Orchid Bun

Recently, after looking through several different bun styles that I could perhaps learn, I came across the orchid bun. I like it very much because it looks very simple and elegant, is supposedly very secure, and my mother keeps many orchids herself. How uncanny. :)

However, the tutorial here: http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=40856
is kinda baffling to me. I don't really get what's going on. Is there any chance someone could direct me to a more in-depth tutorial?

I think you make one bun coil, an upside down "U" - then you take one side and move it over to the other side (right to left, not up and down) - then you continue to coil your hair around. I think the reason it is so secure is that in flipping the first coil, you are stabilizing the bun somewhat.

This is one of my favorite styles.
To do it I start as if doing a french twist or log roll. then bring the twisted length down parallel to the french twist (FT) like base. Flip the FT part over the twisted length. Then wrap the length that's hanging down in circles around the FT base, tuck in ends and secure.

To secure I usually put the fork in at the FT part side and the ends of the fork poke out and hold down the wrapped part. That way it's super stable.

Try as I might, I COULD NOT get this to hold. I was following the instructions as they are in the video.

However, when I flipped the U the *opposite* direction it worked MUCH better.

Sadly, not very well, though, it either keeps unravelling, or is just not secure (tried both a stick, and fork).

Ah, :hmm: I never noticed this... but you may be right. ;) I will have to look more closely. Perhaps this is why I have issues, myself (with the bun, not in general). I'm getting them all mixed up by the written and the visual. LeaM07's looks like it'd be a little easier for me to follow. I'll have to try later when the kiddies are in bed.

I guess since I can't get a cinnabun to stay with a stick, it shouldn't surprise me this wouldn't stay. I tried the Orchid again and no matter what I do, it let's loose.

Usually I use a Fic. Maximas to clamp a cinn. bun, but I tried to pierce it this through with an Innovation. Funny thing is, the Innovation creeps it's way out of the bun over a little while.

It's like my hair is at it's slippery-est with this style! lol

Ok, this is what I did...I think...oh a whim, mentioned in my earlier post...flipping it the *opposite* way compared to the original video, and continuing the wrap *clockwise*. It's weird...as far as I can tell they both start the initial twist of the length, in the same direction...

Neither works well. I hate bobby pins so I judge a bun by how few I'd have to use. I'd have too many floppy bits to wear this without alot of pins.

For the moment I've tried it again and it's holding alright with the large Innovation clip. I find it hard to do *and* keep my pulled back hair looking smooth while I do it. What I DO like is that it's larger than my cinnabuns, and it looks more like a conch, which is pretty cool!

Some years back ajr posted instructions for an Orchid Bun and it's similar to this, but made *with the hairstick* and holds very well. It is my go-to bun. :)

Bah! All I get when I try (any method other than embee's and I'll get to that in a minute) is what looks like a messy figure-8 that falls out if I do more than blink. I've got to be doing something wrong somewhere. However, embee - thank you. This (your method) I was able to accomplish on the first try. It took some wiggling because like you said, it got a bit tight there, but I like it. Will practice it more, I like the look and it's kind of a big bun...

Anyway, I'd post a picture for proof if the albums were working...

I did it using the tutorial in the op. The instructions seemed easy enough, but mine looks kind of wonky and isn't really that sturdy. I could post pics if people want to see my misshapen hair.

This is the ONLY bun I've ever had feel secure with a single stick and without an elastic!

I've had good luck with the lazy wrap, but for instance would NEVER wear it to work without an elastic...and prefer a fork for safety. This one, I DEFINITELY would!

I need help! I've always struggled with this bun and I figured out why.

Every tutorial I have found for this bun, the person in the video twists with their left hand and I absolutely cannot do that. I tried just doing what's being done in the video in reverse, but I get too confused. I don't know what I'm expecting here, but can anyone help me out?

I take my ponytail, I can use both hands to start twisting hair up and towards my right ear. I go up with my hair. I can use both hands to slowly twist it up, over my head even (almost waist length hair, so, not long). When the length is twisted, I put my right hand thumb above the base of the twist. Loop the tail over thumb, tail goes behind and down to the left. Use your right hand to turn the twist of hair over it towards your left ear to make a loop of hair. Tail is trapped against your head now maybe at 8:00 on your bun? Tail goes around the bun counter clockwise to get tucked under the loop at around 1:00 on your bun

No, you got it. It's not messed up at all. Sometimes I take that center puffy part and flatten it to the left and secure it down with some tines of a fork or a second stick. But your way looks really good.

