I've been here for over a year and a half, and I still don't know what VO5 is. It's really cheap conditioner, I know that much, but is "VO5" an abbreviation or the brand name? If it's an abbreviation, then what does it stand for?

VO5 is a brand name, but it appears as "Alberto" elsewhere. Here in Canada, the labels tend to say "Alberto" rather than "VO5". Same brand though.

Alberto VO5 is named after the chemist Alberto who invented Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing. VO5 stands for the five vital organic emollients in the hairdressing.

You can find V05 at Sally's Beauty Supply and in the beauty aisle of Walgreens, and often enough in grocery stores or Walmart's beauty area. They have a variety of products. The most well known is their V05 hot oil treatment (watch out, it has protein in it).

This is a brand name from many decades ago, now. As pointed out earlier in this thread, the complete brand name is Alberto V05.

The company that owns this is Alberto-Culver Co (ACV.N -- this their ticker name on wall street stocks)

article from July 28, 2008
The company, which makes Alberto V05 and Nexxus hair-care products as well as TRESemme, said quarterly net sales rose 12.3 percent to $364.9 million.

The company, which spun off its Sally Beauty Holdings Inc (SBH.N) business in November 2006, also owns Mrs. Dash seasonings and St. Ives body lotion.

This company apparently tests on animals.

Okay, thanks! I thought it was some abbreviation that I hadn't figured out. I'll look for it at Walgreens next time I'm there.

I have used it. It works somewhat for me.
