Hello everyone! :waving:

My hair is at APL now. I'm finding it difficult to think of updos and styles for my hair length. And also what hair toys I could use? :)

I think I once saw a thread on here on a guide to styles and updos that would go well with a certain hair lengths. But I can not find it? Does something like that exist here?

Any advice on APL length hair, updos, styles and hair toys would be most welcome :D

Thank you! :flowers:

Anything that starts with a topsy tail kind of pull-through is cute and kept well for me. Try a gibson tuck, or making a pull through and braiding it out for a little different look to a braid.

I used to make a high pony tail at my crown and braid that into about four braids and twist them around the pony tail base for a braided bun that looked complicated. It stayed for me without pins.

If I were back at apl, I would go to the library and hunt up some braiding books. There are lots of fancy looking braid styles that work at the length.

One that is called, I think, the Gainsborough (like the painter, not the Final Fantasy character) in one of the braiding books. 1. part your hair down the center and clip off one side. Make a horizontal part at the back of your head, close to the crown, on the free side. 3. Braid out the top and bottom halves and clip out of the way. 4. Repeat on the other side.
5. This is where you may have to fiddle with it a bit. Take the bottom two braids and cross them at the nape so they lie kinda flat, pin them in place. Pin the top two braids down the back so they look like they meet the bottom two and form a more or less continuous braid. Tuck those ends under and pin.

I'm sure that is clear as mud. You should end up with something that looks somewhat like a horseshoe around the back of your head.

You might try this regency style braid. http://olde-fashioned.livejournal.com/21179.html?thread=1027771

Also, a french twist and you may be able to do something with a sock bun that would look nice and like a whole lotta hair.

Hope that helps.

I'm at APL and can use hairsticks. I've found that just playing around with my hair gives me buns that I can wear. The only problem I have is that I have to use a ponytail base or else the style falls down. Mini jaw clips and bobby pins are my friends too.

I like the styles mentioned so far- gibson tuck, that new cheater's bun.

I also like a tucked-under french braid, and the style I do most involves putting my hair in a half-up bun, then winding the bottom part of my hair around it and pinning. My album here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=2444) has some pictures.

I also like a french twist with a flexi-8, it's the only way I can ever make a twist hold comfortably all day.

I do a lot of twists with my hairsticks. I find those hold the best. I can also do cinammon buns and have them held by my sticks or forks. I just managed a sort-of box braid that I like to sleep in, but I don't usually wear braids out of the house. They can be done, though :)

I did that one, too. I remember that it looked like a whole lot more hair than I actually have. Always a good thing, in my opinion anyway. :p

The Hairzing is a great hairtoy...and it's one that will grow with your hair. They come in three sizes and are fairly cheap if you shop around. ($15 USD or so) Here's a link...there's styles and everything there! http://www.hairzing.com/

This Thread might be interesting to you: Updos for fine, shoulderlength hair (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=16198) - yes, I also was looking for more versatility with my hairstyles, starting from shoulder-length! :D

The ones I found and love are also in the article section:
Chignon - updo for shorter hair (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=132)
The Angel Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=131)

There also do exist discussion threads somewhere in the Mane Forum....

You should also be able to do a Lazy Wrap Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=72), although it might not hold with a hairstick. I can do it with a Ficcare or a 4-pronged Fork. But then again my hair is super-slippery.

You can try the manderly knot in my signature. It's a short-lived hairstyle, and it looked best on my in the time from APL-BSL :)

This thread has a bunch of good ideas, and I want to especially thank AngelInDisguise for coming up with several really nice updos for those of us with shorter hair. I just tried the Cheater's Easy Wrap Bun, and it looks great (if a little messy because of my layers).

Maybe it's because of my layers or because I'm in the middle of the ii range for thickness, but I just can't do the vast majority of the buns and knots that others seem to be able to do with approximately the same length of hair as mine. I'm a little envious of the pictures of AngelInDisguise's Rose Bun, Chinese Bun, etc. And, I definitely can't do the Lazy Wrap Bun or Manderly knot, as has been suggested. I honestly think I'll need 3 or 4 more inches, almost BSL for me, for these to work.

Thanks, concrescence! :flower:

This is one (and the only one I can think of) advantage of fine and thin hair: One can do most hairstyles a lot earlier. I am on the i/ii range so it's no wonder you need more length than I do!

I know how it feels :D. I'm a F ii aswell (but a 1a/1b), and have very layered hair. (The shortest are at chin lenght). Oh, and we have almost the same lenght aswell.

Every updo I do gets messy, and it took me a while to accept that I might not be able to do those nice updos until my hair is much longer. But I'm getting pretty good at using bobby pins and mini jaw clips, to make the layers behave.:)

We'll just have to wait a bit longer...
