Does anyone/has anyone ever used extensions to help you get over an akward stage? I was thinking about trying it, but while it may help with the thickness, I cant seem to find any that are longer than my hair (which isnt that long-whats the point?!)

I haven't... But you're right, it is hard to find very long extensions. Usually those need to be put in at the salon.
I'm not anti-extension, but just keep in mind that if you get used to a certain amount of thickness, when you remove them, you might be even less happy with your natural hair..
But anyway, I do have friends who wear hair extensions. One for length, and they are very long to her TB. And the other wears them for thickness and strange colors. The one with the colors puts them in herself and she cant find anything longer than BSL. And other one gets them done professionally for a few thousand dollars.

Hair extensions are very damaging to your hair, unless you are talking about the clip-in kind.
Hair extensions with glue, especially, are the worst, as they tear your hair out at the root and increase breakage.
I honestly wouldn't take a chance unless you want to make it a permanent change for your hair. You should also consider the upkeep on those- they have to be washed and dried differently from your regular hair. Hair extensions cannot be allowed to dry naturally (unless they are curly, I think). They HAVE to be blowdried to avoid tangles. Once they are tangled, they cannot be untangled otherwise you risk tearing your hair out at the roots.

If you do want extensions, try to find a place that pinchbraids them in.
Instead of glue or rings, they braid the extension in with a tiny bit of hair, and tie it off with a piece of thread so it is less than half an inch long. It is the least damaging method of hair extensions.

But Ohio Sky, your hair is long! I know that we get jaded by looking at some of the extreme lengths here at LHC, but honestly, by any real world standards, you have long hair! :flowers:

If you can't find any that are longer than your current hair, then your hair IS long (by society's standards). :twocents: And if your hair is that long, I see no point in bothering with extensions. Bun it or something until it gets a smidge longer if you find the length awkward.
I get comments all the time about how long my hair is, and it's only at BSL, give or take. I still feel like my hair is short, but nobody IRL agrees with me.

My sister recently got extensions, and frankly they weren't that bad looking, nor expensive and apparently didn't take a very long time to do.
We went to an Afro-Caribbean hair store, where there is hair as long as yours and as long as mine and even longer. She got synthetic (cheaper) straight hair that was sewn onto wefts (she even got two free bangs :p). She used a silicone based glue, which only holds for two weeks or so depending on your washing schedule, but is much kinder to hair. It sorts of peels off your fingers like school glue. I wasn't there when she did it, but they said it took about an hour to do, it was just snipping the wefts into smaller chunks and parting the hair and gluing them at the roots in even spaces so it looked natural.
If it helps you with a difficult stage I don't see why not. But just so you know, your hair is long and it's lovely.
I bought some emerald green hair at the shop that I'm going to braid a chunk of into my hair :D.

About a year ago, I tried clip in extensions from http://www.headkandy.com/
They look really natural and the nice thing is, there's no damage to your real hair, if you're careful. It is pricey, but for very nice, real hair extensions, they were the least expensive that I could find.

I'd recommend you don't get the rubber bonded ones. Mine were very expensive and the "bobbles" on my scalp were so annoying I took them out after 3 weeks. They also took rather a lot of my hair with them, owing to the weight. I'll never know how these celebrities that have them all the time aren't bald :nono:
Having said that, it was a big thrill at first to have really long hair :D
The clip-ins chrissy-b linked to look good though...

I have had extensions once. My cousin does her hair often, at least once a year. I think it is damaging but its really damaging when you have no patience and rip them off your head before they are ready like my mom. Your natural oils in your hair will glide them out when they are ready or you can use baby oil. My mom has thin hair so shes scalp sensitive and isn't used to her hair weighing a lot like us thick haired girls. Also she didn't like the bumps like Unofficial Rose mentioned. None the less she got used to them and has done them a couple of more times and they make her thin hair look good. When i got them done last year for my birthday I got human hair not synthetic and they only cost me about $100 bucks for a 20" bag i had them placed by my cousin underneath my layers they were med blonde just for a highlighting effect instead of putting bleach in my hair. I used a line called "eve hair" minky yaki style $90.00 and glue called African Essence Bonding Glue Salon Pro $1.99. With the human hair you wash it the same except not as much and no conditioner at the roots, and you can color them curl them straighten them whatever you do to your hair. REMEMBER if you don't know if you ll like them put like 3 lines of the hair in your hair and see if you like them if you don't then don't put them in and they'll save you some strands. If you go to a local African American hair store you can look around be friendly and ask if they know anyone that puts them in it is real easy though if you do go forward with them i can give you a detailed explanation on how to put them in anyone can do it as long as you know how to use a blow dryer. Your hair is a good length though.

The problem with extentions and such is that if they are left in for more then a few weeks, the hair above the extentions starts tangling (better to say: becoming dreadlocks!). I know people who had them and they said it happens, no matter how well you care for them (special brush, constant detangling when drying). So when they are taken out that part of hair that is tangled has to be detangled but it's not possible without breakage. It will break right close to your head, so that breakage will take ages to grow back!
I think the suggestion of clip in ones is the best way to go. By the way, your hair looks great!
