Obama asked astronaut Sandra Magnus, who has been aboard the space station since November, if it was difficult to maintain her long hair in space.

"Were you tempted to cut your hair shorter?" Obama asked Magnus, who will return to Earth with Discovery's crew later this week. "I think it's a real fashion statement."

"Quite frankly, on me (shorter hair) wouldn't look so nice, so I kept it long," Magnus said, referring to her curly brown locks that hovered in the air in the weightlessness of space.

I'm pretty sure he means the long hair is a fashion statement. Let me go find a pix of Sandra Magnus....

Her hair didn't seem that long in the pic?

Awesome. That could be a new comeback: "Obama says long hair is a fashion statement, and you can't really argue with the commander in chief."

What?! Her hair isn't long. Maybe it's longer now that it was in that photo.

Wow... I guess that's long for an astronaut?

Maybe it's longer now?

If that is long enough to be a fashion statement....we must make a reaaaaallly big statement!

See?!! (1) .... "long" is a relative term.
(2) at least it was something positive about long hair -- and in the media.

Yet another good excuse to grow hair. I'm patriotic. :D

Obama mentioned the space station was orbiting Earth at over 17,000 mph, "so we are glad that you are using the hands-free phone."

Station commander Mike Fincke told Obama that the space station does a lap around Earth every 90 minutes, and that inhabitants get to see 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours.

Woah. That's a sunrise and sunset every 1.5 hours right??? Holy cow. I wonder if hair grows faster in outer space? lol

Remember, curly girls don't always show the length so easily!

Yep! Everything is relative. Compared to her crew cut colleagues, I'm sure her hair looks very long!
It sure does look impressive all fanned out like that in space. :agree:

Btw, this of course not only means that your President has given long hair the Golden Stamp of Approval. It also means that anything longer than chin length is Officially Long! :happydance:

I noticed that too! I was impressed. It was floating around during the conference.

Astronaut Karen Nyberg's hair (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/11/the_international_space_statio.html#photo26) (picture number 26 in this series) looked very awesome, too. Plus, the view outside the window is just stunning!

I love you ladies! :D I'm not American, but that's a fantastic excuse, anyway (as if we needed one! :p)

That looks beautiful! It must feel so strange to have that huge, weightless mass of hair floating behind you. The tangles might get bad... but that would be a small price to pay for a view like that! :D

That doesn't seem that long. I agree if that's a statemnt then the hair found in this community must make a really big statement. lol

That picture is amazing...but honestly, I don't think I'd want my hair to literally be weightless...bad enough all light and floaty in gravity! ...good thing I'm not an astronaut, huh?

Imagine all the new and unusual places to get your hair caught when it doesn't have to answer to gravity! :p

Her hair may not be LHC long but it is long hair for a woman in that profession. Many past female astronauts have had quite short hair. The fact that she is allowing it to flow free is very cool. She might have tied it back for the interview but instead let it float free, I really like that. I also like the President's comments. Positive feedback for long hair. :D

Eeek! I went and looked for a photo of her (that you Google images...) and it isn't very long at all! (I mean, I was expecting it to be waist length, when I read the article)

Well, that definitely proves "long" is a relative term in the real world. I'm just happy that we got some GOOD media coverage for once. :D :D :D

re: Karen Nyberg's hair
That hair looks long. Not LHC long, but definitely non-LHC long. Imagine what could happen if you lost a hairstick in zero-gravity! Looking at that picture, did you see how the necklace is sort of floating, too?

I was imagining it too. That would have been something to remember. Thank God for gravitational force.

Karen's space pic is beautiful!

What an interesting thread! It never occurred to me what the effect of no gravity would be on hair!!

Yes, thank you for that photo, it's stunning! Karen Nyberg's hair is lovely, too. But I can't help wondering what would happen if it got tangled up in all those wires and things.... :hmm: hehe.

Wow, she has nice hair! I think it's really cool that she keeps it like that, even with her job being as such (perhaps not most conducive for long hair; can we say helmet hair?).

Now I want to be an astronaut. Just because I'm vain and want to educate the public about all the beautiful updos around. Unrealistic, I know.
