View Full Version : Bunning BSL, thick hair

I'm a little bit "up-do challenged" and am wondering if anyone can explain how they bun their BSL (or a little longer), thick hair.

I tried bunning my hair today - first I made a ponytail, then twisted it into a bun and secured it with a three-pronged comb, and then used three hair screws to make it extra secure, and it still didn't hold (I admit I did have to run to catch the tram!).

I could bun my hair when it was shorter, but now it tends to turn out looking a bit like a snail shell (i.e. multiple coils) and just doesn't stay in place. I'd love to really master this style as I think there's nothing more elegant than a bun at the nape of the neck.

I have BSL, fairly thick hair and it is very difficult to do any of the coiled buns on my hair. A cinnabun just won't hold. I can get a beebutt bun to hold, but I don't really like how it looks. When I make it into an infinity or figure 8, I like the look, but it pulls free pretty easily.

I've had my best success so far with the lazy wrap bun. I put one in my hair this morning, in fact, and it has held all day long! :cheese: It's definitely my go-to bun ... for now ...

i second the lazy wrap bun. my hair is on the thicker end of a ii, but shorter. the lazy wrap bun is perhaps the one bun that, once you perfect it, will keep your hair up all day long. you can add extra sticks for strength, but they aren't necessary.

I was unable to do a bun at all until I was almost waist length. I was able to do a very tight something at about 29" but it was very tight. I was able to do a figure 8 slightly past waist length (roughly 31") but it would fall easily, same with a lazy wrap bun. I still can't do a cinnamon bun that looks like a cinnamon bun, mine looks like a big, round donut.

I have the same problem. Mine is a little shorter than yours, but very thick and I just can't do buns yet. I'll have to check out a tutorial on how to do the lazy wrap bun thingy. Maybe I could do that? I've ordered a few hair sticks lately and I'm disappointed that I can't make them work.

Oh, I wanted to add, if I have a big fat scrunchie I can get a bun to hold.

I also have thick BSL hair. Unfortunately, it's also quite slippery! I have had good luck with the Easy Twist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8BAbYHqr-Y). I always have a funny tail sticking out, but it holds very well. It works with a fork or one stick. Here's an example:

Thanks Kerynna - I think the lazy wrap just might be a possibility! It's going to need some practice, though!

And sagebabies, I'm the same, with a big scrunchie I can get it to hold!

Avalonna, I'll keep practising the easy twist, but *blush* even styles called "easy" aren't so easy for me!

Leneveu----I still have trouble with some bun styles due to excessive thickness and my hair is a few inches longer than yours (32). Don't feel bad. The infinity bun is easy for me. You can find a lot of cool styles http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=8235 ( I don't know if this link will work) under the "Mane Forum, then "Links to VITs-Very Important Threads" up by the top, then "Hairstyle Instruction Links."

I love the lazy wrap bun!!

Yay! I'm so glad it is working out for you. It's been working really well for me too; I can even do it now without needing a mirror!

I have very thick hair, a fraction past BSL.

Cinnabuns work for me but I need to use 2 hairsticks in a cross (or occasionally just the one).

Normally, though, I wear my chignony lumpy bun thing. See this thread. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=15537) In the video, I put my finger above the ponytail and make a loop, which I wrap the hair around, which worked when my hair was above BSL but not now. Just do it flat :) And you'll need a pin or two to hold the side down that isn't fastened (for me it's the right-hand side but if you wrap the other way it'll be the left). Not the most elegant bun, but it works.

I feel your pain. I wear my hair in a bun all the time, but I have to redo it multiple times during the day because they just don't stay. I'm nearly at waist and it's just barely starting to get easier. But not much. Lazy wrap buns......good stuff. Same with equilibrium buns, but I can't really wrap them around, they're just lumps on the back of my head with a fork through. And NOTHING stays up if I have to run.
