Just what are they? I've always trimmed them off, as I often see them on damaged strands.

They are like a blowout in the cuticle of the hair. More often than not, IMO, they are a new born split end. That little end below the dot will break off and then the white part peels apart.
I snip them when I see them too!

I get so many of these. It looks like I have flat ironed my hair for months, only... I haven't. Sucks. I cut them off because these strands are often really really thin anyway.

I'm glad to know that they are beginnings of a split end, I had been wondering too. I've been snipping them off knowing that they can't be good!

This article by Nightshade has great examples of what different types of hair damage look like. An example of what a 'white dot' looks like under a microscope is shown under the heading "Heat Damage". They're really pesky, they can pop up anywhere along the hair shaft, it seems!

I'd like to know more about what causes them, as the hottest thing my hair ever sees is the water I wash it in, but yet I've always got thousands. :(

I think I just cut off about a thousand today. Pesky, aren't they?

Those would be split ends! Or breakage might be a better word.. I get them on the hair shaft a few inches from the end...

Do you know you have 2 threads about this?
They are breakage/new split ends, I trim them off when I see them. I usually find more of these then actual split ends.
