Yes, the Aussie Miracle Moist Conditioner is 'cone free - in UK only.

Oh, by the same token the Aussie Mega you have listed does have 'cones - here in the UK. Why can't they agree on universal formula's!!

JASON Biotin and JASON Lavender Conditioner have cones. Well mine do anyway. I know somtimes products that are sold in the US have different ingredients to those sold in Australia and NZ but I think I've seen on other hair forums that JASON conditioners have cones so it doesn't sound like it's just downunder this time.

Also the Pears line of products (available in Australia, supermarkets and Priceline).

Great list! Thanks for compiling it. Off to rate this thread!

Can you CO with a cone conditioner?

That particular conditioner isn't a cone.I would explain what is a cone or noncone when looking at the ingrediants, but truefully-I'm still learning myself :) .

Some people do CO with cones,it all depends on your own hair.Try it with a noncone for the first C and for the second C,use a cone conditioner. That's just a suggestion.

I don't understand. What do you mean, the second C? Should you not use the same conditioner every time you CO? Or do you mean using two conditioners when you CO? I just slathered it on, scrubbed in, and covered in a cap for a while before rinsing. Am I not doing it right?

Patrycja
April 3rd, 2008, 11:51 AM
There are several different ways on doing a CO.The only one I have ever done is a lighter weight C left on for 20-30 minutes, covered with a shower cap or baggie.Scrub and rinse. Then,a heavier C for the finish.Don't leave that on for nearly as long as the first C.Again-this is the way I do it.I also oil when drying.

amaiaisabella
April 3rd, 2008, 11:54 AM
Oh I see. Thank you for the explanation. The second conditioner, do you just put it in and rinse out quickly as in the traditional usage?

I am concerned it would weigh down my fine hair though. I just did one round of conditioner last night and it's pretty soft, though I did put jojoba oil on it after.

April 3rd, 2008, 12:03 PM
I just use one conditioner. If using one works for you then I wouldn't worry about it!

amaiaisabella
April 3rd, 2008, 12:07 PM
Delenn do you just do one round, or after the big rinse do you do a second quick application? I was able to find the original article on CO and it doesn't mention a second round, just putting it in for a long time and then rinse.

Ooh thank you for the list!

Could somebody please pick out a few from the list that are protein-free and possibly even available in canada? =)

I use africa's best botanical conditioner (yay wal-mart!), which I THINK is cone free... I can't find anything ending in -cone, but I'm also too lazy to hunt down the cones with the different endings. It also definitely doesn't leave any sort of siliconey effect on my hair.. and it smells like fresh green apples.

Most Klorane (french natural hair care line) products don't have silicone. I haven't checked all their products, but the ones I've seen don't have silicones. Also, most shampoos have sodium laureth sulfate, a milder detergent.

Edit to add: some of their detanglers DO have cones, others don't.

Has Suave Milk and Honey been discontinued?

Good question.I love that smell and it seems to me that they replaced it with the Toasted Sugar and Vanilla when they created that scent.I haven't seen Milk and Honey out for quite sometime.I could just be missing it in all the stores I haunt looking for conditioners....

Let me know if you find it.Even online,I'll pay the shipping costs.I love that smell that much...:cloud9:

ETA-the Sauve conditioner listed as Lavender,is that the same one as Lavender and Liliac? I haven't seen a just laverder around here.

I went to walmart, walgreens, and HEB looking for the stuff. Didn't find it anywhere :(
Sucks, because I really wanted to try it. I have some milk and honey hand soap that smells divine, so I'd love to have that scent for my hair.

I swear I saw the milk & honey suave at target a few weeks ago. Around here they only stock four or five of the suave and v05 ones in target and walmart. I've had better luck at CVS and random grocery stores for the more "exotic" suave stuff. Dollar stores have also had a surprisingly good selection of the suave/v05 cheapies, maybe the milk & honey is hiding there. I'm finding it harder to find all the scents in one place since they changed the bottles.

Alberto Balsam Sun Kissed Raspberry conditioner with cones?
I got this conditioner in Boots (UK & Ireland chain of health & beauty shops). Some of ingredients:
cyclomethicone, dimethylamine, methylisothiazolinone....
I think European hair products differ a lot from American products... Such a pity, it makes all the cooperation harder ;(

I'd believe it. I just noticed today that JASON Vitamin E with A & C Conditioner does have cones.
I feel sorta stupid, because I bought it purely to try a "good quality" no-cone conditioner, and I obviously didn't read the label properly beforehand - Dimethicone appears toward the bottom of a long list  It also cost me 8.50 euro...

