Anybody have any ideas how one can vary the half-ups? The standard "clip it back with a clip/barette/slide" is getting a bit old. I'm looking for a way to make it look more fancy, more dressy, but still very easy to do.

Yeah, I'm an updo idiot.

My hair is layered, and the top layers are 1-3" above shoulder length.

TIA :blossom:

Hi- What about making a flip and then doing the barrette/slide? You could also braid what is left over?

In this picture, check out the bottom right hand side:

You do not need a tool for this, you can just use your fingers.

Dressy Tresses (http://www.dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/default.asp) has some fancy half-up instructions. With your current length and layers, updos probably won't hold well. These half-ups seem to require barrettes or clips. But they look pretty.

You can also take the hair you're pulling back and do any of the updos -- figure 8, KL Knot, infinity, wrapped bun .....

French or Dutch braiding the top half only looks cute!

Oh I forgot- also something like this, but a half up version (just the twist parts):

You could secure it with a clip/slide or a special hairband with like sparkly rhinestones. Pin/secure or use styling gel as needed.

For Summer what about a deep side part with a sort of hairband braid into a half up clip?

I agree- dressy tresses should give you some jumping off points for ideas.

There are a lot of styles you can adapt into a shorter/half up version. Half up buns are always cute.

Wow! Thank you everybody, now I know what to do tomorrow: try out new hair styles! :cheese:

I'm definitly going to bookmark Dressy Tresses, and all your suggestions will make me practice on my braiding. And that is needed. And I love the idea of trying out buns on my top layer only, maybe that will teach me the techniques so I can adapt them for all my hair when it gets longer.

Can you do braids? On my daughter I sometimes part the hair in the center and make a braid on each side with the hair that would go into the half-up, then bring the braids to the back of the head and tie them together with some ribbon. My daughter's hair has three layers (from growing out bangs), the shortest of which is almost touching her shoulders.

I have also done other half-ups with her involving mini-buns or dutch braiding, but those may be a little more difficult.

Oops, I should have re-loaded before responding. It looks like others have given you plenty of good advice. :)

I love the half-up style and have recently discovered NightBlooming on Etsy's "Hair brooches" which make it look a lot more dressy, but still hold nice and firmly. Here are my two (sorry pics are rather large)

It sounds very pretty! I need to improve my braiding, but if I'm going to spend all day tomorrow in front of the mirror, I sure will try that out! :)
