I was hoping the LHC ladies would have a good idea of where to find something like this: Vintage Finger Wave Clips (http://www.visualworlds.com/livejournalvm/clips.jpg), at least, I'm pretty sure that's close to what they're called. I was only able to locate them for sale in this one ebay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/8-Vintage-FLAPPER-Hair-Tru-Finger-Wave-Clips-Curlers_W0QQitemZ360141336506QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ 20090323?IMSfp=TL090323139009r38229)

I've already sent my sister on a mission to check out her local antique stores, but if anybody can give me a heads up on where to find them onine, I'd really appreciate it. :D

My grandmother had a drawer full of these (sorry they're all gone now).
She called them Marcel curlers or Marcel clips.
Maybe if you try looking with Marcel you'll find more? Also note that I don't know if I'm spelling it correctly, I only ever heard the word, I didn't see it written.

Haven't ever seen the wave clamps you specify, however, these are what my grandmother used to set fingerwaves.

I also saw her use two prong curl clamps to set the wave.

Instructions for wave formation with these tools are here.

Oooh, thanks for the help, Pointydog & MissTwist! Marcel clips, huh? That would explain why I've had so few hits on my searches. Hey, I have a Sally's near me (several, actually), I'll hit them up for those clips, MT.

Thanks! :)

My grandmother was the height of fashion in the late 20's and early 30's. Her hair was quite short and the marcel waves were oiled and worn close to the head.

I don't have a scanner, so her pictures are pictures and not in digital format, but I found one on Flickr that's pretty close:

Long hair would have to be marcelled at the top and the length pinned up to keep from pulling the waves flat. Could be done, I suppose.

It can be done with a comb and gelled hair, those clips are sadly so rare nowadays that you would probably be better off practicing the manual way in the time you'd be looking online for them. I suppose the hinges rusted so they got thrown out maybe?

With patience you can do it, just be firm and make sure you put the comb right into your scalp, not just over the top layer.

They are called Marcel waves also (well done pointydog), and there are tutorials for them, but I honestly can't think where. I don't have any saved. Try searching www.thefedoralounge.com, they have a great vintage hair & beauty section.
