Okay, so I am getting my hair styled soon, I am getting it a lot like this http://www.emohaircutstyles.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/short-black-emo-hair-330x406.jpg. I love that style. It's definately long enough at the back and sides to be cut like that (it will be quite a bit shorter at the back and sides after its cut), and it is almost that long in the front...

But, I am going to dye it too (myself). I am dying most of it black, but I am going to dye the underneath layer of my bangs dark red (like in the picture). Right now my hair is its natural colour, dark brown with a lil bit of red, (this is me)
http://s645.photobucket.com/albums/u...7th2008093.jpg (http://s645.photobucket.com/albums/u...7th2008093.jpg)

My question is, if I want the underneath layers of my bangs to be dark red, something like this, http://farm1.static.flickr.com/153/353354167_df44add47b.jpg, should I just put a box of dark red hair dye on my hair, will it go that colour, or should I bleach my bangs and then dye them that colour of red... Thanks :)

It depends how dark your hair is naturally I think. If its pretty light then dark red should go over it ok. In the picture the red looks quite bright, I don't think you'd be able to get that colour from a naturally dark colour.

Bleach kills though XD

How about looking at Pravana Vivids? I just posted a thread about them last night (with pics).

You need to know that red hairdyes are the fastest to fade, and the vivid color your are showing is unlikely from any box dye :)

Manic Panic might give you red highlights in the sun without bleach, and even with bleach will be gentler than double processing as it is a deposit only color.

I've seen that red (and a comparable vivid purple, which one of my friends was wearing as an "underlayer" recently) from dyes the salon I used to go to used. It was a weird system... apparently you "renewed" the dye at home weekly with a "dye bar" or something, and the colour from that only stuck to the already dyed hair. Apparently it worked...

For the sort of precise and rather impressive dealie you're going for, Druid of Alba, I think you might want to get the salon to do the first one, then touch up yourself.

Hmmm... how about instead of black, I do super dark brown, and then have my bangs dark auburn, that would look more natural and I think if I put a box of auburn on my hair it would go auburn-ish...
