Wow, mainstream media fails at color theory (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1165217/What-wear-youve-got-red-hair--Fergie-breaks-basic-fashion-rule.html).
According to them the "Most basic fashion rule is... that red and green should never be seen."
Just because it's not the most flattering dress in the world doesn't mean red hair and green clothes don't look great together- hell, half my wardrobe (the part that isn't black or brown) is green.
So, redheads: hennaed, natural, and dyed- post your smashing red and green pics! Hair toys and clothes included!
Here's a few that I have handy:

That's absurd! Most redheads I know look SMASHING in green. Many natural redheads have green eyes! Honestly, one more strike against the fashion/beauty "experts."

Says the people who want us to have super short over-processed hair, fake nails, and fake skin color. Green clothes or accessories with red hair is the best color combination!

I'm not a redhead now (but I have been in the past), but I've never heard that particular fashion rule before - I remember buying green stuff to GO with the red hair when I had it, lol. I do agree Fergie doesn't look so hot in the dress, but I don't think its the colour thats the problem.

I don't have red hair, but I have red "in" my hair. (Thank you undefinable smorgasbord of everything hair color!). It also looks more red in certain lights. I love wearing green clothes! I can wear almost every green except olive green next to my face - but I prefer either pastels or bright, clear greens (just bought a lime green shirt a few weeks back).
Never really thought about getting green hair toys, but now I will! Another contrasting color besides purple!
My sister is a natural redhead, and she looks even more striking in royal blue than she does in green - it really sets off the warmth of her hair. Just a thought!

I was always told redheads OUGHT to wear green as it looks best!
They're just trying to muddle things up (again).
I do admit that dress looks awful, but it's just the tone of the green is too bright for her.

HaHaHa!!!
Funny you should post this today!
I am wearing a delicious spring green 'column of color' --cowl neck to pants hem (that I designed and sewed) with a lovely belt of blues and greens--got a TON of compliments at work today. Looks so fresh and alive for spring.
Looks fabulous with strawberry blonde--henna/cassia'd hair and green clip in my twist up!
I do find I need a touch more blush when I wear green, however--to avoid the unhealthy 'green at the gills' look.

Ugh this makes me so annoyed. It really does.
A girl in my film class told me I 'don't match' as I have red hair and green eyes.
Now the media!? I'll never hear the end of this :(

Oi! Redheads are supposed to wear green. Now granted, certain shades are better than others and Fergie didn't pull off that dress well, but still...! Green, black, brown, and pumpkin orange are the best colors for me!

That is so funny! I think most redheads look amazing in green! Especially dark deep greens... these 'experts'' don't have a clue what they are saying!
Wavelength
March 27th, 2009, 01:34 PM
Yeah, this is another case of the "experts" being completely out of touch with reality.
And they fail at recalling aphorisms too. The saying is "BLUE and green should never be seen, Except inside a washing machine." That's when fashion dictated that blue and green clothing shouldn't be together in the same outfit. Obviously this was before blue jeans became so popular. It had nothing to do with hair colour!

I always thought it was "red and green should never be seen, except upon an Irish queen", but I always thoought that meant both red and green clothing, nothing to do with hair. Green looks great on redheads! And red and green clothing together - who cares? (Especially at Christmas!) But I always wondered if it had something to do with the old Irish Brehon law that set limits by social status on the number of colours people could wear .

Yes even in art we were told that they are called complimentary colors, because they are the exact opposite of each other.
Yep! Complementary! Spot on! Like in complementing each other in a terrific way. :D
Opposite colours bring out and enhance each other in the most fantastic and vivid way. A well known technique in art. And in make-up. Just look at all the advice for people with green eyes to enhance the greenness by using eye shadows in purple hues. :agree:
While I do whole-heartedly agree that this particular picture/outfit is not flattering Ms Ferguson much, :blueeek: this, of course, has nothing to do with the colour combination.
Fashion rules! Hrmpf! As silly as the sheep abiding by them.
Disclaimer time
It should be evident that I'm not much of a rule-lover, which sometimes shows in my comments. :o
It's not meant to bash people who like those rules. If you abide by (some) fashion rules because they work for you, that's a completely different matter!!
Mainly, it's the mindless following and parroting of rules, any rules, I'm against. It's the not-even-stopping-to-think-first to determine if a particular rule has any value.

