I've been trimming, well "dusting" trimming once a month for the past 3 months. My hair went from 18" then. My measurement is 21 1/2" today!!! Hurrah!! My ultimate goal for this year is 35"... we'll see what happens.

i trimmed 1cm in dec, and again i will trim 1cm in May. I don't really make that many measurments of my hair! But it propbably wouldn't matter if i join as my trims are pretty far apart.

I trimmed 1/4 inch off last Sunday and did a microtrim on my face framing layers as well. It has been more than 6 months since I last trimmed it.

I got about 3 inches trimmed off a month ago and as of today it's 32.5 inches long. I have no idea what my goal is, right now it's at my natural waist so I will probably let it get back to the top of my pants again. Once it starts growing longer than that, it begins to drive me a little batty.

Hehe, last Saturday I trimmed of 10", taking me to a pixie cut. Then I got sad. Then I found TLHC :). Now I am growing my hair back! But I will have regular trims (like 1/2" twice a year and occasional S&D), to maintin its beautiful current condition.

trimmed 1/2" today. cut bangs back 2", they are at my chin. these grow so much faster because I keep the dry ends at bay. wish I wasn't so scared to do that to my length I might gain some length for doing that. but for now until I guess next year will be 1/2" every two months. I know after a while my ends really thin out and look too wispy and my wurls don't form right. it is like they need the blunt cut to look decent.

measured length today at 26 3/4".

I only trim once or twice a year, but that's not the same as never trimming, so I guess I belong in this thread?

For the record, my last trim was in November. I'm going until at least next month before the next one, but ideally I would like to make it a full year between trims. I do plan to get myself some hair scissors for a good S&D, but I keep putting off going to the store.

April 22, 2008: 29.125 inches :)
May 17, 2008 29.5 inches -- I got my husband to measure it for me this time, so I'm hoping that will allow for more accuracy.
June 21, 2008: 30.25 inches
July 23, 2008: 30.75 inches (I am FINALLY getting a trim next week and cannot freaking wait)

I definitely don't mind. I'm still a trimmer, but I don't measure any more. It made me too paranoid about "losing length", so I put off trims, and the condition of my ends went downhill. No more of that!

I re-measured after washing last night (cause I thought the dirtiness might have been weighing it down) and apparently it IS possible.
Definitely deserves the dancing cheese :cheese:

I'm guessing it's because I cut off 9" and the damage was holding it back. Now I get that 6-month stall at BSL :o

Well when you started the thread about comparing results I was not trimming. Unfortunately my hair got a bit upset with that plan so I'm back to trimming again. I've decided to trim every 6 months as last time round my hair was happy after 6 months of no-trims with dusting. Nothing's set in stone though.

My hair normally grows 0.5" each month with not a lot of seasonal variation.
Joined June 2006 length 24"
[trimmed about 2.5" during year] June 2007 28.75"
[trimmed 2" in January 08] June 2008 32" (estimated).
So that's a net gain of 8" in 2 years, but worth it because I got rid of loads of damage and still have a reasonable hemline.

I am curious ... if I measure my hair am I supposed to measure it wet or dry? my hair is curly some days and almost straight other days so I'm not sure how to measure it without the "noise" of a different wave pattern.

Oo, I never even thought you could keep up with the lenght like this! I might just have to start ;)

I'm not completely sure as to how to measure the lenght of my hair though. I think I'm supposed to start from my front hairline and then just put the plastic tape measure over my head till the very ends of my hair... Is it so?

April 15th 2008 cut off about 4 inches.
Current length as of May 5th 25 inches.
Next will be a micro trim in June.

June 1st 2008 measurement 26 inches
Micro trim will not be until the end of the month.

Tmmycat and Swanns:

You can measure your hair wet or dry but you must always use the same method each time.
Dry hair measurement is more accurate as wet hair stretches and may give a difference each time depending on how much you stretch.

If you put the tape on the front of your hairline and put it over your head to the bottom of your hemline, then that is the usual method that most LHC'ers use. You may have your own method but as long as it is consistent every month, then it will show accurate growth.

I have been measuring one dry lock of hair at my forehead (I have layers and each hair on my head is approximately the same length right now). I don't have a tape measure but when it is dry and I pull it straight, it is the length of my comb plus the width of one finger, with a few sparse hairs sticking out further than that. And my hair sits in the nook of my collarbone if I pull it around to the front. ah, measuring without a tape measure! I will report back in a month and see if I have any progress.

I trimmed two weekends ago, still trying to get rid of my extreme taper and even my hemline up. Probably took 1cm off the longest bits. I will try not to trim again until August or September, at the earliest.