Personally, I haven't been very impressed with it. My hair is really unshiny after using it... just looks dull. I was rationalising this, telling myself "this must be how hair looks when it's getting healthy! The dull transition stage!"
Bah!! I'm going straight back to Original Source!

For Dutchies:

Wonderwel is a -conefree, SLS-free conditioner brand that's only available in the Netherlands. Could you add this one to your list? It's taken me ages to find a -conefree conditioner here so I'm willing to spare other Dutchies the time. Thanks!

Here's (http://healthycurls.awardspace.com/cones.html) a link with a list of cones (scroll down a bit)- I think it's missing a few, but it's a start. The ones that don't end in "cone" usually end in "conol" or "xane".

Freeman Seakelp Moisture Conditioner
The ingredients are:
Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Macrocystis Pyrifera Extract (Sea Kelp), Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil (Macadamia Nut), Panthenol, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Stearalkonium Chloride, Stearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, PEG 75 Lanolin, DMDM Hydantoin, Propylene Glycol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Limonene, Linalool, Fragrance (Parfum)

* This is cone free to the best of my knowledge.

I just did a search for this Freeman Sea Kelp Moisture Conditioner and I'm so confused because I bought this today and mine has slightly different ingredients. I'm guessing they reformulated it because it says "NEW" on it. It still says "Sea Kelp Ultra Nourishing Moisture Conditioner" but the ingredients differ from what is shown on drugstore.com and what you posted above. They took out the Macadamia Nut Oil and put in Guava Fruit Extract and Honeysuckle. Here is what is on my bottle (still no cones!):

Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol, Macrocystis Pyrifera Extract (Sea Kelp), Psidium Guajava (Guava Fruit Extract), Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle), Panthenol, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Stearalkonium Chloride, Stearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, PEG 75 Lanolin, DMDM Hydantoin, Propylene Glycol, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Limonene, Linalool, Fragrance (Parfum)

Alaffia is cone free as far as I know. Herbal Infusion of Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis), Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii), African Wild Honey, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Hydrolyzed Oat Protein, Potassium Sorbate, Essential Oils of Sweet Orange and Ylang Ylang, Limonene (from essential oil), Citric Acid Those are the ingredients for the Shea and Honey conditioner.

I'm really cheap so I hate to admit this but all of the conditioners from Natures Gate seem to be superior to the V05 conditioners. All conefree, but boy does the Natures Gate give have volume and condition. I really wanted the 1.19 one to be better than the 7.79 one but no such luck.

Oh, I still use them all though. I just notice that when I use Nature's Gate there is a positive difference.

I agree about the Nature's Gate. My whole foods had it on sale for about $3 once, and I got a bottle. It was nice, but the fragrance bothered me a lot.(I'm extremely sensitive to artificial fragrances) It did smell nice and was fairly subtle, just I have reactions to most artificial fragrances.

Another thing for the list, I found this locally:

Sonoma Soap Company (First Crush conditioner):

"FIRST CRUSH – Savor the 100% natural aroma of freshly crushed certified organic grape seed, red raspberry and green apple extracts.

Ingredients: Water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sorbitol, Triticum, Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Tocopherol (Vit. E), Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract, Panthenyl Triacetate, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Bisabolol, Panthenol, Citric Acid, Honey Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, NaturalAroma Blend™"

So it does apparently have a sulfate, but no cones.

LUSH's Jungle conditioner doesn't have cones, but it does have SLS for those who wish to avoid it. None of their hair conditioners (or shampoos, I think) have cones, but most, if not all, do have SLS. Jungle is the best of the conditioners, IMO :)

Oh! Heh, maybe I should have posted here instead of making a thread. Ulta has a cone-free conditioner, as well.
It's called Ultimate Volume Conditioner. It does have panthenol, but it's cone free, so... maybe it should be added to the list?
Here's (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=30821) my post on it. (Haven't tried it myself, though).

Merseaone, cone is short for Silicone and also shorthand for all the lotsa different types of sillicones out there- like Amodimethicone, Dimethicone, Cyclopenthasiloxane, etc.

There's a really great tLHC article all about cones that has a great reference list of them at the end- and which cones are water soluble or not. I find it very handy! Lemme get it for you...

LOL I've bookmarked it for the reference list at the bottom, I use it to quickly double check ingredients on new products I'm interested in- since I can never remember which cones are water soluble or not. Names are too bloody long to memorize!

