View Full Version : Wearing your hair up: how many hours a day?

I generally wear my hair up in some way each day and for the most part, I don't notice it. What I mean by that, is I pretty much forget about my hair until all of a sudden I NEED to take it down. I've noticed it's usually after about 11 or 12 hours, so now I'm curious: what's your breaking point? How long do you usually keep your hair up till you just need a break?

I have a really bad habit of NOT keeping my hair up in one style for very long. So usually I can keep my style of the moment in for maybe 5 hours and then I have to change it to a different updo, braid, or let it down. It's a really awful habit but I don't like my hair in one place on my head for very long. So I'd say 5 hours tops for me.

I wear my hair up 10-12 hours a day. Usually at about hour 9 or 10 I really want to take it down. If I'm not careful, I'll pull the sticks out without thinking about it! O.O Suddenly my hair is down all around me and I don't know how it happened...

During school is at least 8 hours minus some minutes when I change my hairstyle. During the summer is close to never because I leave my hair down at home.

I mainly wear my hair up when at work and thats a 12 hour shift, so 12+hours a day easily on those days. At home when I wear it up it may even be for a longer time because generally it goes up in the morning (6am or so) and down at night (11pm). As long as its secure, I don't mind no matter how long it is but if I start off with it not quite right it bugs me all day.

Some days I wear my hair in a half-up mostly all day or even down all the way but at waist it is beginning to be hard to take. Also it's very HOT lately so I have been wearing it up from probably 7 in the morning until 8 or so at night or even longer if it is in a braid which is the most comfortable style for me. If I wear it UP on my head it tends to pull after a while and the maximum up-time is probably 8-9 hours or so but I usually have to redo it at a different place on my head because of headaches.

I admire all of you creative folks who can change hairstyles midday! I'm pleased with myself for doing it once! The best I can manage is tossing it into a low pony or a messy bun after my head has had a bit of a break.

If it's braided (a regular braid, or pigtail braids, or a braided bun...what? I like braids!) I can leave it up for 12+ hours. Sometimes when I'm really busy with school I've left it braided for two or three days straight, only taking it down to rebraid it when it gets too fuzzy.

I can usually only wear it up in a bun for 5-6 hours max before it gets irritatingly messy or gives me a headache, though.

I never thought about this. I put my hair up in the morning and take it down before bed. Brush it and comb it and put it in a top-of-the-head sleep bun. On weekends I have been known to come to lunch with my hair still in the sleep bun! ;)

It depends on what the style is for me. Sometimes a couple hours and I'm miserable. Sometimes I can make it almost 12 hours. I'm doing clinical rotations in the fall and I really need to find things I like to wear and I can handle for 12+ hours.

I put it up first thing in he morning and take it down to braid for the night just before bed.

That brings up a good point, I think certain styles are more comfortable than others. I'm going to start paying attention to which ones I'm able to endure for longer periods of time without needing to give my head a rest.

Braids are the only things I can wear all day. Any style that "pulls" anywhere really bothers me after 4 hours or less.

I wear my hair up for work, and I notice when I get home I forget to take it down. It is just up so I leave it be. My husband likes when I wear it down, so I try to remember. :) On my days off from work, I like to wear it down and only pull it back when it may be in the way of doing things.

An average of about 10-12 hours a day. Certain days of the week I redo my hair for the evening. Occasionally I can't decide, so if I'm home I might change my hairstyle every few hours or so. :)

I wear my hair up a LOT, probably 22-23 hours a day*. Yes, most nights I sleep with it up. I pretty much only wear it down when I am letting it dry, combing it out or putting it up again. I change the updo if it is falling out or will not suit an activity.

*significantly less if I wash my hair, then I sleep with it down

I like to let my hair down when I'm finally sitting down relaxing at the end of the day. Most days, that's after it's been up for 12/13 hours. Days when I work longer, it will saty up longer. Yesterday, it went up at 7 am and came down at 11.30 pm.
I notice my hair much more when it's down, once it's up I can forget it. If it's going to pull and annoy me, that will happen as soon as i've done it, so I redo at that point. I never redo it during the day unless I need to change style for a particular activity (i.e. it's been in a braid all day and I have a dance lesson that needs a bun)

If you consider a 3-strand braid as "up" then I'd say about 23.9 hours out of the day (since I sleep with my hair braided). Haha. If you don't, well then at the moment about 14-16 hours depending on the day. It's down either when I'm combing it out prior to restyling it or if I'm going to wash it on my select wash days.