Like Spidermom, I'm not obsessing about measuring, because then I get upset and feel like my hair isn't growing. The last 4 inches or more of my hair are still bleach and heat damage, and I probably won't have an even hemline or less taper until these, and my &^@%# layers, are gone.

My goal is waist length but THICK - if that means these tapering ends down to my tailbone, so be it - I want the very thickest part of my hair to be at waist. Right now, it's thickest between APL and shoulder, so a long way to go.

Think I shall keep track here, a little belatedly.

April 1 - 34 inches
May 1 - 34.75 inches
Next trim - July

*Very* unusual for me to get that kind of growth, but I had significant changes to my routine during April, guess they worked!

My husband just trimmed 4, yes 4 inches off. It is now just to the top
of my bra strap or so. It feels so thick and appears wavier! That was
what I wanted! I feel I can wear it down or 1/2 up without it looking
thin or straggly.

In a few months I will be back to close to what I had. Its a nice change for now!

yeah. so much better after a trim. and definitely will have it back to your length. I always cut in my bang area and those just grow so much because of no dry ends. I need to get brave and take off 2" off my ends and I would probably get better growth. but for now I am trimming about 1/2" every month to take care of ends and keep some thickness at the ends. I can't stand my hair to be thin and straggly. my curls suffer.

I last trimmed 1cm in May 1 or 2.
Now it is a month later i plan to trim by the moon and i think i decided to trim 1cm on the 19th. I think i am going to cut a layer in too only to get rid of the parts i highlighted 3 years ago. (they are the bits that cause tangles and don't feel smooth) I think that will help me hate my hair less.
My plan is to trim 1cm a month-probably till next year, but i am trying hard to be more firm and believe i don't need an APL or bob chop!

I did my first dusting within the past month and plan to start trimming in September so I guess I belong here now! I'm at 24.5" and hope to hit 25" sometime in September. I'm not sure my measuring skills are that great though, because they're never the same. But I'm BSL at the longest layer. Hopefully through trimming I can get them all to the same length by early 2009.

Well, my hair never got too long.
As someone who is into fashion design I am trying to be updated, and long hair doesn't always fits in it.
In its longest condition my hair was about 20"-21" long, but never passed that (unless you count my childhood :))

Ummm, does hacking off 3" with the grooming equipment count? Yep, did it again last week. Although it was the hair or jerking a little arthritic peke around, so the hair lost..hair grows back, hips are hard to replace...I'm now at 27"

After not measuring frequently and just measuring the trimmed amount (ca. 1cm every other month). I decided to maintain at fingertip to thicken up my hemline. I΄m planning to trim off all growth for a while. So I need to find out how much new growth is going on there exactly. Which means I΄ll have to start measuring again and then I can share my data as well.
So :D here I am.

Plan:
Trim off all growth on every first wash day in odd numbered months, maintaining length is fingertip (119cm / 46inch).
Date and amount of trim to get back to 46inch:
2008.09 / -1inch

I can't remember when my last measuring was. My hair is 21" right now. I think the 1600 mile move a few months back traumatized it, but it seems to be taking off again. It also seems to be thicker, which could just be from the humidity here.

Got a trim on Dec 24, 2008. I went from 29" to 27"
It's sad, as far as growth goes. But it got rid of the sun- rusted tips & split ends, which drive me crazy. It also means my hair looks a little fuller.

Hi, my current length is:

Jan. 1, 2009 --- 26 Inches.

Had a trim of a little over half an inch on nov. 20, 2008.

I will search my notebooks for further (prior ) trimming info.

In the last 2 years ( 2007--2008 ) i trimmed every 6 to 8 months, which i am not sure if it is the cause of all the side breakage i've had. could be the changes of poo and condish i've been trying, and alot of tangles around the back, top of my head, which i am still seeking the reason why. so as of today, i will try to trim every 3-4 months and hopefully by the end of 2009 the sides will even out the rest of the hemline and i will have a straight across (blunt ) hemline. which looks best on my hair. ( IMHO.)

so until later.

How often should I be trimming my hair? How much?
There's no reason to trim it at all if you don't want to. Some people like a very trimmed hemline, and others like a natural hemline. A small trim of only 1/4 - 1 inch can help with tangles if you are getting them. Otherwise, it's up to you. If you are happy with your ends, and you are trying to grow longer, don't trim. Cutting never makes hair longer, only shorter. ;)

I'm back on this thread again probably until early Summer 2009.

