

Natalia
June 24th, 2009, 04:51 PM
I like second day the best. I CO with pretty moisturizing conditioners and i oil my ends to help with tangles so by day 3 its a bit of a pain to get to be smooth in updo's and cant really be worn down. Day two the oil has soaked in and my hair is finally totally dry (i wash at night). Its nice and slippery smooth and can be easily detangles in a few seconds.

On washday or the second one, depending on when it's completely dry.

Tangles
June 24th, 2009, 05:56 PM
It varies a lot--sometimes day 1, sometimes day 3. A lot depends on how much condish and oil I use. While these things are good for my hair in the long run, they can make my second day hair look stringy.

The day after a wash. :)

June 24th, 2009, 08:09 PM
I voted looks good on wash day. That's the only day I think it looks good. Day 2 is OK some of the time and not so good some of the time. Day 3 is crappy hair. If I get to Day 4 it's put a bag over her head hair.

Charlotte
June 24th, 2009, 08:20 PM
Would have to be day two when the fluffy look has settled down. Day 3 is sometimes ok and it's downhill from there...

I put the day after. It's really two days after, but you put that in the original post and then left it out of the actual poll!

June 24th, 2009, 08:34 PM
My hair looks SOO much better by the 2nd day, and I generally wash it again on the third, thanks to a super greasy scalp. Right after washing, all my ends seem to floof out and make me look like I have tons of flyaways.
Even a few hours after my hair dries looks better than how my hair looks freshly dried, so I'm not really sure. I vote gravity's pulling down my flyaways because my hairs are so coarse.

My hair is the best on wash day, because it's curly.

Every day is wash day for me, so I voted for wash day ;)

Quixii
June 24th, 2009, 09:52 PM
I'd say on washday. When it's almost completely dry with just a hint of dampness, it's in pretty, non-frizzy curls. The next day I've already slept on it and if I haven't brushed it it's still in curls, but with some tangles and frizz. If I have brushed it, it's frizzy waves.

Definitely washday for me. The next day it looks fine in the morning, but a few hours later it starts to get very greasy and flat. I usually wear a headband or scarf or something. (I wash every other day)

Since I wash in the evenings and dry overnight I will say the day after wash day, but it's still within 24 hours of washing!

Ive voted for the 2nd day. So much less frizz, especially if I damp bun and then let it down on the 2nd day.

June 25th, 2009, 05:30 AM
I think my hair looks best on wash day, fluffy and wurly.

The second day, it's gone flater but I usually apply a light oiling and so it's still fluffy. The oil smooths it out a bit. This is a great day for an updo.

The third day I usually go with another updo.

Then another wash day.

lailmil

second day, or the night of the wash day if I wash it in the morning :)

Dars
June 25th, 2009, 06:59 AM
The best is definitely wash day. After manipulating or sleeping on curls it just isn't the same. I can wear it loose on a second day if I wish but I have to tame it with oil and/or mousse.

mira-chan
June 25th, 2009, 07:23 AM
My hair usually looks fine all week wash to wash. It's the scalp that forces me to wash. It's not oily but gets crud buildup in about 1-2 weeks post wash.

June 25th, 2009, 10:34 AM
my hair looks best 24-48 hours after wash. I discovered that if I slow down the drying time it looks even better. I don't know what that is about any ideas?

zen_oven
June 25th, 2009, 10:36 AM
I put the day after. It's really two days after, but you put that in the original post and then left it out of the actual poll!

It definitely looks better the day after unless my hair looks good the day I wash it. If that happens the second day looks horrible.

If I do a CO wash then the day of washing but if I do a CWC wash then the day after! I however cannot sleep on my hair without getting the worst curly bedhead!:cheese:

My hair always looks best the day after washing. The day of it seems to be super frizzy, the next day it is perfect and then the days following it starts to get progressively more greasy.