Red and green are complementary colors. Like purple and yellow or blue and orange the combination is striking and appealing. I love all these photos of green hair toys in red hair. Makes me want to henna again. :)

My hair is as red as it gets (not naturally), and green is my favorite color! My son and I had a portrait done together, but I don't like to post his pics on the internet, so I'll not put it up here......I was wearing a sweater with a bright green and black geometric pattern, and my son was weraing a green and black rugby striped shirt (I wanted us to be color coordinated)....AND, the photographer said that with my hair, we could not have picked a better color than bright emerald green.....
OH, and I am wearing green in my siggy......HA!
I do agree however, that Fergie should not have worn that dress.....

Ohhhhhkayyyy . . . mebbe I'm ancient now, but remember the Color Me Beautiful fad of the late 80's - early 90's? Where the line "What's your season became a cliche at the department store?"
The palatte for Autumn (red to reddish hair, warm complexion) was pretty much every green in the book, from kelly to pine. Depending on the level of contrast between hair and skin, you might foray into aqua and seafoam.
Sheeple deserve to look washed out.

complementary (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/complementary) colour (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/colour)
(colour science) Either of two colours which, when mixed, produce a white (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/white) or grey (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/grey)
(art) A colour which is regarded as the opposite of another, so that the two colours together form a pleasing contrast.

I think it all depends on the color of the clothes and of the hair. I have dark red hair, and the shirt I think I look best in is a dark blood-red. On the other hand, I tend to think people with more carroty red hair don't look as good in red.

That's some crazy nonsense. I bet some poor journalist was given that picture and told to write something about it, and that's what s/he came up with. I agree the cut of the dress is horrid on her, but the color? Not the best shade of green, but not terrible either. I'm so sick of this idea that with red hair you, you can only wear certain colors. The lady at the makeup counter for MAC nearly refused to sell me eyeliner other than brown. According to color theory, red and green COMPLIMENT each other! The dress Fergie is wearing isn't flattering, but that isn't because it's a green dress with red hair. That's more because it isn't her SHADE of green (although that particular shade of green doesn't look good on most people) and it isn't a flattering design. Skin tone and makeup have just as much to do with the color clash as hair color.

I read almost all the pages, and I'm not a redhead, but I want to make two points
I've heard the red and green warning before as an artist. I was warned, not because they didn't look good together, but because if you used the colors straight out of the bottle, it would imply xmas every time. But if you alter one or both colors from "normal" (being cadmium red and pthalocyanine green), then you can get a similar pleasing contrast without screaming xmas.
Red hair is never cadmium red...except Ronald's. So enjoy, and look gorgeous in green!

I've always thought that a red head "should" wear green...
To some extent I believe that if a red head looks good in green, it's because her/his eyes often match. I read in a book from around 1955, that hair colour is not the only marker, not even the best marker of what one "should" and "should not" wear, the colour of the eyes are most important.
My hair is reddish/gold, and enhanced with henna glosses, but I look awful in green, but my blue eyes and my hair looks great when I wear blue, and a colour I like to call "antique rose" (even though I've heard all my life that "red and pink can't be worn at the same time" it looks very nice)
But mostly I think that if somebody likes to wear green, and feel good about it, that will show and they look great. We all look our best when we wear colours we're comfortable with. That is my belief :D

I thought that most natural redheads have green eyes anyway?
It is just the British media looking for another excuse to knock poor Fergie. You would think they would leave her alone now she's out of the spotlight, but no!
Wonder if the person who wrote it was some paragon of pulchritude? Doubt it, some bitter old hack most likely
I think it is a good colour on her. Maybe my eyes are wonky  It's the cut of the dress that doesn't do her any favours.
I am enjoying the comments at the foot of the article. Are any of them by LHC-ers, perchance?

