View Full Version : Curly hair, straight bangs/fringe

I was going to take picture of the shorter hairs around my front hairline to post for a certain thread, and in the process realized anew just how many there are! In particular at my front center hairline, I have more hairs with a very short terminal length than I have noticed on anyone else. Always have, looking at my childhood pictures; in most I have an enormous halo, even with the very thick bang I had for about 7 years.

So, on the spur of the moment I cut a fringe/bang. :) Don't worry, I don't regret it (I have been thinking of it for some time, but didn't want to lose length - but I didn't lose any to speak of after all)! The hairs were all no longer than chin and now they are level with the middle of my nose- and they blend right back into the rest of my hair easily, so if this doesn't work out I will just wear them swept back into the curls around my face.

My real question: How do those of you with wavy/curly hair style your bangs so they are straight and have a nice 'fall'? Irons/blowdrying? Products? What techniques do you use?

I am a bangs newbie since I haven't had them since I was about 11. I have fluffy, curly 3a hair that's fairly easy to straighten. The fringe isn't curly at this length, but it wants to wave to one side or the other, and also to 'flip' out at the ends. This shouldn't be so pronounced when I shorten them a bit, but I don't want to do that until I'm exactly sure how short I want them to be, and I need to know how to get them to lie flat so I can decide!

Thanks all! Oh, and I would love to see pictures of everyone's bangs, curly or not.

I blowfry mine with a round brush.

I use a flat iron for my bangs....I don't really get concerned because I'm always trimming them anyways.

ditto. I trim them myself about every 4-6 weeks, depending on how annoying they get. I pull the whole thing together and cut with the tips of the scissors pointed up as I don't like blunt cut bangs. I also have a cowl lick on the right side of my forehead that makes me NUTS! I'll upload a pic of my *eek* face... hang on.

sorry if my huge head jumps out at you in advance...

I do mine the same way, and I also have a cowl lick on the right side that drives me nuts. I always trim when dry so I can leave it a bit longer on the right side

Your fringe looks great by the way. :)

Thanks for the pics and advice, everyone!

I can't decide if I want a straight fringe or side-swept bangs.. I'm leaning towards straight, as I want to 'shorten' my long face.

Mine are about chin to collarbone length and I just let them be. If I comb them they stay mostly straight, but otherwise have some neat waves going on.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i194/curlsgirl/DSC060612.jpg This is from last summer but I wear them like this still. I often push mine to the side even though they are cut straight across. I use a round brush and a blow dryer and then a curling iron to straighten if they need a touch-up from day to day. They stay that way pretty well since I am 3a too and mostly my curls start farther on down from my scalp.

I can also pin them back if I want in the summer if it's too hot. LOVE them.

Round brush here, too. But my hair is pretty straight, anyway, if I don't do anything to it.

Rhubarbarin, I love your avatar! :crush:

When my hair is wet I comb it so it's not so curly, then I flat-iron my bangs once they've dried.
I can't use a round-brush and blowdryer, 1. My skills with blowdryers are painfully bad, 2. It turns my hair into a giant puff-ball.

I don't normally add any products to them.... If anything I use products (like leave-in conditioner) only on the rest of my hair because bangs are the first part to get oily, sweaty and gross. >_<

Sometimes my bangs slope downward first
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z29/mugglemomof3/hair/bangsgodownfirst.jpg

and then sometimes they end up sloping up first and then down. I can never decide which I like better.

I usually leave the house with my length sopping wet and my bangs blown out.

and then I wear them back alot too - usually held with a tiny claw clip

Aw, how cute are everyone's bangs! I'm growing mine out right now, but y'all make me want to keep them. I usually just comb through them as they dry, that straightens them out enough for me.

GOSH your hair is pretty!

I'm not a curly, I'm a wavy, and I can usually get them fairly straight by just combing them periodically while they air dry. They get straight enough that way for me!

I'm a wavy with blunt bangs; I used to wear them sideswept and long, and eyelash-tickling blunt and long, but both required a minute or two with the straight iron or hairdryer to get them sitting right (due both to the slight wave which made them look really weird, and the very annoying way my hair parts).

I got sick of "styling" them, so I cut them quite short - above where the wave starts. It's a different look, a bit dramatic, slightly "Spock" like ;), but I have a long, narrow face and I think (I hope) I pull off the look.

I don't have pics I'd like to share on the main board, sorry!

For years I straightened them with a barrel brush and blowfryer, then hairsprayed the ever-loving crap out of them. Then I started wearing my parting off center and left my bangs naturally curl to the sides. They look great this way 90% of the time, so I don't stress about the few times I have a bad bang day. It's faster and easier to let then side-sweep in their own way.

Here's my hair, it's wavy but blown out for special pictures. :)

For the bangs, I just use the dryer on them with a brush and if they don't behave I'll get them with a flat iron...I don't like the flat iron too much as it makes them hang straight down and look too much like a paintbrush. LOL

I use a large barrel curling iron on mine and have for years. It is the one sign of order on an otherwise unruly head.

Some call them bangs, but most people go with face-framing layers when they're that length.

On topic: You could also try pinning them back overnight and then blowdrying if you have trouble with going from curly directly to straight. Sometimes just pinning works, I think.

I would say "face framing layers" or could be long "bangs" or some might call it a "fringe". Or you could think up your own name for them :D

I have quite long bangs, so I can in emergency situation just keep them in side. But I like them straight and covering my forehead and eyebrows because as I said, they are long and even longer now because I've been too lazy to notice they've been growing too long (I'm going to get the scrissors and cut them after I type this post..).
If I have failed to get them dry straight (comb them straight when they're wet and check that they also stay straight), I will just take the straightening iron and.. Iron them? I've never got the results I want with blowdryer, too poofy for me : )

When my bangs were short and I wanted to have them, I flat ironed them every morning. Now that they've grown to be jaw length face framing layers, I simply pin them back after I wash until they air dry completely and then pin then back every night. Keeps them quite straight even with my very curly and not so easy to keep straight hair.

I tried bangs for a while. OMG! They drove me nuts. On days they looked "right" I LOVED them... but... usually that only happened on wash day and no amount of product, styling, heat, prayer or screaming seemed to fix them when I was having one of those weird days when hair isn't straight and isn't curly. Now they have grown to somewhere around shoulder length. Some days I would still love to have bangs for this tall forehead of mine... but:shrug: for now I've given up.