Maintaining at BSL to let layers catch up, but can't quite bring myself to chop off ALL the growth, so I'm probably gaining about 1/4" every 2 months. Hoping to have straight-across hemline by Summer 2009, then let it grow down.

Mid-Dec 2008: was 25.5", self-trimmed back to 25"
28 Jan 2009: was 26", self-trimmed back to 25.25"

Well.....I didn't make it. :o

I was going to leave the tape measure alone and not fuss over my length until the end of March, when I'm due for a trim, if needed. BUT....the waiting got the better of me.

I measured in at the beginning of January, at 40.25". I'm now at 41.5", as of the end of February. I'm excited!! That's over an inch...but disappointed in myself! Can you imagine how excited I'd have been in March, to see even more growth?

I guess I just don't have the patience to do the "Put it up and forget about it" thing. :p Blame it on having so darn many kids; they siphon the patience out of me!!

Measured earlier this week, to put me at 42" on the dot...which is CLASSIC!!! YAY!!! :D :D :D :D I'm super-excited...and now I'm maintaining right here, until my ends thicken up more. I'm surprised that they look as nice as they do, having not trimmed in 4 months, but by no means is it all at one static length of 42". My bangs I've been growing out are at a bit over 41", which is closer together than I thought I would be. YAY!!! :cheese:

I measured my hair for the first time ever today. It was 29.5 inches/75cm. I thought it would be shorter, but I measured my longest part and not my layers.

I haven't decided on a goal yet. Although I think I would love classic length hair... I suppose I can start growing now and decide later. The main thing I want to do right now is grow out my layers.

I did a trim of about an inch and a half last night, which is putting me at around 40 1/2 inches. I really needed it since I was overly-worried about the condition of the last couple of inches. I'm not super-worried about losing my classic goal - it'll grow back. I've never had a stall in my life, and with good diet and vitamins I'm not likely to have one now. ;)

So my long term goal is still knee, since classic is still within my reach easily by the end of next month. :D

Jamieleigh did you trim regularly throughout the growth of your hair?

Good thing I came back through this thread! I'm sorry I didn't answer right away. :flower: Yes, I've trimmed regularly to keep my hemline thick. It's taken me longer to hit milestones, I think, but in my opinion it looks much better on me. :) But mostly little microtrims, as in this much. ----> _ And maybe every 3 weeks or so I've done that. But I did a good 2" trim back in May.

I'v been trimming an inch every 2 months for a year now so my length hasn't gotten any longer. At the rate I'm going, its going to take me 3 years to get rid of all the damage:boohoo:

You are very disciplined with those scissors. My last trim I only cut about 1/4 inch off (I usually trim about 1.5-3 inches to keep my hemline thick... my hair is relaxed). I'm going to try cutting a 1/4 inch a month to see how my ends look, and if they look pretty descent, I'll try cutting 1/8 inch a month. ;)

edit: trimmed 8/31 1.5inches :p

I'm not a non-trimmer any more. I did a self trim yesterday that amounted to an inch to an inch and a half to start to blunt my V hemline. It didn't make a lot of difference on the appearance of my overall length. I think this is because most of my hair isn't as long as my longest ends are. My longest ends are 33 inches now.

I hadn't measured in quite a while, so this weekend I was at 35.5. Then I did a trim, so I'm at 34.5. Trimming every three months, keeping it at Tailbone, and trying to thicken up the ends.

I've been growing out a Mohawk so I have to do trims to keep the shape from degenerating into a mullet type style. So in October I hacked off a good 2-3 inches in the back to turn it into a reasonable bob and I've been growing parts of my bangs out while cutting parts whenever I feel there is too much in my eyes and to keep it from being too Emo looking. I also had to cut my forelocks off so they matched the rest of my hair.

Currently at 14 inches from a .25 buzz on the sides

Hi. I just trimmed my hair and it feels better and looks thicker. Have a lot of layers. Now I´m wondering if I should cut off more because my ends are so dry.I tried cocnutoil and it feels ok for a day but the next morning they feel like dry grass,,I have bleach in my hair and I´m growing out my virgin hair. But at least 5-6cm are so dry. can I save them?? The ends are not split or like that. Just very very dry..
Have a nice day. Here in Sweden it`s almost midnight =)

I didn't grow much last month. My measurement for Jan. 1 is: 27 1/2 in. I hope that I am not at terminal length. Seems like I am losing a lot of long hairs, seems like I would eventually not have any long hair left. It is already pretty thin, & has always been thin, but I have NEVER had hair BSL before, so I guess I will have to wait & see. I may have to trim it back if I wind up with 2 long hairs & the rest shorter :(

