I had been using acv with cinnamon sticks from mid august until some time in October where i realized in the bath room that my hair looked lighter and slightly more blond than i remembered it being. I don't usually look in the mirror, and if i do its in the crack of dawn amount of light in the morning, so i notice these kind of things. I just brushed it off as being the type of light bulbs in the bathroom. Well, I went out side that day and while i was out around 1 ish or 2 i took a good look at my hair and almost screamed! it was definitely lighter and was a whole lot lighter in sun light. :scared:
I immediately switched to rosemary. and the results of that are another story. Granted both worked really well at disguising the vinegar smell and didn't dehydrate or fry my hair. Other that color change issues which i was not initially aware of I liked the results of both very well.

How did you use the vinegar with the cinammon sticks? Did you use it for rinses? Diluted with water?
:confused::confused::confused:
Thanks!

Do any of you know if cinnamon will lighten blonde hair to a lighter blonde or make it more reddish?

Does any one know if it will lighten hennaed hair? I hennaed my hair black last in October, but my hair is multitonal. Four or so inches from my roots my hair is completely black and I'm struggling to get the colour out, but I've managed to remove the recent henna dye by my roots with lemon and conditioner.

Henna only comes in one color -- red/orange. Did you use a particular company's "boxed blend" and if so, what ingredients were in it?
I've heard that removing indigo can result in green hair if you use peroxide, so it's important to know what it was that you actually put on your hair.

I'm SOOOO glad I happened across this today! I have been looking for a alternative to honey since I am vegan and I wish to lighten my hair without damage. ^_^

Last night I slept with a mixture of honey, cinnamon, evoo, emulsified with bottled water...I love my henna color, but so many consecutive full-head applications have made it quite dark....just looking for some brightening...the cinnamon is a p.i.t.a. to rinse out! I have a honey conditioner on right now, and, hopefully, when I finally wash/dry my hair it will show some kind of minimal change....if nothing else, the "burning" sensation on my scalp was actually quite nice, and maybe it can stimulate some of those stubborn hair follicles, lol...

I'm so sorry, I never replied to this... I'm still figuring out how to use the boards. I've been using the vinegar in rinses (dilute, 1 tablespoon to one cup water). Sometimes once a week sometimes twice. I just pop between 5 and 7 sticks in half a jar of vinegar and then just leave it like that.

I bought a huge jar of cinnamon but suddendly I got unsure
I bought Cinnamomum zeylanicum also know as Cinnamomum verum, from Sri Lanka.
It is the one which light your hair or I made a mistake?
I'm feeling dumb

The hilarious thing about this thread (well, at least to me) was that last night I was reading a website about Viking hair care.. and how most vikings bleached their hair with 'cinnamon, clove and other herbs.'
IT IS A SIGN! Maybe I should try it? Hmm.. I don't know.

Thank you!

My test:
Maybe I did something very wrong, but I tried to do a cinnamon/honey/chamomile overnight 'mask' (also pre-oiled my hair with coconut oil as a bit of protection). I found the recipe elsewhere online, so it seemed like a somewhat legit method. I saran wrapped and everything, so it didn't dry out except at the temples a bit.
Still, days later my hair feels kind of brittle (the crunchies), tangles more, which is a bit worrying since my hair has been excellent lately before that.
I've tried a bunch of different things to get my hair mojo back (especially since I plan on doing henna very soon) but to no avail. I use coconut oil regularly as a leave in (started to use Argan oil, which I prefer, until my little sister broke the $40 glass bottle of it) and everything, but it just feels like it is laying on top instead of really conditioning as normal.
I imagine using it slowly in conditioner like the original poster did accidentally is probably better than doing an overnight go of it. I haven't read through all the pages, maybe someone else had success doing it this way, but for me it feels like a fail.

Can we have a link... and do they list other herbs than cinnamon and clove? I have an extra bottle of vinegar I've been wanting to scent but i couldn't think of anything good to put in it. Cinna-clove-____ sounds like it would be a good smell. ;)

I tried mixing cinnamon oil with my conditioner but apparently added a little too much because I ended up getting burned. Literally! My neck, half my back, and half my face were beet red when I got out of the shower and my scalp burned with the conditioner on. So, if you do try, double check for allergic reaction first! Two doses of Benadryl and Aloe Vera gel fixed me up, but it still scared me.
Be safe and have fun, on the bright side, my hair smells glorious!

I've done 8 treatments, mixing two tablespoons of honey with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and roughly 8 tablespoons of water. I leave it on for around an hour, and have had great success with lightening my dark brown hair. I didn't want to lighten it too much, just enough for my henna to show up better the next time I do it.
I took some pictures but haven't been able to accurately capture the shift in colour. You can definitely tell in person though, and several people have mentioned the difference, unprompted by me. :inlove:

I've added cinammon to my vinegar that I use as a rinse and have noticed my hair feeling dryer/more brittle than normal. I haven't noticed any lightening yet, but its usually on my hair for a very short time and is quite dilute.
I'm a bit worried about the dryness I have to admit.