I'm currently just using the unscented kind, and I can say it's more moisturizing than the cirtus, but not as much as my Alaffia. It's decent though, esp on my newly (less dry!) hair.

I know it sounds stupid but I am so confused, the more I learn about the more I freak out... can someone explain in plain language which is the less worse? and why? Depends on your hair "type". Cones can build up and lead to a greasy look over time, but also provide protection to many people's hair. SLS is drying. Try diluting it. Protein is good if you have damaged hair, but can make hair feel dry otherwise. Try SLS if it's what you have, with a cone free conditioner. If your hair needs the cones for protection, then use SLS occasionally, with Castile soap as your regular shampoo(or another mild cleasner). If your hair does not, either use SLS diluted, or a gentler cleanser.

I have tried searching this forum in hope of finding some thread or article that talks about sulfates and cones and explain them in plain language, but aside from some comments and the sulfate free shampoo list didn`t find much. I know there must be something around here, but this forum is so huge I get lost...
I want to ask a veteran... can someone please direct me towards a more extensive debate on the theme? Various threads that can perhaps provide more information? I do not have the patience and time to read every single post, but I would rather read information from here rather than wiki it... because of your own knowledge and experience.
so... where can I find information on sls? names, other names it goes under? more talk on it, as that article was so poor, it left me hanging... same goes for cones, protein and other stuff I am not aware of?

Thank you

I would like to report that the Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shiny conditioner that I bought most recently (last week) no longer has cones. I kept looking, they aren't there anymore! I know that it use to. According to the reviews, there have been issues with this conditioner.

It is actually working really well for my hair, and perhaps this is because of the hard water environment I'm in. (?) Maybe next time I'll try the 3-oil, but right now, this is just what I needed. And I've noticed a difference between the results I get now and the results I use to get. Use to be, it would end up dry, tangle-y, and crunchy as cones usually end up doing to me. (I have always loved the shampoo, which is why I even bothered with another look.)

Just passing the info on. :o

Hi,

I just started doing CO washes (so far w/ Very good results). First, THANK YOU for making this list! This has been very helpful, and I've been reading LOTS of labels, too!

I picked up some Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut (its on the list) but am dubious about the following ingredients in the ingredient list. Someone a page back mentioned it, but the answer wasn't definitive. The ingredients do end in -one, but not 'cone, so I'm confused:

Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone

Those two are in the middle of the ingredient list. My guess is that they are very similar (one has a chloro- group inserted into it) so that they don't appear sooner in the list (if the manufacturer used only one compound in greater quantity, it would be higher in the ingredient list).

These look like 'cones to me, but this is one of the most-used CO conditioners. Your thoughts?

Also, I picked up some

Bio-Infusion Professional Rosemary Mint Conditioner.
They were on sale @ Walgreens this week, buy one, get one free = 2 for $8, still not cheap, but I've loved all their products so far, and will probably use their shampoo on occasion if I get buildup from CO washing.

Anyhow, here's the ingredient list. It looks Cone-Free to me, but I'm pretty new to this, so if someone could double-check, I'd appreciate it.

Deionized Water (Aqua), Rosemarius Officianalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Polyquaternium 11, Olealkonium Chloride, Peppermint (Mentha Piperia) Oil, Panthenol, Glycerin, Jajoba <sic> (Buxus Chinensis) Oil, Wheat Amino Acid, Tocopherol, Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis) Seed Extract, Diazolidinyl Urea, Quaternium 22.

Many, Many Thanks!
-Jane

Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone

Those are both preservatives. :) Cones mostly all end in 'cone, 'conol or 'xane.

The Bio-Infusion condish is cone free as well.

ETA: If you find yourself wondering about any other ingredient, the list at http://tightlycurly.com/Ingredients.aspx is pretty comprehensive.

I don't really know any good conditioners without cones except for the LUSH, their's are great, so natural and smell great plus you only need a tiny bit even on thick hair.

But most drugstore conditioners I've tried still contain dimethicone which I don't really mind once in a while since it's probably the lightest cone.

Jane of Upton
March 2nd, 2011, 08:35 PM
Thanks for the link, Kaijah!

I've just hit page 42 of the CO thread, and read some more about these two preservatives. Yikers! Nasty stuff!

And good heavens! I've been swearing my ears feel swollen, and the tissue feels weird and scaley. Also, while cooking last night, I got a bit of juice from the meat I was going to cook on my arm (usually no biggie) but had an area of hives rise nearly immediately. Its been a good 10+ years since I've gotten anything hive like.

