View Full Version : Does 100% pure amla oil exist? Mineral free?

Hello my dears,

I was just wondering whether 100% pure amla oil exists? (Or is at least commercially available?)

Most of the discussions I can find in the archives are all about Dabur or Vatika amla oils, which are apparently mineral-based.

My hair LOOOVES the amla, but in my bid to be hair-healthy, I'd prefer a minera-free amla oil.

Any ideas? Links? I am wary of differnent countries' product disclosure standards, and would like to buy from a trusted dealer, with assurance it is pure.

When I google "100% pure amla oil" most of the links have sneaky little descriptions like "We sell Amla oil made of pure Amla fruit (with a natural oil base.)"...what is the base?

Thanks, Yvette

Thanks Aisha :)

I have looked through a few brands, but they tend to be blends with other oils (almond, jasmine, lemon etc.) but then say "and a base of mixed oil" or "and a base of other oils."

And how do you make your own!?

Ok usually in Indian amla oil it will have other ingredients like brahmi and such.

If you want to make sure it is pure be sure to read all ingredients and base oil should only be coconut or sesame.http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkkyN2ehJlWMBJXJXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyNGozdjZ oBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA0Y3NTVfOTY-/SIG=12kv6t7uo/EXP=1240083213/**http%3a//www.tattvasherbs.com/brahmi%2520amla%2520hair%2520oil.htm
This is a good oil!

I make my own by boiling whole amla into coconut oil on my stove then let it cool down and strain into glass jar.

Thanks Aisha,

I'm still googling around for a simpler oil with just a few ingredients, if not just amla.

As for you own oil - wow! How inspiring! I wonder if I can get my hands on fresh amla here in Perth? Probably not...

How interesting! I may just have to get that oil at Tattva's. . .I can't just buy one thing though, you know to offset the shipping, you have to buy at least two things. So what else do I need? roflol

Aisha. . .I want to play at your house! You're so inspiring.

Edited to add: I just ordered the oil at Tattva's. I was really happy to see that they accept Paypal!

Now, how do I use this oil that I've just ordered? LOL

Will let you all know how it goes.

You won't find oil made 'from' amla. It's made by insing in carriar oil. That said, Vatica Coconut Hair Oil is based on cocnutoil, amla, henna, and other herbs. Smells like lemon. I have it and like it. It was 4.00 at the indian store. It is solid at low temps like coc. oil.

gmdiaz - definitely let me know how the oil goes!

As for the vatika oils - I'm trying to avoid the mineral base - I suppose I'm going to have to settle for a mixer with a gentle base like Aisha said. The problem is choosing!

From Nature With Love has amla infused in sesame oil. (http://fromnaturewithlove.com/product.asp?product_id=ayuroilamla&searchflag=1) It's a nice product. Says it's unscented but it actually smells a bit smoky. Not a bad scent but as if you'd been sitting by a campfire.

FWIWI, I've ordered quite a few products from this company and have found them all fresh and of very high quality.

Sorry to hijack but.....

Aisha Is it possible to make your own infused oil using powders? Like boil the powders in the oil or put them in a jar and then drain through cheesecloth or something? Thanks to your many posts on the subject :D i am ordering my first batch of indian herbs and am very excited! I just need to know what to do with them besides wash my hair :p I am also having a hard time finding an oil without mineral oil in its base. I like what i have and dont liek to mess around to much with things that are difficult to wash out *shrugs*.

TIA

Just to repeat what AmericanWoman said, the dabur vatika coconut oil does not contain mineral oil
Here are the ingredients
Coconut Oil, Neem, Brahmi, Fruit extracts of Amla, Bahera and Harar, Kapur Kachri, Henna, Milk, Rosemary Oil, Lemon Oil, TBHQ, Fragrance
It is the only dabur oil that i have found that does not contain mineral oil though so if you want to avoid that you are wise to be cautious.

Natalia i don't see any reason not to use the powders for making herb oils if you want to.....i plan on using them for that too :)

Does anybody know if you can alter the *strength* of the infusion in a carrier oil? Is there an "absolute saturation"-type point?

I'd want to go for the strongest amla infusion I could get...