I just lightened hair last night for the first time with a mixture of mccormick cinnamon and conditioner. I made a very thick paste of cinnamon, using at least a cup of cinnamon and then adding in Suave clarifying conditoner to apply to my shoulder length thick, wavy hair. My hair is naturally a light auburn, but I have permanent Feria copper chemical dye that was applied 6 months ago over part of the length and one 30% henna/70% cassia treatment over the top of everything. The henna did make my hair redder, but also much darker than I wanted. I applied the mix thickly, covered with a shower cap, and left it on for approx 11 hours. The cinnamon burned pretty severely where it dripped and touched my skin but i was able to get it off quickly and cover the red blotches with aloe which helped. My scalp also burned tolerably for about 20 minutes, but stopped after that. I really wasn't expecting much, but this morning my hair has been lightened several shades and is very close if not identical to my natural color and has a ton of golden highlights. I wish I had taken before pictures. I don't think the cinnamon added any red tones at all, but it's hard to tell because it seems the added red from the henna has been lifted and because my hair is naturally light auburn. I might do this one more time to see if i can get the color to match my virgin roots exactly, but it definitely won't be for 11 hours again or I'll probably end up a blonde. If you can handle the burn and are willing to take the risk of having to wash the cinnamon out early, I would definitely try using at least a 50/50 mix of cinnamon and conditioner. My hair feels a little dry today but nothing too bad, It could just be because I had to I CO wash twice and wash with shampoo once to get it all out. I plan on added a touch of coconut oil to help with the dryness.

Cinnamon has a pretty good peroxide value = content.

According to this chart there are a lot of other spices hiding in our cupboards we could use like black pepper, nutmeg, turmeric, and cardamom. All of these have comprabable or higher rates of POV as cinnamon. Has anyone used these other spices with results?
Also, can anyone explain the other columns in the chart? The first column simply lists the POV of the ground spice, but I don't understand the titles of the other two, pet.ether soln fraction POV? It has different numbers as the first column, does that mean the one with lower numbers in the second column are less effective, even if they have a high number in the first?

I suppose you could try Turmeric, and I'm not claiming to be well versed in any of this, but do bear in mind that Turmeric stains like the devil! So, it may lighten your hair and turn everything else around it a lovely shade of yellow.

May be off topic, but can I say that this is a hysterically stereotypical title for a thread here on LHC? If there were a comedy skit put on by some of us, we could take this concept to new levels. '
I am entertained by all of the natural remedies and accents to hair there are. Cinnamon has worked for me in the past.

I read before that turmeric decreases the growth of facial hair when applied as a mask...I would think twice before putting that to my hair

ok..i did it...wow my hair feels good and the smell is amazzziiiing!! it did lighten it..not alot but you can tell. it is a lil difficult to get all the cinnamon out though..lol. I used conditioner (garnier fructis the sleek and shine since it contains argan oil) and 1tbl ground cinnamon. I didnt measure the conditioner. I have waist lenght hair very thick so i just squeezed out enough in a bowl to do all my hair and then added the cinn and covered up and left on for 2 hrs..looks like it lightened the area that got to dark with the indigo. i would do this again just for the smell..lol but it did make my hair nice and soft too (:

I also tried this last night and I can see a little lighten. Half cinn & hald conditioner, on dry hair left over night. No problem with the wash. I've been hendigo for 9mos and just didn't like the dark hair it became. It was so black black. I will try it again in couple day, hopfully it will be lighter.

Currently sitting with 2 tbls of cinnamon mixed with V05 conditioner in my hair.
Naturally dk brown/black. Keratin/highlights/2 chemical black dyes (last chem was late last year/early this year. Currently have several full-head apps of henna. Grays are coppery & the rest (at least the several inches w/out chem dye) has a red sheen in the light. I'll post before/after picks later.

Only left it on for 2 hours. No noticeable difference. I'll try longer or maybe use honey as well on my next attempt.
ETA: about 7 1/2 hours this time, little to no difference. Hair's a bit dry. Taking care of that now. Then again, my hair is pretty dark to start.