Now, I read that EACH (Both?) of these conditioners are deemed:

"•Sensitizer - can instigate immune system response that can include itching, burning, scaling, hives, and blistering of skin

•Distinction between safe conc in leave-on and rinse-off products"

And, the METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE is suspected to have nerve toxicity, too.

Oh Yum, and this has a double-whammy since they're both in there. And here I was thinking I've developed an allergy to some food ingredient. I now suspect this new conditioner I was all excited to be using.

Hi all,

so I'm back with more questions. My hair did NOT like the Bio-Infusion Professional Rosemary Mint Conditioner. I think it was the wheat-derived protein. Even when shampoo & conditioning, my hair always felt stiff and tacky with heavy protein conditioners.

Is there anywhere that the No-Cones and No-Protein lists are cross-referenced? I've imported both into a spreadsheet, and am going through separating by Alphabet letter (A's, B's, etc.) but this is tedious.

Also... Mods, if I have the patience to go through and cross reference all of the lists, would this be something you'd like me to send to you?

Many Thanks,
Jane

So I just discovered Suave's Strawberry Conditioner and I think I'm in love! :crush: It smells amazing!! And I think it works as well if not better than the Coconut one. My hair is pretty slippery now out of the shower, something that didn't really happen as much with Suave Coconut Conditioner. Mmmm luv luv luv luv luv :rolling: I've used it quite successfully CO washing, FYI.

Just bought the new L'Oreal Volume Collagen Conditioner today since it was on sale and from reading the ingredients list, I'm pretty sure it's cone free, unless I missed something. Has anyone used this before and is there anything I should be concerned about from the ingredients? I'll be using it next time I wash my hair.

Ingredients: Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Starch Acetate, Cetyl Esters, Isopropyl Alcohol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Chlorhexidine Digluconate, Linalool, Soluble Collagen, Parfum

Coudn't fine the English name of the Guhl 'Pure Glans' conditioner, a purple package.
Pure Glans = 'pure gloss'.
It's lovely, makes my hair soft, smells nice and cone-free.

Maybe Im blind, but I think you missed Urtekram. All of their shampoos & conditioners are silicone free and contain only plant based ingredients. They're certified organic as well. :)

Yay, thank you! I'm excited to learn about this brand - especially the "no perfume" conditioner (here's the link to it on their website: http://www.urtekram.com/no_cache/produktdetaljer010/prodcat/conditioner/2258/no_perfume_conditioner_organic_250_ml-1/)

Still researching natural, vegan, cone-free conditioners. They seem to be full of oils usually or even always. Wondering if just a tiny bit of oil (say, jojoba oil or evoo or coconut) could be used as a conditioner...?

I saw you have "boots basic's conditioner" in the list:

I currently use 'Boots Provitamin shine enhancer conditioner'. I'm in the UK and the person in my local Boots shop spent a while on the phone for me checking whether this has cones in it or not. Apparently it doesn't so I use it. Just thought I'd mention incase it helps anyone :)

I recently went through a bottle of this Rose Otto cone-free conditioner by Dr. Organic
http://www.shopnaturally.com.au/dr-organic-rose-otto-conditioner-265ml.html
I really liked it and it left my hair smelling like rosewater. Definitely a nice conditioner for my fine hair.
It has aloe vera and I know my hair likes that so that may not work for some people.

Hi everyone... this is a very helpful list! Thanks so much!

I see a lot of the V05's on here but not the one I am looking at... I love all things coconut and wondered if the V05 coconut conditioner has cones... I don't recognize any but I thought I would check with you guys to be sure. Here is the ingredients list:

Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Stearlakonium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Glyceryl Stearate, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Benzophenone-4, Propylene Glycol, Stearyl Alcohol, Steareath-21, Polysorbate-20, Tocopleryl Acetate, Panthenol, Ascorbic Acid, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Extract, Niacinamide, Biotin

Thanks :-)

ETA: I have had a chance to double check each of the ingredients. No cones, though it looks like there might be one quat. Quats are over my head so I can't say much about them. But it looks like we can add this to the list of Cone-free conditioners! I'll pick up a bottle :-) It only costs a dollar in the US, too.

