Graduation hair?

Hi gang! I'm graduating on Friday (yay!) and want to pick your brains. What on earth does a long-ish hair do with those silly hats?
The standard for "normal" graduands seems to be straightened, highlighted, layered, possibly extended, but definitely OUT and therefore full of product and process.
Should I just do my best and leave it out, fluffy and untrimmed as it is? Is it just NOT DONE to have a bun or braid, or does it make the funny hat look funnier?
Any experiences/observations?

How long is your hair? If it's long to the point that you might sit on it or something, you probably want to pull it back somehow. If not, you can probably just leave it down naturally because it is a special occasion. Put it behind your shoulders, in my opinion.

Otherwise, I think a braid would look nice, perhaps a braid pulled in front of one shoulder.

I have no idea what is traditionally done.

I feel that I can now tentatively say BSL. So only longish.
Anyone had to wear one of these trencher/mortarboard things? What's the go?

Here's what I did for my high school graduation when I had BSL ish hair:

I think I did use a curling iron for that, but I figured once probably wouldn't be tragic. Also, you could probably do something similar with rollers.

For college I just bunned my waist length hair lower than the hat.

If I were you, I would wear it in a braid with a pretty hairtie (I have one that's metal-free with an rose on it).

In my experience, with hair as thick as ours with the hat-thingy, it tends to pouf out under the part that covers your head if it's not pulled back. I hope that makes sense. If that doesn't bother you, you could wear it down.

I don't think a bun would work, because the hat-thingies I wore for my high school and college graduation came down rather far in the back, and because of the thickness of my hair, I wouldn't have had room to put a bun underneath it.

I agree that it should be special^^ and congratulations btw!! :joy::D
You can find all sorts of updos on the internet, so I won't go further into that but I can tell you what I wore at my graduation if you're interested..

This was pretty much it.. I wore it down in a half-up (you're got special right there :wink: I never do that)
And made 4 braids (only two of them are visible here, btw), 2 on each side (I left a bit of hair hanging in the front so you couldn't see where I started the braid) and crossed them on the back of my head.. after that took some hair underneath the braids and twisted it upwards into a coil before securing it on the back with lots of bobby pins.. to create some volume on either side of the head..
The good thing about this 'do is that you can make the braids as low as you like.. I just chose high starting points :)

ETA: but then again - if you're wearing a big hat, this updo may not be possible to wear.. sry... I hadn't thought about that! We wear "cap"-like hats for graduation here..

I wish I had the pic handy (in my damn photobucket account that I can't get to at the moment, thanks, work :P), but when my sister graduated college I did the Victorian Updo on her.

We just got her a nice fancy barrette and it sat just below the back of her hat. She got so many compliments on it, and it's so easy to do :)

I had just planned on leaving mine down and natural at my graduation this May. At my high school graduation I had just chopped all my hair off into a pixie, and I vowed that I'd have beautiful long hair at my college one. ;)

You've already gotten some beautiful ideas, but I wanted to go ahead and show you how I wore mine when I graduated about 8 years ago. It was really short, but you can get an idea of what it looks like almost completely down and under a cap.

I wore a headband under it, as you can see in the other pic - it was taken the same day, at lunch before I put on the cap & gown.