Im part of the rooibos experiment, and i contemplated posting this there.. however, the question is cinnamon related, so I figured id post here. The rooibos tea I bought is a mixture of 2500 mg of: rooibos, cardamom, cinnamon bark, ginger root, clove bud, and stevia leaf. Based on the combo and the presence of cinnamon bark, if I spray a mist of the tea on my hair daily, is it going to lighten my hair? I don't want it to

I think I over-cinnamoned. I tried just putting some in my conditioner and letting it sit there while I had my shower, even though you're supposed to leave it in longer, right? Anyway, I didn't measure it out or anything (too lazy) but I would guess I used about two teaspoons, maybe a little less. I did feel the burning, it wasn't intolerable but it was definitely irritating. My ears still feel hot and kind of itchy. If I am going to mix it with my conditioner like the OP did, should I just use less or steer clear of it completely if it irritates me at all?

It irritated me less the 2nd time & I used 2 tbls both times. Dried my hair out the 2nd time. 1 use of Aussie 3MM took care of that.

I've only done it twice. Didn't do much if anything. Then again, my hair is pretty dark to start. I oiled (coconut) for a couple of hours before 3mm, so that may have been a big part of the help. I'll prob try the cinnamon again next week - have company all week so not much time for hair wierdness :p

Hair weirdness, hahaha :D My mum finds it quite strange and amusing all the weird things I have been doing/ thinking of doing to my hair. I have coconut oil on my hair right now and my hair doesn't seem to have suffered terribly with any drying effects (but then again I did only use it on my roots while I was in the shower). So, inspired by this thread I did a honey/olive oil/cinnamon mix and left it on overnight. I think my hair is slightly lighter but not that much. However, the one and only reason why I'll never do this again is THE SMELL :disgust::disgust: It was absolutely nauseating, all though the night AND this morning. It made me feel like a walking christmas cookie-gone-wrong :( So no more of that for me, it's honey from now on for lightening hair :D

It doesn't look like other people have found this problem, but just as a word of warning... I mixed cinnamon and conditioner into a not quite paste and left it on my hair from 4pm until morning the next day since I was out after wisdom teeth surgery and why not? I've noticed more red tones and a very slight lightening, but the most dramatic effect was my hair's dryness. Thanks to a switch in shampoo, my hair has been super soft all summer, but now it feels rough and much drier, although it looks a bit shinier. I feel like it's probably from the sheer amount of time it was left on, but be careful with straight cinnamon lightening. Next time I'm going out and getting honey, since my face won't be puffed up and swollen...

Cinnamon contains starch, mucilage and some resin - all could cause a feeling of dryness. It should wash out with shampoo fairly easily or over time.

I'm sorry I can't read the whole thread now (just started really). Does it make sense to infuse EVOO with cinnamon, use it as deep oiling and wash it off with CO? I tried to put cinnamon in my condish and CO with it (left for one hour). It didn't work out. It left residue on my hair and my scalp is less than clean... :(

So i tried it. Lots of cinnamon with lots of conditioner i would say 1/3 cinnamon to 2/3 conditioner.. i put it on my dry hair with my hair upside down so it didnt touch my back. I was thinking leaving it all afternoon but then i had to go out so i only left for 2 hours. For me it wasnt difficult to take it out at all.. anyway the results.
im dark blonde with natural highlights and my hair can go from ashy (inside) to golden (outside) but i can say my hair looks a lot more golden now. I dont know if its lighter but knowing my hair for several years i know that when i lift my colour it goes way more golden.
Anyway i will do this again and i will do it only on top hairs cause i would really like to have some contrast and i believe that it would be easier then to see if it really does lighten or not.
My goal is to have it a bit lighter so i can have a henna/cassia gloss to bring some even more intense golden highlights.

Currently the cinnamon is tingling a bit, but not neccessarily irritating. I am a blond with reddish undertones - spun gold like some say ;)

Obviously the Henna will tone everything a bit more when its evolved its colour
Now the Henna toned it down alot ;(
And I think that if you "cook" cinnamon you loose its ability to lighten...
SO this time I didnt cook. I mixed my fav conditioner/aloe vera/honey/lemon juice/tomato puree/olive oil AAAAND the star CINNAMON ;) we will see. I still smell like a christmas cookie hehe

That's incredible Áine!!! So you just putted ground cinnamon in your conditioner, leave it a few minuts *like all conditioners* wash your hair and two months later you got your hair lighter? Really? :O
I've been trying the honey treatment i think last time i did it it was the 6th time, my hair is now a bit lighter but you can only notice in sunlight :___

It seems my hair hasn't changed, but since it's the first time i think it's normal, haha xD
Anyway, next time i'll mix more cinnamon!!! I'd love to had my hair lighter >__<

Does nayone know if there would be a negative effect to leaving in the cinnamon/conditnar for too long? I've had mine in for 15 hours now (I dislike washing my hair in the day).