Just received my bottle of Brahmi Amla hair oil from Tattva's Herbs. Thought I would pop in to say that they shipped my order really quickly and I had absolutely no problems ordering from their website.

And it just occurs to me. . .I have no real idea how to use the oil! lol So I am open to suggestions., I guess I'll start with rubbing a bit on my scalp and message it in carefully, see if my two cats disown me.

The oil is a little bit stinky but not bad. The smell reminds me of some types of cough syrup. Tipping a bit onto my fingertips, it looks like motor oil.

Here goes. . .

Hi
When I go to denver I will checkout for whole amla. I found whole amla in amazon.com for $35/1lb. Which is another option if I really want the whole amla.

I grind fresh hibiscuss leaves and flowers, methi, curryleaves, greengram dhal, & mix it with cooked rice water, soak my hair for 1 hr, and wash it of with shikakai, amla, soapnut, neem, powder. I used this method 10 years back before I came to USA. i used to have very good hair, now I lost so much hair. I want to follow the same again.

Thanks

Wonder HOW long a pound of whole amla would last? A long long long long time, I bet.

Your routine sounds really interesting. . .hard to get all those fresh ingredients, especially here in Colorado where high altitude gardening is soooooo tough.

How are you thinking to get "the stuff" to work with? Some of those ingredients, I've seen on Amazon, where at least you can get the boxed Hesh powders and the soapnuts. And I've seen the hibiscous leaves and flowers in powder form available too on some website.

Sure hoping you get your "good" hair back! Be sure to take before and after photos so you can see your progress!

Hi,
I searched hardly, Vitamin cottage carry hibiscuss flower whole, pink rose buds whole, I will grind in the indian mixer.
I will hoefully find other ingredients as well soon. Need to work on that.

One of my grandma said that I shoud boil the coconut oil with licorice powder which will help for hair regrowth. Not sure but will try that soon.

I never tried it as it would be very messy and coarse for the scalp. I never really saw anyone do it with good results so I wouldnt try it.

I am thinking of making a paste with curry leaves, methi leaves, amla powder, brahmi powder in the blender and add it into the hot oil. Hopefully it will work. if it is too powdery in oil I will filter it with the tea filter. Do you think it will work?

Make a paste of amla powder available in Indian stores add it to the coconut oil and boil it till the moisture evaporates. The residue of the amla is flitered off and the oil can be use to massage the hair. Any herbal extract can be used here in the place of amla and the coconut oil boiled in the same way and the residue can be filtered off.

There is no such thing as pure amla oil. Only coconut oil is infused with the amla extract. Sometimes sesame seed oil can be used.

Okay, clearly I don't know how to experience blessings.

The bottle I tested is Aswin, Kalonji Oil and the oil is quite dark. I can't see through it, even with a light behind it. Spread in a thin layer on my hand, it's a very lovely transparent light golden brown shade.

Maybe I have the wrong oil? Old oil? Poor attitude?

I have read about kalonji after you had mentioned. Thats why I bought it online my Indian store does not have it.

I got another idea of fusing kalonji seeds with coconut oil to minimize the expence...I got the seeds from indian store. Because It is expensive to eat oil I am planning to eat them as seeds. Thanks for your recommendation.. It is working in my family.

Aisha25,

Can you help me find a good Kolonji oil online? I found a couple on Ebay, along with some seeds. Not sure what to get. But I'd like to try it for a month to see if I am feeling better.

When you and Birraj use the Kalonji oil for your hair. . .do you use the lemon or lime scalp treatment first? I've read that you can rub either on your scalp, let it sit for 15 minutes wash and as your hair is drying, apply the oil to the scalp. This treatment supposedly stops hair loss really quickly, within a week.

I don't have a lot of hair loss (well under 50 hairs a day) but I am still seeing that the bottom half of my hair is looking thin. I'd like to thicken it up!

I DID manage to get down a 1/2 teaspoon of the kalonji oil this afternoon without making a fuss. . .so maybe, you're right and I'll get accustomed to it. lol So much of pleasure or disgust is in your perception and how you choose to interpret it, that's for certain.

I sure did get used to the Bramhi Amla oil. . .I've come to love love love the smell of that one!

Hi
After Aisha told me about kalonji oil I bought it from amazon.com. I got it from relaince service from amazon.

