Hair pictures--henna streaks

Back in October I wanted to do something crazy with my hair so I found an awesome salon in Houston that put some streaks (conventional demi-permanent or so she said) on the sides just under the canopy--red on the right and purple on the left so you could just see them down and see them well pulled back.

Here's a shot of my normal hair color and you can just see the tiniest bit of the very faded purple on my side (and my first fare-isle knitting project--skull and crossbones cuff and a bit of my tattoo on the other wrist):

I loved the streaks--but it was pricey and the upkeep and damage it would cause in the long run was not my favorite so I decided to streak it with henna ( I like my original hair color too much to totally cover it with henna and I don't have the complexion for all-red).

I really like how it turned out! I think I might reapply a couple of times to see if I can get it a bit more red and less coppery as well. It was kinda fun.

So, Methodology--as requested! :D

1. I started out on the front of my head and separated out the strands I wanted to henna. I used a comb to part out sections starting with the old dyed ones and I wrapped a small polypropelene hair band around the locks about half way to the ends. I then pinned up the other hair in little bee-butt buns around the locks I wanted to henna away from the roots of the locks so I could get the henna all the way to the roots.

2. I worked my way around my head until I had a bunch of funny looking locks hanging down and goofy little buns everywhere else.

3. Had mixed up some Jamila BAQ henna from Mehandi several hours prior with strongly brewed hibiscus tea and slathered it on each lock after removing the hairband in the normal henna application technique. Just smooshed it everywhere on the lock and scalp. wadded/bunned the henna-gooped lock onto my head and pinned it with a plastic clip. Kept doing this till all the locks were coated--with help from DH :inlove:

4. Stuck a plastic cap over all of this and waited--left it on for 1.5 hours. Might go longer next time if I can stand it.

5. Rinsed with Nightshades method of glopping on a ton of cheap conditioner.

6. And--done! Funky Henna highlights resulted.

That looks fantastic!! I love how you took something expensive and damaging, and found a better way to get the same result. (Personally, I like the colors achieved with henna better than boxed color results anyway! There's just something about how the sun hits henna...:D)

Thanks for sharing. I'm trying to get to the bottom of the beautiful copper color some people have with henna.
