I just read on a page a short note about scientists have found a fungus called "'Basidiomycete ceriporiopsis" that makes hair go blonde using an enzyme the fungus itself produces. For extreme bleaching effects, it says, one still has to use peroxide, but much less than normally.
It really was only a short note so further research is needed here, but I found it pretty interesting.

That is really intriguing, though. I don't think I'll be putting fungus on my head however, because that is still a tad bit revolting.

I adore chemistry!

Is it found naturally in hair? Or is this something someone would have to choose to apply?

I wonder if the fungus damages the hair like bleach does? This is interesting.