I am not taking internally oil. But I eat seeds through cooking. My husband has drandruff because of that he is soaking his hair in lemon and fenugreek mixture. After the hair is dried well he put kalonji oil on head. He washes his hair everyother day. He put kalonji oil eveyday.

I use it eveyday in the morning when I comb my hair. I am not doing any lemon treatment in my hair.

So if you have drandruff you can use lemon otherwise plain kalonji will work.

All the best for your order. It takes time to get used to this.. You can try adding some honey into the oil mix well and drink it. In that way you will not have much problem.

I am already getting more used to it. . .on my hand it smells more like pecans. I can handle that. lol

Today, I talked my two office buddies into tryng the oil for 30 days. So we've got three bottles coming to the office from Amazon!

Will report our findings on it's use over 30 days.

We got our oil and are taking it daily!

Of course, my two friends, just about gagged the first time they tasted it. . .but they're toughening up and committed to the 30 day trial period. lol

I AM getting used to it. The new oil from Reliance does seem better quality than the first bottle I got from Ebay. I get a tiny bit of burning on the back of the throat. Not bad at all, kind of like ground black pepper maybe. The smell and the taste does remind me of seeds. Kind of yummy in a spicy way.

I am taking 1/2 teaspoon internally twice a day.

I use it as a scalp treatment. . .to prevent falling hairs, along with Brahmi Amla.

And I tried it last night as an asthma treatment. Can't say if it helped or not but I'll keep it up for a time.

And I use a little bit on my eyebrows and eyelashes. . .Brahmi Amla too. Dot a little under my eyes. . .later, rub any remainder on my whole face. Seems to be a good moisturizer but I am not sure how good it would be to use for an extended time. I mostly use it on my face at night before bed.

I am actually starting to love this oil! And that surprises me. It's not a good tasting oil but it does grow on you. I am thinking now that this is really wonderful for me.

But more time will tell. lol

Thats nice to hear Gmdiaz.
I am pretty sure it will help you. It is good for skin also. Today I had to go to a party and I took head bath after my hair is dry I applied this oil, so many ladies asked me some strange smell is comming what is that etc...I had to explain to them.

Nice that people are now accepting this.

The fragrance of this oil is odd and does not seem to fade. I would prefer that my hair smell like jasmine or roses, for instance. lol

I am only using this as a scalp treatment. . .pretty much everyday but hopefully, I can cut that down to a few days a week.

The Brahmi Amla smells odd too. . .but I think it smells wonderful, much better to me than the Kalonji.

On party days, I might go with jojoba and a rose petal spray or the Brahmi Amla. lol

Are you using soapnuts for washing? I am thinking that I am ready to try that next. :)

I don't understand the infusion process. My carrier oil of choice is sesame oil and I have amla powder and methi leaves that I mill into a powder. Why do I need to head the oil & powders (and how do I know if my oil is "ready"??), and will the powders dissolve? Do I need to restrain the oil after it has cooled down:confused:

You are right Gmdiaz, I should buy some fragrance oil. Even my kesavardhini is good choice to use when I go to party. I do like jasmine or rose both of them are very good. In India we get to buy jasmine flower everyday fresh and keep them in the head so that the odd smells goes away, here no chance of getting those.

Hi Retrokitchen,
You can use these powders when the oil is warmed up, keep it in the warm for around 2 hrs. The color of the oil will change in to more darker, the powders will not disolve, you have to filter the oil with fine cotton cloth or cheese cloth, I use the paint filter form homedepot. Finally squeeze the oil thorugh the powder.

Hope this helps.

Ok, so I heat the oil up - how do I know when to put the powders in?Should the oil be sizzling?
After two hours the oil is infused with the powders and I can filter it, did I get it right?

Thank you for your help :)

I do not know the exact temperature to put the powders in, because I cook a lot I know when the oil is ready, after you put the oil in a pan and switched on the burner, after 5 mins you will see little bit smoke comes from the oil at that time you have to add the powder and simmer the stove immediately and keep it for 2 hrs on very very low flame or warm. So that slowly the extracts get into the oil. after 2 hrs when the oil is cold you can filter.

Hope this helps.