I bun my hair after washing, that's why it's wet the rest of the day and half of the next day. After opening and combing it with my TT, my hair is usually smooth and soft. I love it that way :D

The day after washing :) The frizz mostly goes away and it just feels and looks nicer!

Rohele
June 26th, 2009, 05:22 PM
Mine looks best on wash day - the waves are nice and I can wear it down if I want to. By the second day it's starting to look greasy at the roots, and the waves are either looking squashed if I've left it alone or poufy if I've combed them, and I have to wear it up. I rarely go beyond this point without washing, but if I do, you can definitely tell it's dirty, even if it's up. Frizz is fairly constant in my life, I always seem to have a halo of new hairs that just won't lie flat, even the day after washing.

Lohari
June 26th, 2009, 05:45 PM
About 12 hours after wash : D And that is usually the day after washing my hair. Bangs straightened, little spray of conefree leave-in to whole hair, comb, smooth with hand= the best my hair ever looks. That may change though because I'm trying a different washing routine.

windinherhair
June 26th, 2009, 06:11 PM
I think my hair looks best on wash day and the day after. Then I start putting it up. My hair is naturally straight so I like how it lays after I let it air dry. It is just right those first 2 days.

JamieLeigh
June 26th, 2009, 08:11 PM
I also picked the day after a wash...It takes my hair most of the actual wash day to dry, so it's not really looking its best until the next day.

Bill D.
June 28th, 2009, 01:26 PM
I usually wash it right before going to bed as part of my evening shower, but if I wash it earlier and let it air-dry then it looks its best that same day. Elizabeth loves the curls I get this way!

On wash day, or the the day after if I washed it at night... that's why I wash it everyday, at least with conditioner only, so I refresh the waves and (attempts of) curls.

Please, correct me if I say something that doesn't make any sense.

June 29th, 2009, 06:26 AM
Usually the day after wash day. But my favorite hair times are right after I have henna/indigo'd my hair and let it dry loose. Shiny, soft and tangle free. Just wish I had time to do it more often!

Because I have very slight waving, it looks best on washing day. After that, braids and updos destroy the natural waves.

To put up in an updo, it is and looks best day after and until next wash.

Naamah
July 26th, 2009, 12:48 AM
I usually wash my hair when I wake up in the morning, and my hair looks best later that night after it's dried and settled down a bit.

Laylah
July 26th, 2009, 01:56 AM
I voted 3+ days.
My hair looks awfully awful on wash day. It's one huge tangle during the drying process, with a halo of frizz and a damp part in the back that take until the next day to dry.

The second day is ok, but I prefer to pull my hair into a half up to cover some of the frizz.

The third day is the turn-around point, when my hair starts to improve. It's silky and shiny enough to wear loose. The fourth and fifth day are the same, but by the sixth day my scalp gets oily and on the seventh I wash.

Aditi
July 26th, 2009, 02:22 AM
I voted for the day after i wash as my hair gets frizzy after my wash and the next day they smooth out and set well.

EtherealOde
July 26th, 2009, 08:36 PM
I like my hair on wash day, but it's on the poofy side and my curls don't look as nice as they do on day two. My hair shines more and seems smoother without the halo effect. The third day doesn't look as good as the second, it just seems limper and less bouncy. So I generally wash on day three if I'm going someplace, if there isn't a need to wash to look good then I don't. I figure why mess with it if I don't have to.

July 26th, 2009, 08:50 PM
I used to have hairstyles worked out for this very reason, haha.

Day 1 (wash day): use conditioners, oils, try to tame frizziness. Bun hair to make pretty waves
Day 2: pretty hair. Wear down.
Day 3: beginning to get mildly greasy at roots- half up 'do.
Day 4: a bit less than fresh looking- use powder to soak up some oil and put hair in braids, either twin french braids or one going along my hairline to pull hair off my face and then braid the length.
Day 5: rock a bandana or baseball cap.
And then back to day one.