My hair is brownish, but it has always had hints of red. Green is probably my best color, green and coral orange shades. True reds and blacks look horrible on me, but shades of pink, coral and green are the best. My eyes are blueish green and I think they have gotten greener with age.
I think I read somewhere or heard that mixing brown clothing or accessories with black is a fashion faux pas. So, people with black hair can't wear brown, and vice versa?
I've always had problems with this little rule, because my absolute favorite belt is brown but my favorite boots are black. Last time I just wore a longer shirt to cover my belt so I could still wear my favorite shoes. Shhhh!

I agree that many people with blue or green eyes look good wearing an eye matching colour, as it brings out the colour of their eyes.
However, I have brown eyes and I look really, truly, awfully horrible in any shade of brown. There is just no such thing as a "good" or "nice" brown for me. It just kills my skin tone.
Which is slightly weird, actually, as I used to have not only brown eyes, but brown hair too and it looked fine with my skin tone.

Oh well, there is nothing that is "true" for everybody. :D
There are no rules without exceptions et cetera, but when it comes to fashion and colours and all that, there are so many "exceptions" that the rules not really deserve to be seen as more than hints, or vague universal advices...

If red and green together is a No-No, then I'm just a big No-No myself; half my wardrobe is in different shades of green. And I don't really care if somebody says that red and green shouldn't be mixed together, 'cause I love the combination (as you can see in my avatar) and I care more about making me happy than pleasing strangers :)

I think you have to consider the source of the comments....The British Tabloids are all about controversy and drawing either positive or NEGATIVE attention to their intended targets. It seems to me that Fergie is more her own woman, doing her own thing; not "fitting in the mold" of how a royal is "supposed" to conduct one's self-according to Britsh tabloid press. Another thing- she is a woman with.... "GINGER hair!...............

Well, my wife is a redhead and her wardrobe is full of different shades of green.
What I have heard said by more sane people is that redheads come in two flavours, autumn redheads (brown, green or hazel eyes) or the rarer spring redheads (blue or grey eyes). While both can wear green the range of greens which work well for spring redheads is smaller because of the effect of the eye colour.
But it's like all of these things, clear rules are impossible because there are soooooo many other factors. For example, personally I've always found blue and green a generally unpleasing combination - but in some circumstances and with some blues and greens it looks great.
Redheads and green should always be seen. Redheads in purple however is a different story
Redheads and bright scarlet is an, err, challenging combination at times too

One thing that deserves to be remembered when it comes to colour combinations, is that much of it is not so much about the colour itself, but finding the right hues, nuances. This can make a lot of difference.
But the main difference has nothing to do with the colours themselves, but the personality of the person wearing them. Attitude is everything!
I know, I've often seen people wearing colour combos which I personally did not find to be.. eh.. optimal. But great goodness, can some people make them work!! Wow!

Sheesh. First it started in summer camp when I was seven- a little red-haired girl was advised by another camper not to wear pink because it clashed with her red hair. Then, many years ago when I dyed my hair red temporarily, an shop clerk told me not to wear red, and a makeup counter woman said no purple. Now they're talking about green. Personally, green is my favorite with red.

For purple, it depends. I can't wear anything blueish, needs to be more reddish purple. Just plain white looks also good, anything slightly off-white makes me look sick. (example siggy pic.) most of my clothes are either turquoise, purple or black with some wine , brown and blues thrown in plus a couple of nice pink shirts. but it is true, fuschia does not look good on me. and neither does bright red, i look better in more jewel like colors, like sapphire, gold, but the best color i've seen and been complimented on is Emerald green. stupid to follow one person's crazy advise. not to mention that red hair and green clothes stop traffic. (maybe that's why this person said green and red are a no-no? because she watched a beautiful red haired woman cause a car accident while wearing green clothes? )

Interesting. I really don't look very good in red (though I'll wear it anyway from time to time), though burgundy works fairly well for me. All blues are horrible near my face, and plain white (I'm thinking of when I tried on wedding gowns) makes me look dead. Ivory and champagne tones worked much better, though I generally prefer stronger, darker colors. Pastels and lighter "autumn" colors like oatmeal and camel aren't much good.