It usually stays up until I take it down for bed or sports (and then it goes into a braid, so if braids count as up, it's almost always up). So that's between 8 and 14 hours a day I guess... There are of course the days that my hair refuses to cooperate, and then it doesn't stay up for more than a few hours before I have to redo my bun...

About 23 hours a day. . . if you count braids as well.

I've got a pretty sensitive head, so I wear mine up 5-6 hours a day at the most. If I have a migraine, it's down or in a braid all the time.

Oo, well if you count in my braids as an updo, about...24 hours? Jaja! I really do not want to look at it unless its my picture day. It's only down on wash day for 3 hours, then i immediately put it back up when it's dry. I only change my updo twice a day on average, once in the morning and once at night.

I wear it up for at least 6hours, then whenever I'm home or at a friends house and I take it down for comfort so I can sit back. I don't wear it down in public as it just looks silly.

when I'm at home, I oil my ends and plait and bun it but I'll pull it out about 3 maybe 4 times a day comb it, replait and bun before my final comb and plait before putting it up in my hairnet before sleep :-)

I put it up before work or school at 6:30 am, so that's 7 days a week, and I don't take it down until before bed usually around midnight or later. I take it down earlier if it's due for a wash. So something around 14-18 hrs a day before I switch to a top of the head bun for sleeping. It's down for washing and maybe five mins to a half an hour a day when changing styles.

I rearrange my hair twice. In the morning and then at night. If it is a wash day, then I will let it air dry for about an hour. All in all, my hair is up for about 20 hours, or more, a day.

Almost all the time. I feel very strange with my hair down, particularly in public. I wear a sleep braid at night, but during the day the only times it is down is when I am washing, airdrying, or redoing a style that has become loose (or making a new style, e.g. for exercise).

So, yes. Up all the time. When I have a migraine, however, I french braid. Some days I just wear a french/dutch braid, which counts as "up" to me since my hair is short. Once it gets longer, I think I will pin up the "tail" of the braid somehow so it still feels up.

I do the exact same as you, the only time its down is when its just washed and drying. I actually have a real problem wearing it down now, if i wear it down i'm itching to put it up .

Pretty much all day :/ even if I wanted to wear it down, I can't cause its too hot. Plus I'm trying to keep it up all summer so when I eventually let it down in September, I'll be pleasantly surprised by the added length :D

I agree, sometimes I can leave it in all day, but sometimes the hairstyle hurts after a few hours, and then I usually change sooner.
nautilus bun usually works for me for a longer period.

With most styles I have them in for about 16 hours - put them in when I get up, take them out when I go to bed. Sometimes I will have a style that is a bit less comfortable, or where I did it too tight, and then I might take it down when I get home from work instead, so only have it in for 11 hours. If I have to take it out before then it is usually because I did it wrong the first time!

I plait my hair at night too, but I do that by putting my head down and plaiting my hair upside down. I do it loosely enough that it only affects the length, not the roots. So I can wear that as long as I like, it doesn't pull (although it does look daft!)

My hair is up 23 hours and 45 minutes every day.

The only time it is down longer is when I wash it.

Once I had it up for more than 24 hours  I was at a figure skating competition the whole day, and when I got home I was sooo tired so I didn't take it out. If it would have been a "normal" bun, I would have done so. But that bun had braids and tons of hairspray and glitterspray on it :P

This happens to me too! Sometimes I don't even know where I've put my stick/fork (always off the ground on a safe surface)

But generally it's up and only taken down to be combed or preened.

Mines up most of the day too, its impractical to have it down for work, and doing stuff around the house. I generally have it up in a comfortable way though so I don't notice, if my hair starts to pull or my scalp ache then I can't help but let it down and put it up comfortably again. I couldnt wear it up as long as I do if it wasn't comfortable.