I love second day wash, too! :inlove:

I think fashion people (my all encompassing term for hairdressers, makeup artists, designers, stylists, fashion mag writers/editors/etc) like second day hair too, I'm pretty sure it's what they mean when they say a particular hairstyle works best on "dirty" hair.

The day after a wash. Just after a wash and drying up it's frizzy. But after a night- smooth, shiiny, soft and cooperative! The second day is not that bad too. Third- sometimes, yes. But I just have to wash my fringe and... voila! :)

Crackaleen
August 15th, 2010, 04:17 PM
Mine looks best on the second or third day after washing. The day after washing, it's very frizzy and poofy. Day two or three, it's a lot more cooperative, shiny and sleek. After that, my length continues to look nice (maybe even continuing to improve), but the oiliness at my scalp starts to become more and more apparent.

August 17th, 2010, 10:26 AM
Seems like a lot of us leave it a day after it dries naturally from being washed. I usually let my hair dry in a big towel turban so it's not so frizzy (the slower it dries, the less boofy it seems to be) & then plait it overnight so it's best the day after or 2 days after :)

I wish there were a quicker way, like hairdrying but without the heat damage..

I dont know really, probably depends on how i want to wear it, but definitely not on the day i wash it. When i wash it it is huge, too big to where loose so i put it in a ponytail but that looks like i have a ball of hair as big as my head on my neck.

I wash my hair daily but oil it daily as well. Since I typically CO wash the oil out it accumulates more oil throuout the week until I shampoo at the end. It generally looks best about the middle of the week (not too oily but oiled enough to be shiny and nice looking).

My hair looks best about 8 hours after I wash it. I have no idea why. Before that it's full of flyaways but after about 8 hours it's nice looking. By 24-48 hours it isn't looking so hot and it needs to be either put up and forgotten or washed in order to look halfway descent.

I voted 3 days, but really anything past 3 looks great. The oils are evenly distributed and the fly-aways calm down. It's soft and looks great! On the other hand, about day 6 for me starts looking too oily and grimy and it starts FEELING icky.

For some reason I always have good hair days when I put the least amount of effort into doing my hair. That being said, my hair looks best when I let my naturally wavy hair air dry and wear it down.

Mangachan
October 12th, 2010, 09:09 PM
Generally, day 3. After I wash my hair I put it in braids so it can dry so it doesn't dry until day 2. On day 2, it will have the natural curl pattern but it will have a chunky afro look (sort of like my avatar picture) which is okay. After day 3, I've usually messed with it enough for it to settle into a shape I like. After that, I bun it for no other reason than because I feel like I have to. It's not like my hair ever gets oily unless I put something on it. I just wait around for product buildup and for my scalp to get dirty which would be on day 5 or 6.

Second, third, and fourth days, generally. First day my hair is yet wet and by the fifth it begins showing a bit of greasy. :( The sixth is generally slicked back and then the seventh is usually wash day!

Unless I do something weird, of course.

The day after a wash, for me.
Though it's actually fine two and even three days after.

It's better gotten better since I went No Poo a couple of years ago. Before that I had to actively smooth/bun/braid after washing or it was very frizzy for several days. Now it's fine as soon as it dries, but it's still better the day after.

but i voted on wash day :)

I alternate CO and WO washes, and it looks best the first day after a WO wash, I think because it's smack in the middle between washing with product and it has any accumulated fuzz/flakes/whatever washed out of it.

Straight after washing = great. Day after = still fine. After 2 days = getting a bit icky and oily, plus bun waves make my kink so it looks terrible down. After 3 days = disgusting, time to wash!

This! I'm nearly the same :)

Straight after washing= Great, silky heavy-looking hair, the ends look thicker. No grease!
Day 1= Still fine, but the ends may begin to look stringy if I let it down for half a day.
Day 2= Roots begin to get greasy...
Day 3= Greasy roots, time to wash or turn to dry shampoo if I have to wait another day without washing.

