It didn't look that bad but it was. The line at the top was where the worst tangles were. My ends would wrap around each other. I had a good size rat's nest underneath that I couldn't get a comb through. I had my husband cut the rest to be the same length as my shortest layer. It's below shoulder but really curled up after cutting. I look forward to be APL by Christmas.

Oh! Well, I did a huge chop in late December. I had just gone through an emotional deal with a close friend and I wanted a change in my life. No two week rule thingy *facepalm*. I just drove to the salon and said, "Cut it all off."
Luckily the stylist didn't speak English, he only spoke French, and seeing as my French is good, but not fluent, I didn't know how to exactly say, "cut it all off" in French. But, I could communicate that I wanted a big chop, and that was what I got.
I went from an overgrown (almost MBL) BSL to my longest layer hitting my clavicles. He also cut in layers to no belief. And, the worst part, I had JUST finished growing out my bangs, and he cut those uber short. Now, to be fair, it looked really cute. It was very fun, flirty, and stylish, and it was what I wanted. But, the style needed heat styling in order to lay/look right. I blowfried/straightened every day from December to the end of March. Then I stumbled here, saw Nightshade's article on damaged hair, and surrendered. I'm at BSL now, and with my fast growth rate, I should be at waist by the end of the year, which is my first mini-goal.
@ Speckla: Your curls are absolutely beautiful! It's going to be amazing longer!

The most I've cut off at one time was about a foot of hair, and it's been short ever since. Impulsive = bad!
I'd post pictures, but I know neither the before nor after picture would be up to LHC standards. /:

xoLegallyAubrey Thank you. I have always wore my hair very long. I love long hair. At the time I got bored with it, wanted a change, and I had long layers put in it. Then I didn't like it with the layers.
So I had it cut off to get the layers out. I still have some layers in it, their almost out. Then I can start letting it grow back out. But now I have all of this wonder info on here to have better hair than it was before.

I cut off to shoulder once I had grown out my dye.
This was a few months before the cut
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e117/lchamber78/DSCF1140.jpg
And there it is after... There's some dye left at the ends but not much, some layering to get rid of the bulk of it. My virgin hair has a lot less wave than my dyed hair. Kinda odd. I'm just getting back to where I was pre-chop :)

I cut from waist to chin in my biggest cut, then to about 2 inches all over except for the front and then shaved my head a couple of months after that. No pictures, that was before coming here and I would never have thought to take a picture of the back of my head then. :)

My last hair cut (not sure if it was a 'big chop') was to remove the last of bleach damage from a few years prior. I had this done in October 2008.
I went from BSL to APL. I am now back to a strong BSL. :)
I suppose you'd like to see ;) -

I don't have any "big chop" pics, as the last one was a failed self-trim that took off probably
8" a 1/4" at a time. Couldn't get it even - talk about disaster! :o( Haven't touched my hair with anything sharp since and this was right after I'd joined LHC - been a while!
Funny how many have cut their hair and then regretted it so quickly. There's no coming back from there anytime soon, though. That two-week rule has probably saved a lot of heartache for a lot of people!

My hair was just above my bra strap (three years worth of growing, originally a chin-length bob) when I decided to chop. I cut it into an extremely short boyish crop, with the shortest parts being under 1 inch (I cut it myself after some very irresponsible  and wasnt being very careful, so it was very uneven).
It was during a time of horrible depression when I decided to cut all my hair off; I realise how stupid I was now, it didn't make me any happier in the end. Happy to be back to growing :)
Speckla your hair looks beautiful after the chop by the way :D

I was completely happy with it, and kept it short for a few years. But now I've decided that I miss being able to play with my hair. I had already decided to grow it out again, but then I found this place it strengthened my resolve! I want to get it back to where it was in high school, then go longer, since now I know how to take care of it properly. :)

You know, in my ideal world my hair would grow so fast that I could easily go from chin to waist in 6 months or so. Because I really do like short hair, and I really like long hair, but the three years in between is just... too long to wait. :p

Well I just did a big chop yesterday.:( I think it was for the best though, I am back to 33 inches.:( But what I'm going to do this time is do more frequent micro-trims so that my hair does not look like a string as it's growing out. I got to my first goal which was 36 inches but I just was not happy with the way it looked. So the main picture on my profile is about the length that I am back to now.
My husband cut it for me and did a great job but it was hard for him, he evened it up after chopping the 3 1/2 inches off but left a couple of stray hairs because he could not bear cutting off anymore.:p
I am trying to grow out all of my henna so I guess this is a positive step in that direction too.