I haven't read through this entire thread so I apologize if someone has already mentioned Tresemme Naturals but I've been using it for a couple of months and my hair is loving it. I use the one with coconut and jojoba oil. It specifically says "Silicone Free" on the bottle. Not the entire line is silicone free though so you have to read the bottles. I picked up another one today with aloe and avocado oil and will give it a try tonight.
For my fellow Canadians, Shopper's Drug Mart has them on sale right now for $4.99 if you want to give it a whirl :)

Yes to Carrots is cone free, and my hair absolutely loves it. It's $8-$10 for 500 mL. As I don't wash very often and this stuff is really moisturizing, the bottle lasts for 3-4 months.

I didn't see it when I searched the thread, so I'll say it, I LOVE Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle conditioner for CO-washing. It's cone-free, and I pay under $4.00 a bottle. It works wonderfully for my hair. Very cleansing, and not heavy. I "wash" once with it, and then "condition" the length once with it. It's perfect for my hair, and I say that because I cannot CO-wash with anything else I have tried (cone-free of course), without making *my* hair uber heavy anyway. YMMV

So I have Suave Natural tropical coconut that seems to be so popular as a "cone free" conditioner. I google the following ingredient which is the third one listed on the bottle:
"Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine is one of the leading 'replacements' for silicones in conditioners (For Tresemme Naturals fans - this is the lead surfactant in your conditioner). I placed the word replacements in quotes because it is not always strictly a replacement, sometimes it is added in conjuction with a silicone as happens with Herbal Essences (so in short, do not think that seeing it on the ingredient list means that the conditioner is silicone free)."
Dang! So I looked harder but could not find anything else that looked like a cone...

Oh, I'm currently on an enliven conditioner. I've raspberry and red apple and believe it smells amazing, a bit like candy. Its very moisturising and not at all heavy. I've used it in deep treatments and it go very well for SMT. And the best part is it is cone free and available for a very cheap price. Its the best for wavy-curly hairs.

I saw "dimethicone" and one other ingredient ending in "cone" - but you're right, I don't know which version I was looking at.

I got Garnier Sleek and Shine Zero conditioner (silicone free) just one time, the first time I saw it at the store. Absolutely LOVED the scent and the consistency for my hair, and now can't find it anywhere. 😭 On amazon it's only available from third party sellers for 3-4x the price. I don't understand how it went from new, to gone off the face of the earth so fast.

Where are you located? It's everywhere here, the Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Zero.

I am in Georgia (the state.) It was everywhere for a few weeks and now nothing in that line anywhere! They still have the sleek and shine, but not sleek and shine zero. It also says 'out of stock' on Garniers own website.

Favorite cone free conditioner ever: Earthly Delight, that I used to buy on Iherb. But it's been out of stock for a while...

You can order it from Rite-Aid here (https://www.riteaid.com/shop/fructis-sleek-shine-zero-conditioner-0339535?ra_group=gPLA25pct16)..

Thanks! It looks like I could order it from Walmart too. 🤔 I'm just afraid they would take my money and it wouldn't ship forever. I don't understand why it's not on amazon or stores here or garnier site if they have it in stock.

Actually Walmart.com has free 2 day shipping. I ordered a replacement filter for my showerhead .

I use silicones, just not on my scalp, if I can avoid it. Dimethicone is remarkably an exception in shampoos often and my scalp doesn't seem to mind; but you have to figure this out on your own.

First it has to be dealt with and at bay, with some medicated shampoo or the appropriate treatment prescribed by a dermatologist!

Yamsha23, I'm in love with Earthly Delight shampoo & pomade, which Walmart.com carries, even if the Walmart stores don't. It's funny that Walmart doesn't carry their Conditioner. Maybe if enough people request it?

But!!! There IS a work-around! Lafe's ... I think they bought out Earthly Delight, because it seems like Lafe's now manufactures the entire Earthly Delight line, along with their own Lafe's products. SO, buy directly from Lafe's:

<https://lafes.com/collections/all/products/earthly-delight-hair-conditioner>

Hmmm... Their website says they're sold out right now, but they're the manufacturer, so I guess we should contact them & ask. The more requests they get, the more likely they'll be to resume production, right?

Personally, I haven't found any conditioners that I'm not allergic to (Chemicals bother me. I have a stricter definition of "natural" than some.), but I'm making do with various oils, like rubbing cocoa butter on my ends, or using the Earthly Delight Pomade. And I just found Jason's Vitamin E Skin Oil on the shelf at Walmart this week. Yup! It's amazing on hair! Also gets rid of wrinkles...

You then might want to look into Nightblooming on Etsy. Just FYI. She's got amazing pommades/leave-ins, I always hear.