If you have thicker hair than me, it's gonna be a bear with hair as short as waist.

I do think you may have tucked your tail too early. I usually continue around a bit longer and tuck it at 1:00 or 12:00 to make a rounder bun.
I also like to have the loop slanting a bit to the left, so my fork insertion can be on an angle.

Also, I apologize to those who I have influenced to contort their right hand towards their left ear. There may be a less awkward way to do this. I'm left handed, naturally awkward, and have long monkey arms.

I can't tell for sure, but it doesn't look right. I'm trying to look at it and backwards engineer it with my mind, and I cannot see the distinctiveness I am looking for to mark it an orchid. That doesn't mean anything much though. Everyone's hair may look a little different when bunned especially accounting for variations in technique.

Beautiful, Kherome! I can definitely see the orchid blooming. Myself, I've always used a stick which gives difficulties sometimes, so I'll opt for a hair fork instead (as soon as I buy one!).

Hi, sorry, I just saw your response Wildcat... I used LeaM07's tute. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/blog.php?b=6494) It's the only Orchid one I have ever been able to understand. :confused:
I will keep practicing. The thickness of my hair often gives me problems with twisting certain buns correctly. Maybe I still need more length?
And often looks more lumpy than I would like, too...

I swear by this bun! It is my "to go" hair style and it doesn't need any fixing or re doing for me. By looking at the pictures, I realized that I put the stick through different loops of hair but it is sooo secure :) My avatar is a picture of my orchid bun back when my hair was shorter.

Oh, I'm so glad I spotted this thread, because I'd almost forgotten about this bun. The last time I tried it it just looked sad and wimpy (blame the CO shed). Now it turns out that I can finally do this bun and have it both look decent and stay! :joy:

A slightly different bun called Orchid Bun is my go-to bun. I got the instructions on the old board many years ago. ajr posted them... before youtube! :) I reposted them on page 2 of this thread. Very quick, very simple, very secure.

I never could figure out the OP's instructions, the bun never held for me.

This is one of those styles that I love but can't seem to be able to do on my hair - pulls on scalp like crazy (from that higher coil) and falls apart right away on me... similar issues to the evasive figure-8/infinity bun. I might be able to achieve this with a mini-bun (half-up bun) though... I need to be patient and keep practicing... :meditate:

I found a way to make this bun a bit more reliable for me.

When I wrap the hair around the stick, I hold one finger along the stick. That means that the hair goes around the stick and my finger. This gives enough looseness to allow the stick to be twisted and woven into the bun.

Still playing with this bun. I've found that, if you start with the stick on the side of the ponytail, instead of above it, the stick ends up horizontal, which I rather like.

Tried it with all the different methods, and the original works best for me (so far! I don't know if it would hold for a full day) as long as I hold the twisted hair tightly while I flip the loop to keep it all tight enough. It's exactly like starting a helix bun.

I've been lurking while you've been posting about this lately, and thanks to you I tried doing this bun your way for a couple of days now (had to retrain the brain farts from my muscle-memoried hands), and LOVE it! It's so perceptibly light and comfy, looks great with lovely balance, and holds the ol' slipmonster fairly well. Well, kinda. My hair eats hair forks for breakfast, as you can see in today's Orchid Bun pic...

When I first made that bun, it was more upright and the fork was fully visible with the loop behaving well. Lazy buns, I haz 'em. :knuckle:

Could anyone give me an estimate of the minimum hair length you have to have in order to do this bun? I’m curious as to how long I have to wait :)

Altáriel DelMar, I can just barely do it at waist length, which is about 34 inches on me. You might be able to do it with shorter hair if it's thinner. The thicker the hair the more length you need to be able to wrap it. So it's hard to predict exactly when you'll be able to do it. Good luck and happy growing.

Thank you! :flowers: For doing this bun at shorter lengths, you could always split your hair into sections (it thins and lengthens all at once)--maybe do a half-up (split horizontally--bun the top section and leave the lower bit down), or twin buns (split/parted vertically)? Or if your hair is too short still, split it into even more sections (3, 4, 8...). Any bun can be done as long as there's enough flexible length to twirl (so not on a buzzcut or pixie with a few inches of growth... :p).

This is one of those buns that I have to rotate an extra 1/4 to 1/2 turn before I pin down. It holds well enough; just needs a bit more torque to stay put.
