View Full Version : Fighting bad apartment water- what to do?

Whenever I go down to my parents house my hair is the way its "supposed" to be- lovely waves and some spirals, fluffy, not too much buildup.

I'm pretty sure my apartment complex softens the water, but I HATE what it does to my hair. My ends are dry and knotty no matter what or how much conditioner I use, my hair is sort of flat and straw-like, and my scalp produces tons more grease.

I use the same shampoos/conditioners at both places. My hair was also happier at the hotels when I travel.

I have my doubts about the county water quality to start with (we're in a farming area, I'm looking at the charts and we are have some nitrates and such) and then they throw this softening crud in it.
I oil the ends of my hair a few times a week. I use Suave naturals conditioner.

Here is what I have thought of doing in addition:

ACV rinse
Rinse with distilled water
Rinse with filtered water from my Brita pitcher

Not washing every isn't really an option due to my greasy hair.

Any thoughts? Anyone else have weird water?

I don't know. I had softened water for a week when I traveled once, and it made me break out and my hair a mess. I then took a week traveling somewhere else the week following, the water was nice and hard (like I like it. well maybe it's just not softened, but I call it hard). and it was great. The two weeks after that, I traveled somewhere else, with SUPER softened water. I felt like I kept the soap on me the entire two weeks. But I used a new S and C, L'oreal Ultrapure. I CWC'd the whole time and my hair was fine. My body suffered though. I tried CO one night and it was horrible. So I just found I had to use some shampoo on the trip. Once I got home, life is good and hair is happy with just CO.

I can't really tell you, because I HATED it.

It made you break out too? Hmm... that might be another one of my problems... my acne was so bad my doctor brought in a skin specialist for me to talk to for a few minutes, I was just down there for an exam last week but she was really concerned over my acne.

I use the Brita filter for drinking/cooking water because the tap water tastes like SOAP. Ugh!

I'm pretty sure my parent's place has hard water, and like I said, no problems there.

Well, I haven't broken out anywhere but my face in years. My back broke out something horrible. I thought it was the soap, because I used hotel soap the first shower, but I don't think it was. Since I switched to "my" soap the next day, I think it was the water. Also, I continued to break out when I was gone the two weeks to the place with softened water. It even tasted nasty. You couldn't order water at a resturant or anything, unless you bought bottled. Which interestingly enough, caused me to taste the best water I ever tasted. And at $5 a bottle, it had better be good water! (ah, traveling on the company, nice.)
