May
Traditional Japanese kanzashi are trailing purple wisteria (fuji) and flag irises (ayame), usually of the blue variety. Irises denote the height of spring. Small silver butterflies also pop up as extra decorations in May.

May 1st 2009
For over 3000 years, May 1 has been a day to welcome summer. It is also an international labour holiday in many countries especially those with Communist or Socialist governments. May Poles symbolize a tree during this holiday. They are decorated with ribbons and dancers circle it on May Day. For hundreds of years May Poles have been linked with freedom and the rights of common people because they were erected on common land and the whole community celebrated.

This month is the rainy season in Japan and therefore willow (a water loving tree) and the washy blue of hydrangea is appropriate.

Traditional Japanese kanzashi are featuring a display of fans. These will usually be of the round uchiwa variety, but occasionally folding dancing fans are also featured. The fans featured in a maiko's July kanzashi varies each year, in line with the Gion Festival. There are common themes such as dragonflies and lines denoting swirling water. Other kanzashi worn during July are the fireworks kanzashi and tsuyushiba (dew drops on grass).

Traditionally maiko visit the Minamiza Theatre and ask two of their favourite Kabuki actors to autograph them with their Kabuki nom de plume. Some December kanzashi also include bamboo leaves.

At this time of year all maiko and geisha wear unhusked rice ears on the right side of their coiffure. These kanzashi also feature eyeless white doves. The maiko and geisha fill in one eye and ask somebody they like to draw the other.

The design of the traditional kanzashi in Japan differs from year to year, but usually has an auspicious Japanese New Year theme. Shouchikubai is a popular choice, a combination of pine (matsu), bamboo (take) and ume blossom, (green, red and white) which is usually associated with celebrations.

The Scots, Poles and Russians celebrate St. Andrew's Day. Andrew was the first of Christ's apostles and travelled widely preaching the Christian gospel, until he was crucified by a Roman governor.

The Japanese make mochi at this time of year, and often decorate trees with them, to represent white flowers. It is thought to be good luck to wear kanzashi featuring mochibana, or rice cake flowers. December kanzashi also feature two maneki which are tiny blank tags. Traditionally maiko visit the Minamiza Theatre and ask two of their favourite Kabuki actors to autograph them with their Kabuki nom de plume. Some December kanzashi also include bamboo leaves.

St. Nicholas day
In honour of St. Nicholas Dutch and German communities celebrate. The Dutch say that Sint Nikolaas or Sinterklass and his helper Zwarte Piet or Black Pete would travel by horse to homes. Children would leave out a pair of polished shoes filled with hay and carrots. If the children were good it was replaced with candy and gifts. If the children were not good, Black Pete would leave a piece of coal.

A festival of light that marks the beginning of the Christmas season for people from Scandinavian countries. They say, St. Lucia comes to make the darkness disappear. Lucia means Light. To celebrate, the female playing the role of St. Lucia wears a white dress with a red sash and a crown of candles

Las Posadas
The Hispanic community prepares for the arrival of Christmas with processions called Posadas. This represents the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph on the nine nights before Jesus' birthday. The novena (a prayer said on nine consecutive days) of Las Posadas traditionally begins on December 16th and continues through Christmas Eve, each night a search for shelter, a series of refusals, and a final resting place. Today, Las Posadas is usually condensed into one evening, Christmas Eve, and the final festivities are always followed with Midnight Mass.

Christmas Eve
Many families celebrate Christmas Eve with dinners, visiting and carol-singing, followed by midnight church services. Norwegians say that Christmas Peace descends at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Polish families believe Christmas Eve celebrations begin when the first star is spotted, symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem. Italian families often fast for 24-hours prior to Christmas Eve then gather to eat a meatless meal on the eve. Germans call the night before Christmas Heilig Abend, meaning holy night. Attending midnight mass is said to be a way to rejoice in the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The Portuguese call their midnight mass the Missa do Galo, meaning a mass for the rooster.

Kwanzaa
A professor, Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, wanted to encourage African Americans to celebrate their heritage so he started Kwanzaa in California in 1966. Traditionally beginning December 26, families exchange gifts and have African cultural feasts and festivities. The word "Kwanzaa" is an East African word which means "first fruits" and refers to the celebration of the harvest of first crops in traditional African society. Kwanzaa is based on seven principles, collectively called Nguzo Saba, and is celebrated for seven days

Although there are no historical evidence for this even, this catholic Holy Day is observed in commemoration of the described slaughter of male infants in Bethlehem in the bible during Herod the Great's attempt to kill the infant Jesus. It is a time for children to be especially blessed in church.

New years
At this time of year all maiko and geisha wear unhusked rice ears on the right side of their coiffure. These kanzashi also feature eyeless white doves. The maiko and geisha fill in one eye and ask somebody they like to draw the other.

Kinda' off topic quesiton, but it relates to the May = Japanese part. Anybody know where I can order some of those beautiful traditional Japanese (geisha style) hair combs, etc.? I have found a couple of sites, but it's $150+ for a comb. :rolleyes:
