View Full Version : The difference between virgin and dyed hair

A couple months ago I had my hair cut from almost BSL to a shortish bob that came to just below my ears. I was sick of dealing with the damaged length of my hair. It just took too much care. So I cut all the dyed hair off, and WOW, I never thought there would be this much of a difference!!! My dyed hair required multiple combings per day, would break and tangle when I ran my fingers through it, felt like straw, was a b**** to wash, and always looked like crap. Now my hair lays flat, is shiny, and silky, and soft, and never tangles, and I can go days without combing it and it will just fall apart softly in my fingers when I finger comb it. I'm completely amazed, and as much as I loved how long my hair was getting, I love the feeling of this hair so much more that it makes the cut worth it!
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have not had that experience, but I still have about 10 inches of dyed ends and I've been dying my hair since I was 15 so I don't remember what it felt like before.
You just gave me hope that my tangled ends *might* get better once I trim off the rest of the dye. :flower:

I completely understand. My hair was relaxed, with a brown permanent dye to lighten it and then I had a semi-permanent red rinse over that. Gorgeous color, but my hair was crying "Uncle!" It felt very dry, and was extremely porous.
I remember when my virgin roots started growing in, I couldn't get over how awesome they felt compared to the rest of my hair! :D It was soon after that I decided to go natural anyway.

It's definitely different. Mine was a lot curlier dyed. I'm not sure why. I pretty much went from 2c to 1c once I grew out the damaged bits. Sooooo much easier to detangle though.

When my hair is semi-dry I can literally see where my damage ends and my new, healthy hair begins. Multiple dyes, daily blow drying and straightening have taken a toll on my hair. The damaged parts are very curly, (more so when wet) frizzy and stringy. :( I can't wait for my new growth to reach BSL!

It took a while to build up the courage to cut off the dyed stuff, but when I did, it was awesome. I don't know why, as I know it can't possibly be true, but it felt like it affected every inch of my hair, making everything from the crown down feel oodles softer.

When I used a mild bleach on my hair once(Didn't last longer than a week!) it severely damaged my hair. The virgin growth is so easy to take care of compared to the dyed/blow dryed sections!

I've been in your shoes. I remember when I cut off that last piece, years ago. Congratulations. Honestly, undamaged hair requires almost no care at all. It's so easy and exactly what makes having hair nice. I hate the high maintenance thing too. Growing it out should be more fun now. Enjoy.

I can't wait to cut off the damaged parts of my hair. Last year I cut off 6 inches of hair that had undergone multiple bleachings. I dyed my hair a few times after that and I'm sure there's STILL bleach damage left on my ends... I just trim 1/4 an inch every so often. *sigh* I probably only have 4 inches of healthy, henna'd hair.

You given me a lot of hope, actually. I remember virgin hair; it was nice. Sigh, one day...

yes, i noticed my virgin hair to be alot smoother and shinier then my highlighted hair, but my natural hair would get oily kinda fast with co washing or WO but with chemical treated hair i can stretch out longer and my hair still looks as good as day 1