Ok - well poor Fergie has on a terrible dress and the green is certainly the wrong "color" of green for her hair and skintone...
However, anybody can wear green - you just have to find the right shade for you - as with any color. :D

Redheads in purple can definitely work, although the purples need to be more along the darker end of the spectrum. Think jewel tones, like deep amethyst. Not pastels!
I agree! Most purples don't get along well with me, though I do have one deep plum top that I like.

Very good point!

Wait a minute!! I have green eyes and I love to wear green for that reason. It makes my eyes stand out even more.
Do any of you redheads wear pink or red?
My mom always told me redheads shouldn't wear pink. I don't wear pink very often and it has to be a particular shade, deep cool rose, no yellow undertones. I guess the no pink rule is very old school. Not calling my mom old or anything.;)

When I henna'd (before indigo) my hair it did show quite orange-red in the sun and I did ban pink and red from the wardrobe. Purple too, now that I think about it.

from being in the fashion industry, I would say that its more the particular shade of green against her skin, not so much her hair. The media are a bunch of idiots.
red hair and the PROPER shade of green look fab- there's no denying that.
But that color on fergie looks, well, :puke:

I own an old fashioned book about style which is often spot-on (for German readers: it's the famous Lilo Aureden book from the 50's, with very pretty illustrations). The recommendation for redheads: wear green and purple! Check gray and blue, it depends on your coloring. And forget pink.
I think it really depends on the individual. My wardrobe is mainly green, purple and gray - and lots of black. My complexion is neutral and I can wear both warm and cool tones. I'm more pale-pinkish in winter but when I tan a bit, my colors warm up. And I think I can pull off both cold and warm hues (or look equally horrible in all of them ;-) ).
So while there are many colors that might or might not flatter a reddish- or redhead, I think Green is the one color everybody agrees - it's simply the most stunning color for redheads.
Fergie's dress is weird, maybe the flash played a trick on her. A darker, muted green would look very well on her.

Frankly, I balk at taking fashion advice from these 'style mavens'. Aren't these the same rockstars who think that everyone no matter their figure type *must* wear the 'in' hemline? That we all need super freaky dayglo white teeth? And that to look 'my' best takes several hundred dollars in products (at minimum?) so people admire my makeup but not *me*?
I'm still irritated by an article I read in a fitness magazine yesterday about styling long hair. Apparently to do a ponytail, you now need a flatiron, hairspray and backcombing. I do not listen to these morons.
So, as a boring brunette, I guess I'm not supposed to wear, what? Yellow? I'm there.
Loving the red hair green clothes, ladies!

I think it's because red hair is often 'looked down upon' - so anything that looks gorgeous on redheads, that might bring out the red more, is a terrible, horrible, awful thing.
Which is why I ignore 'beauty' experts pretty much entirely.

Oh, it's THAT Fergie! I thought they were talking about Stacy Ferguson from the Black Eyed Peas. I hadn't clicked on the link till now. Hrm... Yeah, she'd look fine in green, but that dress looks like she tore something off the rack and threw it on last minute. I think a slightly more muted green that was more shapley and calf-length would look better on her, along with a glamorous up-do and softened makeup.

