I use it in my hair oil blend, it's good stuff, but very very potent and needs to be diluted like an EO.

Search the archives for a thread on it. I used occasionally, I'm more likely to eat it though than put it on the skin/ hair.
This is what I have saved that I posted:
Sea buckthorn oil (Hippophae L.)
Russian: Oblepiha, oblepicha
Commonly found in the form of berry oil that is bright orange in color, can be used externally and internally. (The berries themselves, the jam and juice of these taste great too.)
It's popular in Eastern Europe so if you have a pharmacy run by people from there near you, it would be cheaper there. Plus the one sold there is also used as a dietary supplement. I've posted several things on this in the old LHC. It's used for digestive system problems, skin problems and general system decontamination as it is very high in anti oxidants, certain vitamins and minerals. It's considered a super food and they are trying to get it to grow in the US with some problems as it likes a salty and windy environment and nothing too hot. It grows wild in Russia, Finland and other nearby areas.
This site is in Russian but there is a list of vitamin and mineral amounts
http://oblepiha.net/
Rough Translation:
"Gardeners were right when they planted Sea Buckthorn. Few people know that not too long ago this shrub became part of the list of poly-vitamin plants. In folk medicine the fruits of sea buckthorn are used for pain relief, stomach ailments, vitamin C deficiency and shrinkage of blood vessels in the brain. Boiled concentrated fruit is used for skin illnesses. Flowers of sea buckthorn are used in cosmetics, as they soften skin.
Sea Buckthorn oil, produced from the fruit, is especially valued. It is used medicinally for sun UV effects on skin, stomach and small intestine ulcers, gynecological illnesses, eczema, hypertension, anemia and cataracts.
Sea buckthorn has dietary value. From the fruits jam, various preserved drinks (kompot, kisel), jelly, marmolade are made. In these products the vitamin and mineral content is preserved.
In 100 grams of sea buckthorn fruit:
Vitamin C - 54 -316 mg
Vitamin R (Bioflavonoid) 75-100 mg
Vitamin B (Thiamin) 0.016 -0.085 mg
B2 (Riboflavin) 0.030 - 0.056 mg
Be, B9 (Folic acid) 0.79 mg
Provitamin A (Carotene) 0.9 -10.9 mg
Vitamin E (tocopherol) 8 -18 mg
Vitamin K group (Phylloquinones) 0.9 - 1.5 mg
Vitamin F group (unsaturated fatty acids) in the oil up to 77%
In the sea buckthorn fruits there have been found 15 microelements (minerals) including: iron, magnesium, boron, sulfur, aluminum, selenium and titanium."
It does stain skin a yellow orange tint for a little while.

I don't think it should be diluted as an EO. But it could be diluted, because undiluted it's almost a waste. But not diluted like an EO 2 parts to 98 parts, IMO.

I use a serum from www.tvalskincare.com (http://www.tvalskincare.com) that has Sea Buckthorn oil in it. Apparently it is astringent and anti-inflammatory.

If you have an Eastern European/ Russian pharmacy (apteka) anywhere near you, that would be a good place to get it. It's a common herbal remedy/ suppliment and is far less expensive than in cosmetic stores or american sites.

It is spectacular on dry skin and other skin conditions. I had a spot on my hand that was dry and crusty, and after one application it was about 90% improved.

Oh, my bad :) I just meant that it should be diluted a bit, not to the same ratio. When I purchased my sea buckthorn it came with a warning that it was quite potent and shouldn't be used straight.

Really? The one I have doesn't say that but then it's meant to be taken with food like a supplement, though not to drink the whole thing but a tea spoon or tablespoon a day.
I've also had sea buckthorn juice and preserves which are very tasty.

Yep :) Mine came in liquid form in an amber bottle from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Don't forget, there are two types of sea buckthorn oil: from berries and from seeds. The seed one is the expensive one and is used topical. I think it is supposed to be great for healing cuts. I think the orange oil is from seeds and the red one is from berries, but I could be wrong, I only saw orange one before.
Ahh, now I have a craving for oblepiha berries and oplepiha jam drink.

Here is more information on ingestion from drugs.com, 2009.
"Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation because clinical trial data are lacking. (http://www.drugs.com/npp/sea-buckthorn.html)
One review article documents sea buckthorn's history of use as a food in Asia and in Europe. Research from toxicological studies using animal models suggests seed oil and oil from the fruit's soft parts are safe. These studies also examined acute and chronic toxicity of blood, liver, and heart as well as mutagenicity and teratogenicity of ingested oils." (http://www.drugs.com/npp/sea-buckthorn.html)

Just about any natural or herbal remedy will say that. Including almost all herbal teas. It is just that they haven't tested them yet. They can't give extensive testing to every single little thing you might use or eat.

I agree that Weleda is great. I have not tried this particular oil, but I have tried several other things from them, and they were very good. :)