I tried the "2 tablespoons honey, up to 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon or cardamom, 1 tablespoon evoo and 12 tablespoons distilled water" version ktani suggested, and let it sit for around 2 hours and washed it out (cinnamon bits all over the shower!!!). My hair seemed to love it, less frizzies and a lot more shine, though the result was darkening instead of lightening. It's nothing significant, it just took out the tiny natural bright blonde highlights I get and replaced them with dark reddish/brown tones. I did it again the next day as well, which I suppose was overkill as my hair felt slightly coarse after that...
The funny part, though, is that I've probably washed my hair around 8-9 times or so since the cinnamon treatments, and every single time my hair is clean and wet the cinnamon smell is still there, and quite noticeably so! O_o

I cannot think of anything in your recipe that would cause darkening. That has not been reported until now.
The recipe can be left out to sit for an hour before applying and filtered first, to eliminate the cinnamon bits.

Thanks for the tip, I'll let it sit next time before using. And as for the darkening, I really don't mind it at all, I liked the end result... but perhaps it was the type of cinnamon I was using? I really didn't check, just added what I had at home. The colour I got in my hair was pretty much the same colour as the mix I made... I really can't think of what might have caused different results. I'll update though if I come up with one. :) Nevertheless, the colour I got was quite pretty... just wish my hair was a little lighter to show it properly.

You are very welcome.
Cinnamon has not been reported to do that either. If you followed the recipe with an apple cider vinegar rinse, it may have given you the dark reddish tint. It is known to do that.

Never tried the ACV rinse... I'm starting to feel like some kind of an alien at this point :| My only routine right now is the honey treatment for SD (90% honey, 10% water applied to the scalp, every other day) and a touch of coconut oil after washing the residue off with either a regular SLS or SLS-free shampoo (the latter doesn't seem to clear the honey off my hair/scalp though). Didn't have oil or anything of the sort on my hair either when I tried this, just untouched second day hair. Weiiiiird. :(

Thanks for the info on how long you leave it on! I thought it was as long as you want, and I ended up going 15 hours, no cinnamon smell result.
Could you leave it on after shampoo? Or would there be a problem with rinse out?

The recomended time to leave it on the hair is 1 hour. You can leave it on longer for an extra hour or so. Different honeys have different peroxide peak and decline times.

The 90% honey may stain your hair if it dark enough. It is not diluted 6 to 1 like the recipe although that should produce some peroxide. If your hair is dry and porous it can absorb colour from a shampoo or conditioner.

Sorry, I do not understand the question. ETA: Ah I am better after a coffee first thing am, lol. You mean on freshly washed hair? Yes, and you can also conditioner wash it out afterward if you like.
Any honey applied to the hair can leave a residue that is best removed with shampoo. Otherwise, it can be rinsed out with water and followed by a diluted vinegar rinse if necessary.

Sorry, 6 to 1 recipe for SD? If so I don't know about that recipe. Or am I totally getting confused here?

I should have been more clear. The recipe you used for your honey lightening is double the basic one for the honey to water part - 1tablespoon honey to 6 tablespoons distilled water or 6 to 1. You used 12 to 2, which is correct for the new dilution recommendations based on that.

Oh sorry, I'm not using it to lighten my hair, just as a seborrheic dermatitis treatment. Unless both treatments basically have the same effects, which it seems like they do. Interesting. Thank you for all your help, by the way! :flowers:

You are very welcome. I was going by this post of yours, which is the lightening recipe, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=1805843&postcount=316
If you are also using the 90% honey 10% water recipe, that may be causing the darkening. The honey is not that diluted and the amount of water would not result in enough peroxide being produced to lighten hair, depending on the pH of the honey and water.
Undiluted honey can stain fabrics. Diluted enough and at the right pH for the solution, it can produce its maximum peroxide level (variables are the honey and more) to lighten hair.

Well I tried this today on my hennaed hair and it didn't lighten it at all but it definitely DID change the colour. My hair is now a lot more brown than it was. I actually think it removed a bit of the henna as I had some orangey yellow run off even once all the cinnamon was well and truly gone. It's dark outside right now but I'll try to take a good comparison picture in the sunlight tomorrow.
Either way, I definitely plan on trying this again to see what effect repeated applications will have.
For those that are curious, all that was in my mix was coconut oil, conditioner and cinnamon. About 2 tsp of coconut oil and then I just added conditioner and cinnamon until it was about the consistency of chocolate mouse. It seems I used a lot more cinnamon that most people here have done so that might be why mine did this. The parts of my hair that seem to have had the most dramatic change actually had a cinnamon conditioner mix that resembled henna mud on them(I hadn't mixed properly), these bits don't seem to have much of a red sheen at all.
Edit: Seems the brown is a temporary thing. It's definitely back to a more red shade today. Here are a couple of before and after pictures if anyone is interested. I don't see a lot of difference.

Oh I was reading this thread and I just had to make me some cinnamon-honey-mix and EAT IT . I also have a little test making it's effect on my head... 😋