Well, I think that the colors that look best (or worst for that matter) on a person depend much more on skin color than hair color. Some colors (pastels and some mustard type colors) make me look dead. In fact, my husband calls them "death colors!" And, in other countries people don't have the red and green clash rule--in Japan for example they go together, and not just at Christmas
My grandmother had silver hair and grey eyes--wow! And I think that black and brown look nice together. Don't these fashion police have anything better to do? Clearly not.
People also say that blondes look good in blue. Well, I really don't. I can wear some blues, but many just make my skin look red and blotchy. Yuck. Purples can be problematic as well, but I wear pink and red, even with a henna gloss (my hair is naturally blonde with strawberry highlights). White is also a color that doesn't look great on me. Go figure. Green, on the other hand, has always been a great color on me! Even my glasses are green--though you can't see them in this pic.
Here's me in green:

Interesting. I am always complimented when I wear a simple and plain kelly green polo shirt to work. There are a few shades of green that work against my pale skin and red hair which would be any green with yellow tones in it. I feel like it makes me look ill. Pastel green also works against me.
Forest green is also one of my favorites that I enjoy wearing in the winter. I can not count how many times people have asked me if I was Irish when wearing green and it makes me giggle.

You don't match?
What the heck!? Is she insinuating that you ought to have red eyes to match your red hair? Or is it green hair to match your green eyes?
Absolutely stupid comment. Any time I see someone with red hair and green eyes, I think to myself "A rare treasure", the rarest of combinations.

I like this article -
http://www.greatestlook.com/advice/redheads.html
For red hair and green clothing it says:
Make them green with envy
It seems that there is at least one complementing shade of green for about every shade of red hair. Green is very versatile and looks good on almost any redhead - the lighter the shade of your hair, the lighter the green you should go for. Warmer greens suit warmer omplexions.

My sister owns a beautiful blouse with green and purple and I frequently steal it!
I think I look best in certain dark shades of green, blood red, black and purple. A greenish looking turquise is nice too. I can't get away with pastels, too pinkish tones or this toxic looking shade of green, I look sick in them.
And the combo if red hair and green clothing is the best one there is! Unfortunately the fashion industry in Germany doesn't agree with me and only ever produces strange shades that don't suit me at all. My sister has golden hair and wears green almost daily, I think that too makes a Christmas-y combo!

I always get compliments when I wear green and it became my most favourite colour to wear for a while there. Olive green is one of my go-to colors, it always looks good on me. The problem with the dress is the harsh lime shade, the fact that it's shapeless and busy, and wrinkled into the bargain. The fact that it's a green dress is not even the real problem. It would look just sas bad if it were maroon, because of the shapeless/rumpled factor. Poor Fergie, some idiot with a camera obviously ambushed her after a long car ride.

I have come to a conclusion... Anybody who thinks red hair and green clothes doesn't usually work together (not much goes with bright lime, haha), has obviously never seen photos of the actress Christina Hendricks (http://theryancokeexperience.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/christina-hendricks.jpg). I can understand not seeing some of the lovely redheads-in-green on the forums, but sheesh. She's on the red-carpet all the time. You'd think the same people who grumble about celebrities wearing the 'wrong' colors, would pay attention when somebody looks that stunning, right?

As a redhead myself, I love wearing green. It complements my hair and skin tone, so I don't know why I shouldn't wear it.. but then again, I also wear a lot of black which is apparently also a no no for redheads. Ah well, as long as I'm happy with it.

Meph: I've seen plenty of redheads that look stunning in black. I think it has more to do with A) the shade of black, B) the particulars of your skintone, and *most importantly* C) the confidence with which you wear it!
Supposedly, with my coloring (neutral to cool, pale skin with dark hair) I ought to look horrible in cream and pale tea-stained type colors, but those are really flattering. *shrugs*

Hey I'm a redhead and I thin I look hot in green. Green always brings out the color in my hair

Wow, gorgeous :applause picture Rose Red!
I am a woman who wears lots of black (always have since I was thirteen) but when I wear colours I usually pick colours that are opposites; my favourite combination is turquoise with red or green with red. I even have that combination in my house a lot. I just adore opposite colours, because they enhance eachother so well.
Never listen to socalled experts, because life wouldn't be so much :) fun if you would follow rules made by others.

I find that my hair is set off very nicely with navy blue and white, not so much with green. With that said, yesterday, a friend of mine gave me belated birthday presents that included a set of green hair clips :D I was so excited that the minute I got home I put them in. I'll have to take some pics later ^_^
