View Full Version : Any Sweet Adelines out here? (hairstyle suggestions)

This is on topic, I swear!
So I've become a Sweet Adeline (http://www.sweetadelinesintl.org) and my chorus is coming up on what will be my first set of performances. Now, our aesthetic standards dictate that my hair be A) off my face, B) neat, C) can't have any pins/toys showing, and D) sort of, well, big. Now, here's my quandary. My hair is 44" long, thick, wurly, and heavy. I do not use anything as far as styling products (hairspray, curling irons, gel, what-have-you) so I'm really not certain how to get all of this hair into a big, neat style. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking doing rag curls and taking the rags out about half an hour before stage time, so the curls don't fall out. I'd pile a bunch of strands up top, pin them in place, and hope for the best, I think.

Wow that's wonderful that you are in such a well-respected group! Congrats!
Now on to hairy stuff:

You could try maybe a braided bun and use amish pins or a crap-load of bobby pins
You could try Nautilus Bun
You could try a double french braid and then when you get to the nape of the neck bun it.

I know all of these are buns but the only other thing I can suggest at you length would be some crazy braids all put up into a twist(French twist?)
Good luck on both your hair and performances!
Oh and Torrin Paige has some wonderful videos that might help out.

Would a high sock bun be big enough? With thick hair you'd probably be able to wrap a braid around the base for decoration.

Good luck with your performances! :flowers:

A low bun with amish hair pins? Those are practically invisible in my hair. Moreso if you painted them brown.

Or wavelength pins (bent double pointed knitting needles) painted?

I don't know... Having my hair down is never neat, it always ends up a mess by the end.

What about something like this? http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1226.jpghttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1228.jpghttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h278/torrinpaige/SANY1224.jpg

It's definitely big and won't mind your curls at all. It's also kind of vintage-y, which I think fits in with the Sweet Adeline aesthetic. I'm doing a tutorial on it later today. I had to give it a test run last night to make sure it was a secure enough 'do. It held up to five hours of drumming so I think it'll do you well for a performance. :)

No hairstyle suggestions, but this thread caught my eye. My great-grandma was a Sweet Adeline and gave me a necklace last Christmas that she was given by her group. Good luck on the performance!

Yeeeeeah Barbershop! My dad is a member of the men's organization (previously SPEBSQSA), so I am kind of a fan!
As far as the hair goes, I pretty much would suggest what everyone else is saying - pins etc. Do you have any hair scroos? Those are nice too.