I've only ever had two big chops in my life. I went from classic length hair to shoulder length when I was about 10 or so, and then to above my ears a few years later. After that I grew it back out to classic length and have no plans to change. It wasn't an impulse thing, just curiosity. I looked horrible with short hair but I'm glad I did it, because I'll never wonder about it again.
I'm thinking now it would be best if I cut off about 3-4 inches just to get rid of all my nasty ends, but I can't bring myself to do it! I feel like such a wuss, because I know nobody would notice the difference and it certainly wouldn't feel any different to me! :undecided

It was not all in one big chop though. First I had about 4 or so inches cut, then I had this really weird bob-sort of 'do with longer bits at the front, and then finally the black pixie cut. Haven't cut it since :) (Whoever said short hair makes you look older and more mature didn't know my case...)
I also cut my about APL hair to a short-is bob when I was about 9, my parents actually gave me a 100 marks for doing that. My mum has never liked long hair on me

I don't regret it at all. I'm glad I experienced it that short, and now I'm looking forward to hitting waist length so I can say I've experienced that too! I think it'll end up a bit above BSL when I'm done playing around, LOL!

Well, I guess I've had a few "big chops" in my life. There's only one I've ever regretted though. It was when my mom cut my hair into a bob... I had fake hair at the time though, yet for some reason I was just "traumatized" by the length, even though the hair wasn't mine to begin with.
Before the "traumatic chop".

Then after I took it down to my relaxed hair, I felt good again.

http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/60/ l_de7afdb3a3a7e5f38664bd1a22e574ef.jpg
But then I decided to stop flat-ironing and chemically straightening my hair, so I buzzed my hair off and started from scratch.
http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/27/ l_6d5007e0d0844e3c8d162b9f955aaa8c.jpg
It's grown a lot since then.
http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/74/ l_09b47039d5204ec7bcfc96fb5a6229ef.jpg
It's actually grown even more since this picture was taken. I love my hair now. It makes me feel so... unique, I guess. I admit I do get a little jealous looking at all of you guys with long silky hair, and I know I'll never have that unless I damage it again (which I won't), but still, at the same time I think about how many more people can never have the hair that I have... you know? Especially when it gets really long.
Anyway, sorry. I'll stop rambling now.

I admit I go get a little jealous looking at all of you guys with long silky hair, and I know I'll never have that unless I damage it again (which I won't), but still, at the same time I think about how many more people can never have the hair that I have... you know? especially when it gets really long.
Your hair is GORGEOUS, and you are so right that it is very unusual to see long natural hair in the 4 range. Anybody can go get a weave, but your hair is so pretty, and it's all yours! Welcome to LHC!

After.
I look simply thrilled don't I. Haha
Then after I took it down to my relaxed hair, I felt good again.
But then I decided to stop flat-ironing and chemically straightening my hair, so I buzzed my hair off and started from scratch.
It's grown a lot since then.

Anyway, sorry. I'll stop rambling now.
=o in that last photo, you look like a princess! (seriously, it was the first thing I thought :) )

Ditto - NickalNack, your hair is really stunning, I think!
Btw, I love looking through this thread - I love how long hair looks on people, but so many of us also look fabulous with short! Not trying to encourage people to chop it again, just commenting that we have lots of good looking people here at LHC haha.

