Anyone tried any of these books? I'd love to have something like this, if its actually good. The first one is specifically for long hair.

Here are a few online:
http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/book/browse?type=lcsubc&key=Hairdressing

I would think the recipes and tips in these book might contain ingredients which are not readily available, and you could run into some outdated myths like the infamous 100 strokes with the brush every evening. I haven't read either of the books on your list, though.

Those look really neat, but the prices are way too high for my pocketbook! I do find old fashioned hairstyles very interesting (for instance, like the ones on Little House on the Prairie, my favorite show of all time).

This isn't one of the books on your list, but a while ago there was this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=18369&highlight=vintage+styles), where a member gave a review of another vintage styling book, also some photos of a style she tried from the book. Sounded intriguing, though not focused on long hair.

I haven't read any of those books, but I have a pdf version of a book called 1940s Hairstyles by Daniela Turudich. I can't remember where I found it on the web, so I can't give you a link, but I'll e-mail it to you if you want. I'll need your e-mail addres for that, though, since it's impossible to attach files to the emails we can send through LHC, so I understand if you don't want to.

I have that too! It's brilliant, but not very aimed at long hair. I got it off this site:

You're right, it isn't aimed at long hair, but it has a wealth of basic info about techniques that can be adapted to suit longer hair, and we do have lots of members at shorter lengths who can use many of the hairdos pictured as is.

I'm at nearly waist length right now and have no problem pulling off a 40s look.

I often use a pincurl set for Veronica Lake waves when I want to wear my hair down.

Setting the front in medium height pompadours around a side or center part, with or without a roll, means I can do nearly anything with the back and still have the right look.

If I have leftover pincurls I can make a nape ponytail that has nice curl. I can put the back into a french twist, or a low bun or a low roll or even leave it down and it looks right because the front looks right.

In my album I scanned the Veronica Lake how-to pages. In that other book.

Thanks so much for the replies everyone! Sorry I didn't get back sooner, I've been writing a big scary review paper and haven't been lurking as much as usual.

My hair is a bit long for a lot of the hairstyles in the pdf, but I'm sure most can be adapted. I'm actually more into victorian type hairstyles, which I think I posted the second link for. If I ever find exactly what I'm looking for I'll take lots of pics and post here. I almost want a video camera so I could do hair tutorials, but I'm a big scaredy cat.