I believe that my hair looks its best on wash day because it has the most volume then. A friend of mine prefers my hair the day after I wash it because it has less volume and looks like it has been flat ironed. I personally prefer a lot of volume with my hair.

The day after washing (I wash every three days).

On wash day my hair is a combination of wet and fluffy. Being wet makes updos hold really well, but a lot of fluff seems to escape as it dries off.

The day after a wash, it's nice and sleek and still light in colour, but it doesn't hold well in updos. It's still fluffy but not as bad as day one.

By day three it is pretty greasy, so it looks darker than usual and is more willing to hold in a nice updo. I usually go for the deliberate, slicked back look. My hair seems to bother me the least on day three, even though it's looking its worst.

My hair looks best on wash day but that is only because when I DO dry my hair, it is on wash days, and my hair looks best when blow-dried.

Otherwise my hair looks best any day I slightly oil it then sleep in a braid and sport the braid waves the next day.

I kind of wonder if this question could be asked, within a 24 hour time frame.

What I found was in the morning after waking up my hair settles terribly in any style I leave it. By evening time, it softens up and looks nicer. Its like my hair was groggy from waking up, and feeling refreshed by evening - still knowing that hair isn't alive and all, but that's all I can attribute it to atm.

I can only tolerate my hair, and it looks [and smells] the best, if I wash it every day.. so wash day. I can't go any more than that, b/c my scalp is SOOO oily, and my hair looks, smells and feels gross if I don't wash it. I even tried washing it at night, and halfway through the next day it was like I hadn't washed it at all. :disco:

Well, mine can't look best on washday because it doesn't dry until at least 24 hours later (and it isn't even long, yet).
For me, its a tossup. I have the best curls at the point where it finally gets dry (2nd day). Beautiful spirals that feel very soft. After that, it starts losing curl and look first, wavy, and finally (if I wash once a week as usual) non-curly and non-wavy, but not straight. Just--visibly coarse and frizzy looking. (I have an afro-type curly hair, 3c is my best guess).
On the other hand, the longer it is since I have washed it, the longer my hair is. When its just washed it's shoulder length at best, by day 3 or 4 definitely below shoulder and by day 5 or 6, armpit length. It never straightens out completely, as it would be bra strap length if flat-ironed or blow dried(actually a little longer now), but even though it's not at its best in many ways, I enjoy it on the later days after a wash because you can see I have some length.

I think it depends. It's often most wavy (and a bit frizzy/staticky if I brush it out which I usually do) the day I wash it (after washing) and the next couple of days although after about day 3 I need to brush it out to get it to the same volume as on day 1 after washing and styling. However, sometimes it seems prettiest and with a few curls the day before I would wash it (usually ends up being day 7 after washing it). Yesterday (day 7 since I washed it the last wash day), it was looking really nice and wurly (had a few curls closer to the ends). So, I'm not real sure when it looks the best as my hair seems to have a mind of its own.

Tangle or Curl?
July 19th, 2013, 11:50 AM
My hair looks best on wash day. The day after it starts to look dingy and get tangly no matter how much or little product I use, or type of product. My curl pattern just seems to really enjoy water. It would be a poofball on wash day but I find that a pea sized amount of conditioner as "product" when dripping wet keeps it sleek, shiny, moisturized, and clumps the curls together really nicely.

About 3-4 days after a wash for me. That might be because I'm still using 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner and it makes my hair drier and a bit frizzy on the first two days. Not too bad though, which is why I'm still using it I guess (twice a week). I'll start experimenting with some different wash routines pretty soon. :)

I put day after wash, but that's only half true. The untouched, air-dried waves I get just after washing are my FAVORITES!! But they go away after sleeping on it, putting it up, or combing. Braid waves just aren't the same. That said, day after hair is so nice and clean, easy to handle, etc.