To this:

Then I grew it back to almost where it was in the first pic and cut it like this:

I loved it, but only 2 months later I thought it would look even better shorter. I'm not going to post a pic because I didn't care for it, so I just let it grow. After two more cuts (one to blend the layers/bangs and one to make it all one length), I'm back to about 20" and growing! Current pics are in my blog. :)

Exactly right! I really wish I could get super-tight kinks or curls without royally damaging my hair. :o
BTW, that WHOLE POST had me making a one-person thud pile! One after another, holy cow! :thudpile:

I went from near-tailbone length to shoulder length when I was in 6th grade or so. I cut it to pixie when I was 13 and liked it okay. However, the constant torment from my classmates (especially boys) made me so self-conscious about it that I've been growing it out ever since. I guess it was worth the experience, because now I'll never doubt my long hair fantasies. :)

NickalNack you do look like a princess, that was my first thought too. Don't give in to relaxers, your hair is awesome and looks so soft and genuine. Keep taking pics of your progress, it will be a beautiful journey. :)

Not a very big chop but...
I went from this:

to this:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y86/Zizywa/Anneli_2okt2007a.jpg
Reason I cut it was because I had shorter hair on the sides and wanted it all even.
The cut was almost two years ago and I think my hair is now longer than it was on the first pic. (I will take a new one soon).
I didn't regret the cut at all, since I was sooooo tired of having it different lengths. :)

No pix from me because I'm too lazy to find and scan them in, but I just want to thank people for posting pix. It's helping me gain the courage to get rid of the ugly ends that just need to be chopped because I can see how some people massively improved their hair's appearance just by getting rid of the ends that weren't as healthy.
I'm now on the hunt for the perfect fringe/bangs. =)

Since I cannot for the life of me get image posting to work, I've linked to my album.
That is the BOTTOM half of my formerly classic length braid. The weird thing is when I measured the circumference, it was only about two inches. Maybe it was just fluffy?
:brickwall: it was so thick and healthy. I have less than a fraction of it left.
WHY??!!! *idiot* Those are photos of one of my biggest regrets, I thought it would grow back... it didn't. I wish I could glue it back or regrow it :wail:

I bit of a hijack, but just needed to say this. In this thread I see pictures of the faces of people for the first time - before I had seen them only from the back. And I am thinking, "My, its not just the great hair! We have so many really, really beautiful ladies here!" Maybe its the element of surprise, but I really like all the front pictures I see :).

I've noticed that too! Well, I guess everybody here could be a long hair model. Figures that we could be from-the-front (lol) models, too! Or maybe we take so many pictures of our heads, that we all have mad photography skills... :D

Absolutely beautiful!
I did a poll on my blog back in June of '06 on whether or not I should cut. I had a lot of damage from old colour & a perm. I'll not mess with trying to move pictures around & just link to the post with before & after (http://ladygunn.blogspot.com/2006/07/hair-hair-nowhere.html). It's so much healthier now, without all the chemicals and probably a good 6 inches longer than it was in the before shot. I do hate having shorter hair, but I usually wouldn't remember that until after the chop, although this one was desperately needed. In 6th grade, Mom cut my hair into a longish pixie, but I didn't want the cut. I had a curl right in the middle of my forehead and abhor that school picture to this day. :scared:

I chopped 8 inches off right before I found LHC. My inability to make a good updo was what got to me, and for some reason shorter seemed like it would work better. NOT. My lovely tapered ends were all gone and I could do nothing but a single braid until things grew back out. Any bun had these ends poking out like the bristles of a paint brush. Dummy me. What was I thinking?

I don't have any pictures, but when I was 14, I cut all my hair completely off. I remember being able to cover my breasts with my hair and do that cool mermaid thing, so it must have been close to waist length. A couple of weeks later, I mentioned to my dad that I wanted a haircut because I didn't know what the heck I was supposed to do with my hair and it always looked crazy. He got indignant and fussed about how women should never have short hair, it wasn't feminine, blah blah blah.
3 days later I was sporting the Halle Berry pixie. It was very cute, and my hair took almost no time to style, but I don't see myself going back. The growing out was TERRIBLE, and unfortunately coincided with the Monica Lewinsky story.
I also used to love to wear black berets, but the resemblance was too much.

I hope this isn't against all board orthodoxy, but that short cut does look really nice on you!

Chromis: your post made me giggle and snort in a most unladylike way!
My last big chop was... 2001? I had waist-length hair and I shaved my head. I cried for two days, even though it was my idea :( Still, after that I got used to it, and I even kind of liked the 1.5" burr cut that I had for a while. Cute, but too many people mistook me for a boy ;) I have no regrets about it, but now that I've grown it back to waist-length... I don't have even the slightest urge to ever cut it all off again.
(now I am going to spend the next week looking for photographic evidence to post)
