I got the idea of making an article listing the different holidays and events for different countries and then listing ideas for dressing your hair up. The idea popped up at st. Patrick’s day actually…

I haven’t listed all the holidays where I couldn’t find a specific date. As in the “celebrated somewhere in so-and-so month” and “the festival is held the 14th night of the seventh lunar month” events are not listed here

Traditional Japanese kanzashi are trailing purple wisteria (fuji) and flag irises (ayame), usually of the blue variety. Irises denote the height of spring. Small silver butterflies also pop up as extra decorations in May.

May Poles symbolize a tree during this holiday. They are decorated with ribbons and dancers circle it on May Day. Memorial Day began in the United States on May 30, 1868, after the Civil War had ended. Flowers were put on the graves of both sides, in order to help heal the nation. It was later expanded to include all men who had died in America's wars.

Traditional Japanese kanzashi are trailing green willow (yanagi) leaves with pinks, or less commonly hydrangea (ajisai) flowers. Willow is a traditional image associated with geisha. This month is the rainy season in Japan and therefore willow (a water loving tree) and the washy blue of hydrangea is appropriate.

Traditional Japanese kanzashi are featuring a display of fans. These will usually be of the round uchiwa variety, but occasionally folding dancing fans are also featured. The fans featured in a maiko's July kanzashi varies each year, in line with the Gion Festival. There are common themes such as dragonflies and lines denoting swirling water. Other kanzashi worn during July are the fireworks kanzashi and tsuyushiba (dew drops on grass).

Traditional Japanese kanzashi are featuring purple morning glory (asagao) or susuki grass. The susuki grass appears as a starburst of spines. Senior maiko wear silver-white and junior maiko wear pink or red.

Louis Riel was a famous Metis leader who helped his people form a government and become part of the newly created Dominion of Canada in 1870. The Japanese make mochi at this time of year, and often decorate trees with them, to represent white flowers. It is thought to be good luck to wear kanzashi featuring mochibana, or ricecake flowers. December kanzashi also feature two maneki which are tiny blank tags. Traditionally maiko visit the Minamiza Theatre and ask two of their favourite Kabuki actors to autograph them with their Kabuki nom de plume. Some December kanzashi also include bamboo leaves.

In honour of St. Nicholas Dutch and German communities celebrate. The Dutch say that Sint Nikolaas or Sinterklass and his helper Zwarte Piet or Black Pete would travel by horse to homes. If the children were not good, Black Pete would leave a piece of coal.

At this time of year all maiko and geisha wear unhusked rice ears on the right side of their coiffure. These kanzashi also feature eyeless white doves. The maiko and geisha fill in one eye and ask somebody they like to draw the other.

The design of the traditional kanzashi in Japan differs from year to year, but usually has an auspicious Japanese New Year theme. Shouchikubai is a popular choice, a combination of pine (matsu), bamboo (take) and ume blossom, (green, red and white) which is usually associated with celebrations.

If you count from December 25, the Twelfth Night would be January 5th. Custom was that people had a King of Bean and sometimes a Queen, on Twelfth Night to preside over the revelries for the end of the season. The King and Queen were the pair who found a special bean found inside a cake called a galette or gateau des rois. Some Europeans celebrate Twelfth Night by going out to sing and wassail or drink to the health of their neighbours, animals and orchards. Wassail is an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning be whole.

The Japanese make mochi at this time of year, and often decorate trees with them, to represent white flowers. It is thought to be good luck to wear kanzashi featuring mochibana, or ricecake flowers. December kanzashi also feature two maneki which are tiny blank tags. Traditionally maiko visit the Minamiza Theatre and ask two of their favourite Kabuki actors to autograph them with their Kabuki nom de plume. Some December kanzashi also include bamboo leaves.

At this time of year all maiko and geisha wear unhusked rice ears on the right side of their coiffure. These kanzashi also feature eyeless white doves. The maiko and geisha fill in one eye and ask somebody they like to draw the other.

These are several Japanese holidays I can think of right now. They are age specific, though.

November 15th
Shichi-Go-San (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shichi-Go-San) Girls aged 3 or 7 usually wear Tsumami Kanzashi (Chirimen fabric flowers) and/or Gin Bira Kanzashi (kanzashi with many silver thin plates).

I LOVE that idea!! I always want to dress up my hair for holidays when I'm teaching, and this is GREAT!

I'm in Canada, so the holidays we celebrate are:

New YEars Eve/Day--I'd think updo with anything sparkly/glittery woven in.

Valentine's Day---definately red/hearts somehow encorparated :)

St. Patrick's Day--Green---you could make it a 'earth' theme with flowers along with green ribbon so you can promote 'green day' along with using a shamrock and flowers.

Easter(can be March or April)--I'd love to do a flower chain/crown for my hair, but at work, that wouldn't go over well...the horses would eat them! Hahahah. I think think pastel colors of ribbons/hair accessories would be great!

Victoria Day (may)--- I'd love this to be something outdoorsy--flowers and natural colors. It's a big 'party' weekend in our area, but I'm not sure what the actual holiday stands for anymore ;)

Canada Day--July 1st---definatly red and white (I'm American, but I still acknowledge Canadian holidays!). Very often, we celebrate both Canada Day and the 4th of July here at horse shows--the kids have a blast with their horses in the games classes and use the colors of both flags. We tend to do our hair in fair funky braids, and use colored ribbons (face paint as well on horses and riders!) I have to take photos for you all :)

Those are the only ones I can think of (outside of Xmas and the common holidays--Halloween etc) :)