I've been cutting my hair for like four years now and have hardly gained ANY length... I turned a brunette and had a change of heart and wanted to go back to blonde... OUCH! My hair was totally fried and it took me til now (4yrs!) to get it back in ok condition :( Now Im just trying to be super nice to it! Had my first trim in 3 months last week (appr ½ inch) and Im not having another one for 3 months now... Can see some split ends though that Im trying to trim myself one by one. Vitamins, deep conditioning... Im trying everything to make it grow :)

I haven't checked in to this thread in a minute, lol. :p Currently I'm at fingertip, which is 46" tape-measure-wise, and approx. midthigh. I just two days ago discovered this forum, and have to say that I find it interesting to see that so many is into saving their hair! :)

My hair is at the present 28" approx.

I try to cut it regularly, last time in Desember, and I plan to cut it again after Easter.

Earlyer I got some layers cut into my hair, so I also cut my hair so that the longest parts of my hair will not be to thin... I will rather use some time to reach tail bone length, than reaching my goalt with thin thin hair! (I'm also quite short, so for me tbl is 40")

I played the "wear hair up" game from mid-January til early June, and during that time, I didn't trim at all, since that would qualify - in my book - as "messing with it", which is what the wearing it up thing was supposed to prohibit. (Hi, my name is JamieLeigh and I have a messing-with-my-hair problem...;))

So my length was almost 50", which is very nearly knee length. As I am still a fan of the blunt ends on myself, I cut about 3.5" off the hem and went back to 46.5" last I measured, which was the end of June.

Right now I'm pretty happy with the way my thickness is starting to move down. My braid stays thick past BSL and on toward waist before tapering now. :) Hopefully this will keep up.

I dust my hair every month or so. I've been trying to even out my layers and get rid of damaged ends. Also, I started a scalp massage routine and have been taking MSM and Biotin 3x daily. It's really helping. At the end of June I was 22.5"

Now at the middle of July I am at 23" exactly.

I trim once a year tops (only when my ends are completely dead) and then next trim will be a long way yet, but it still counts so here I am.
The inches are a bit rounded, since I mesure in centimeters.

2010:
- 5th of July: 24" (61 cm)
- 29th of July: 26" (66,5 cm)
--> couldn't resist the temptation and measured early to see if there was any progress, wasn't expecting 2"! Yay! :D)

- 5th of August: 27" (69,5 cm)

After summer the massive growth slowed so I wasn't motivated to measure so much. Hopefully it picks up again once we start getting more sunlight here.

2011
- 16th of January: 29" (74 cm)
- 9th of February 29" (74 cm) --> bummed about the lack of growth until I realised it's because my ends are breaking. I need a trim.

Goodness, I've completely fallen off the wagon here...and at my current flat there's no mesuring tape so I need to wait two weeks to see if there's progress. I hope and would say that there is, since I'm almost at TB, when in February I remember I was at least a palm's width away. I'm eager to see how much progress thre is, since my ends are in a bad shape again, which tends to stump growth.

Do some of you trim your own hair? :/ Just some of the posts I'm reading here come across that way..

I get mine trimmed every 3 months or so, but am always fearful that they'll take too much.
Early this year my hair was at my ideal length, just to my butt - long enough to touch the chair when I sit, without me sitting on it.. and I went to the salon to get a new fringe cut in & emphasized that I didn't want to shorten the length at all, only to find the hairdresser had taken almost six inches when I got home! :(
I was so upset because there's no going back & it takes so long to grow that amount back..
Hence why I'm still looking for a hairdresser that respects the length of my hair & is happy to work with styles to complement that, rather than getting overly 'creative'!

I'm defenitely pro trimming.
A small trim keeps your ends healthy ^^

I neglected that for a while and my ends started to thin out.
So now from July on, till december I cut away my growth...
And already it looks much better!

Length now = 27.6" (70 cm for me, nice and round ;) )
My average growth = more or less 0.5 - 0.6" a month

July - 2"
August - 3"
September - 4"
October - 5"

I measure the longest part, which is right at the very tippy top of the crown. Currently, my bangs (which I just microtrimmed) are just over 3" (it's hard to see on the ruler, so I have to approximate), and the sides reach the top of my earlobes. Everything is in layers. I'm letting all of my hair catch up to mid-neck length, and then I'll just start microtrimming from there. :D

Well my hair is about at shoulder length. It was long before and I did not trim so I had fairy tail ends at about hip length. Later I cut it to chin length. This time around I am doing regular trimmings. My mom gave me a micro trim one week ago today and it has grown 3/4 of an inch! That's in ONE WEEK! Wow!!! My hair is in great condition now. I will keep everyone posted and get some pictures up soon.

