Your welcome. I was the first to bid and watched it like a hawk for over a day. I hope he puts up more hair stuff soon. :D

Ivory has a grain. Elephant ivory is the most dense and has the finest grain of all (the grain lines are closer together than on other kinds of ivory).

In an effort to avoid their extinction, it is illegal to trade in elephant ivory; even though there are many elephant ivory sellers on ebay.

Those are so pretty. I LOVE the $1 ones. What a bargain!

I hope it's not ivory because it's illegal and immoral, but it might be some other carved material. I would've hoped Ebay would have removed the listing if it claimed to be (or if it actually were) ivory.

Not entirely true. Fresh ivory is illegal, but you can buy fossilized ivory in the US, including walrus ivory.

I love the work by Art in Crafts. I've seen his pieces before and always admired them, though never anything I liked as much as what you found! :) The ivory(ish) one is cute as well, and I wouldn't chastise you even if it is/was real. I'm a fan of leather and fur in moderation, so what can I say? It seems like a good simple piece for half-ups. :)

I'm glad you've found the love of hair toy shopping on eBay! I always keep my eye out for good (and beautiful!) bargains. I suggest Etsy for your next conquest. ;) Ride on!

There is a great deal of freshly made elephant ivory items for sale on ebay. There is a huge market for it. As far as I can tell, ebay does nothing about it.

The problem lies with a few African countries which claim that their economy would suffer if they are not allowed to sell elephant ivory. Add to that the age-old problem with poaching, and you begin to see that it really becomes a moral issue. Buyers don't seem to care and ebay will not police it. What is even more interesting is that freshly carved ivory sells for very little, to be so very precious.

The ivory isn't fresh white ivory. It is a very small hair pin on 4 1/8" and thin. I am not going to feel bad about buying it though. If it wouldn't have been me it would have been someone else. It didn't specify what type of ivory it was but I don't think it was elephant ivory.

Just to clarify this issue for anyone who is interested, the color of ivory does not indicate age. Fresh ivory can quickly turn yellowish and old ivory can remain white forever. It is extremely difficult to determine the age of ivory, which may be another reason why the ban is difficult to enforce.

Frequently, ebay sellers will claim that their ivory was carved before the 1946 ban, so apparently the survival of elephants has been a global concern for at least 60 years.
