How do you know when your hair needs more protein? I know it gets weaker, but are there other signs? Also, what do use on it if it DOES need more protein?

Kirin's excellent Diagnostic article. It saved my hair. I should send her cookies or something. :hmm:

Hair that needs more protein tends to be described as overly stretchy and often as "mushy" or as feeling kinda like wet paper. (I haven't experienced this myself, but these descriptions keep appearing.)

What to use is a little harder... I have heard that conditioners that have "hydrolyzed" proteins work better than those without the proteins being broken down a bit. Hydrolyzed wheat protein shows up a lot, keratin appears a bit too, and so do "silk amino acids" but I don't know how effective they are. You can also pick up deep protein treatments at pharmacies and at beauty stores like Sally's. Hask Henna'n'Placenta comes up a bit, and people tend to like it. Sally's also makes an unscented conditioner called "Cure Care" which has keratin in it.

This is the best article I have yet seen about moisture and protein balance in hair:

That IS an impressive article! By reading that, I know that my balance is just about perfect. I was wondering about all of this because of how moisture-based my current regimen is, but from looking at those, my hair seems to be happy with the regimen I am already doing! Thanks guys!