PS. My hair is 17.75 inches now when measured from front hairline to back end length. I am sure that it has grown too because I could tell otherwise, so it wasn't like a mismeasure :D

Well I guess I am a "trimmer" cause I trim occasionally... once every 3-4 months... less when my hair is healthy! I have gone 16 months without a trim or cut before, but that wouldn't be normal for me... although twice a year is not uncommon!

I measured the other day and got 26" (not sure how accurate it was though cause I didn't have a decent tape measure).

So I'll say January 22nd 2011 = 26" my goal is waist length by June (approx 29").

My hair is waist length and I get my nephew to trim it about once every 2 months so it more or less stays the same length. There is no way I would let a hairdresser near my hair.

I don't measure my hair every month, but in about a year and a half I went from 76 cm to 90 cm, with 3-monthly trims from my mother-in-law.

At the moment I'm at 91! ^_^ I'll try to keep up with measuring, because I'm curious how fast my hair actually grows. Ohw, and it needs a trim really badly, so I guess I will be set back with my length in about a week or 2.

10 March 2011: 91 cm :)

March 2011: 24 inches
April 2011: 25 inches

My BSL is 29 inches, so I hope I'm there by August; sigh. My overall goal is waist, which is around 34 inches.

So far so good. Started on hair vitamins in early April, they really made a huge difference. Well, so did diluting my shampoo, CO-washing, and a ox-horn comb, but it was probably mostly vitamins.

This is great coming from a girl who couldn't grow to save her life.

From February 2011- 26"
April 2011- 26.5"

I went through a period where I just wanted to hack, hack, hack. It certainly helped because I've only had one or two split ends and I can wait longer between trims, but sacrificing length...man...

July 1st I measured in at 28"! I haven't measured since April 1st, when I was 26.5"... I did trim off almost 1/2" in April (about 1cm) so I think, overall, I'm happy. It's a little more than 1/2" growth a month (if you take the trim into consideration).

I haven't trimmed anything but "bangs" since Dec 2010. My current length is 33.5 (current avatar pic) but I still have layers and taper. My "bangs" are about shoulder length. I want to go until Dec 2011 without any more trims to see how much length I can get.

Ok; I'm going to document my starting length. I had a dusting about 7/27 and my current length is 26". I will probably get another dusting in Sept. or Oct. and then a 1/2" or more trimmed in early to mid Dec. I'll measure again at the beginning of Jan, 2012 if I can stand to wait that long, lol. ;)

Okay so I have not trimmed all summer seeing that I was traveling the entire time and just kept my hair in a braid. Before I left my hair was about 31" and it is now about 33.5" and pretty wrecked from the summer. I think I'm going to have to cut that 2.5" of growth, but I feel okay with that. My hemline is simply atrocious at the moment. I also have one of those hair string weave things at the nape of my neck, so if I cut my hair then it will be longer and remind me of how long it was before I cut it! I may cut out the string weave too...

Becky Safari
September 3rd, 2011, 08:52 PM
I cut off about two inches, and will save the other half inch to inch cut until I take the hair string weave out.

Make that a total of 3.5 inches cut off, I am now at 30 inches. This is the shortest it has been in a while, but it's also the best it has felt in a while. I would say that nearly all of the damage I have been working toward eliminating.

I trimmed my hair the other day. It was originally 28 but I trimmed a half inch so now I'm at 27.5.

I also relayered my hair not too long ago. I'm growing out the bad layers I gave myself a year ago this time. And they had gotten long enough so I could even them out (ie the layers in front were longer than those in the back. . .by a lot. Think scene hair. It was bad.)

I plan to straighten my hair soon so I hope to even out my hemline then.

I just measured for the first time in 4 months and I'm trilled to finally be at waist (32'') :D
I only gained 2 inches in 4 months so my goal of hip (36") is still 8 months away if I don't trim. I'm not trimming in 2011 but a tiny trim maybe in order early 2012.

I've been trimming to thicken up the hemline and cut out all the damage from my ombre highlights I've since covered over from the summer. The bleach damage will be hard for me to grow to waist or hip maybe. I was 28 inches in the summer but now I'm 27.25 and after my trim this month it's at almost 27 inches. I love the way the ends feel and how much easier it is to handle. No more snarling together and that occasional snapping sound when I'm rough with it! The only problem is I'm resisting with all my might not to go scissor-happy or go in to get a mid-length cut at the salon.
