Hair Extensions: an interesting article

I had heard about this before. It makes me more than a little uncomfortable to think of religious pilgrims sacrificing their hair to their God without knowledge of the international hair selling trade their hair would be sold off to. They might still choose to give it. But they really ought to be able to make an informed decision.

It is a shame that this goes on. They must miss their hair, and there it is being treated like just another commodity. :confused:

Yes - i am so, so glad that I do not feel the need to do this.

And I cannot imagine not asking, "and what will happen to this hair?"

Think of how many people could be helped with all that money! Part of the money to the temple, part to charities. Sounds fair.

What gets to me in this kind of articles is that they see western hair inferior compared to indian hair...Yes, their hair is super long and soft and shiny but i think it's mostly because they do not style or dye their hair.

Actually, none of the extensions i've seen (plus, i own 8 piece virgin clip-in hair extensions) has super thick strands which endures great deal of damage. In fact, they're quite fragile and kinda "flat"; which is why i cannot wear my extensions (they look so stupid against my monsterous super thick dense hair.)

I think virgin, well-cared for hair would be superior to hair that is processed and heat damaged, whether it's Western or not. :p

I wonder about preparing that hair for extensions - hair that deep inky black must have to have the **** bleached out of it. That is such a shame.

Well, not everyone has jet-black hair ;) people who bleaches their hair needs extensions so most of these has to be bleached as well.

I'm an exception for that rule though, my extensions are %100 virgin dark brown. Although my hair is a tad bit lighter, I intend to keep them that way, as a sign of respect to long hair :cool:

Interesting article. I haven't decided how I feel about it yet.

But of course, in the comments there are several people comparing this to Locks of Love and how superior LoL donors are, because they give their hair to "kids with cancer" and not celebrities. :justy:

Ew, I find the idea of real hair extensions creepy too. I mean, if you wanted long nails you wouldn't get someone elses old ones glued on, would you? :disgust:

My understanding was that virgin European hair has the highest value because it most closely resembles the texture of the average woman wanting the extensions. I've had a couple of sets of clip-in extension and one set, the hair was so thick and coarse it really stood out from my baby fine hair.

Since the hair shaving is part of temple ritual that people are willingly partaking in, I don't feel the temple is wrong to sell the hair. It would be worse if they just threw it away or burned it. Still, it'd be nice if the donors were informed. Knowing how much the money would help individual families, the donors could sell the majority of their hair (in a pony tail) and then still shave their head for temple ritual. Imagine earning a year's salary by doing something your were going to do anyway.

:puke: That is such a gross thought. lol As a nail tech I would be disgusted if someone brought in someone else's old nails and asked for them to be glued on. I'd be like, "Um...no. Here, how about gels?" :D

I don't agree because dyed color hardly ever matches natural color. Extensions will have to be bleached even if there's a slight difference.