I'm going to include my long answer. I don't know if it's because I had MORE hair when i was a teen (still trying to discover if I have lost some density) or if it's because I brushed my hair always and lived in high humidity as opposed to now, but back then it was too huge on wash day to just wear down. Way too poofy. Now I love it on wash day because it curls , I don't brush, and it's when I get the closest to having the same volume (so I can try and reassure myself that I didn't lose hair) as back then. Since I sleep with a braid now, my curls become totally flat and lame and I have virtually no volume on 2day hair, especially since I never brush. I'm hoping it's all these changes in my hair care that have caused this change. BUt yes. . . wash day it is for me!

Best when down: Day after wash-day. For one, that's when it's finally dry :D. Plus it's got great wave definition and it's just shiny enough from the oil without being tacky.

Best with braids: Day 3-4. If I'm lazy, I can throw it into a kickass braid that holds like a rock. Fishtail braids on Day 3 are especially awesome.

This question is more difficult for me than it really should be. I guess it depends on what I've used on my hair if I'm being completely honest. Typically, when I wash my hair, it ends up drying pretty straight now, which I'm not a big fan of, so I always prefer how my hair looks the day after once I've loosened all of my braids and have massive braid waves. By the third day, it tends to start losing it's "oomph" and starts to straighten itself out again - waves aren't nearly as defined and loses at least half its volume. Fourth day, my scalp is starting to get pretty oily and by the fifth day, I can't stand to be around myself so I always end up washing. However, I've used certain shampoos and my hair is incredible all through the fifth day, so like I said before, it depends.

Mine always looks it's best after a wash when it's wet and when it eventually dries. It's curliest then (ultimate shrinkage), shiniest and the darkest. It feels great too. If I leave it too long between washes the hair feels and looks dry, off black or dull and the curls stretch out a bit so it starts to look frizzy wavy.

My hair always looks miles better just after my hair has been washed. It goes all curly like it's supposed to be. Unfortunately, the day after it tangles badly on itself. I end up having to brush it and it goes MASSIVE. :(

Have to agree here, on wash day (sans-blowdry) i get very curly. It looks great and the curl stays really well through the evening too, but by morning its usually full of tangles. If i blow dry it it straightens out into waves like my avatar and is much more manageable the next day.

My hair looks the best after wash day. Usually my hair gets a lil puffy when it dries after a shower, but it calms down the next day.

The day after is usually best, but I do love my curl explosions on humid days when I shampoo and put it in a banana clip :)

On wash day my hair goes really puffy but at least my curls look nice then. It generally behaves the best in the 3rd day.

I usually wash every 3 or 4 days. It really depends on what chores I've gotten myself into. My hair always looked best on wash day before I learned how to take better care of it. Now, thanks to LHC, I think its looks best for 2 days after washing. Pre oiling and CWC has made a huge difference.

Probably on the third day, but only after I started using oils. When I was using shampoo and conditioners it was too dry and frizzy until about 5+ days and lasted easily 10 days between washes.
I have to wash it more often now but its worth it to have a consistent texture.

Before, I voted on washday, but now it changed to the day after washday.

I think my hair LOOKS the best on day 6-8, but it FEELS the best the day after a wash.

My hair always looks the best when it has just been washed, no matter what length it is. It just behaves itself more when it has been shampooed and conditioned.

When I'm at home and will not be leaving the house and I won't be able to show off to my boyfriend except through strangely angled photos :((

I voted the day after wash day, especially when I braid it and go to sleep. Usually, I wash my hair in the morning or afternoon so it can air dry before bed, but lately, I've been finding that if I put it in two damp braids to dry through the night it is incredibly shiny and soft in the morning! Plus, braid waves are much less frizzy and tangly than my natural waves. However, my hair is starting to get so long that sleeping in braids is a pain. I or my boyfriend always end up rolling onto them at some point

Freshly washed, definitely. I'm working on a tiktok of how my hair looks throughout a whole week and days 4 to 7 are just depressing.

Mine looks best about a month after a keratin smoothing, it's not dead straight, but not wavy either
