Seeing as there is a poll about circumfrence of hair, I figured maybe we could share photos! I actually managed to upload a few new shots, and took one of my ponytail. Please excuse quality--this camera is old and the battery doesn't hold a charge.

I should add I'm about 3.75-4.5 depending on my shed level.

I am about the same as you. My hair has always been super thick, but I think I'm shedding a bit since the circum feels smaller.

Nice Little Orca! I hear you--I've been in a mini-shed, so I'm more just under 4' right now. Not that I'm complaining. :)

I just measured mine and it is exactly 3" in circumference. I think this is an improvement from when I joined LHC several months ago!

OK.. I need to ask something.. wasn't circumference measured about half way on the head? Basically on the height of where the nose is?

I see that, I see nape.. which is right?

Actually circumference needs to be measured where you can get the most hair in the ponytail. It could be right at the top of your head, doesn't matter. But generally people do it at nape, I measure at nape too but it doesn't effect the category for me it's iii on top of head or nape.

I measured it to be 2.5 inches. If I added my thick bangs to it, I would be at three easily.

Hehe I like your way of thinking! But still people with lots of hair don't have to fear that they will end up with a straggly little bit left when they get older and their hair falls out (I have heard scary stories from people whose hair started thinning later in life)
And you can do more with updo's if you have thick hair, I already notice I can do more now then a year ago!

I'm sure the intention wasn't to be insulting, perhaps the choice of the word 'loser' gave the wrong impression. Certainly the extra thick circumferences and most luxurious ponytails are most thudworthy, but I have found the reaction even to my very modest offering very positive and encouraging - thank you all!

Healthy hair is good hair. It all looks the same thickness from the back when it's down anyway, with very few exceptions. So who cares. I'm a bit over 4'' and if I had any more, I would probably tip over because I'm built like a bird. Really thick hair isn't for everyone and most of the people I know with what I think is the prettiest hair, have fairly thin ponytails.

Great ponytails all! This thread has really shown me that every ponytail can look great regardless of the circumference.
It has inspired me to start a similar thread on my website, you can't imagine all the beautiful ponytails!

I want to get people away from the numbers...they are too fixiated on it in a not so positive way, and some do get pretty sad about it.
But pictures show that there is really not that much difference between 1" of thickness...
It matters more what comes out of the ponytail after the elastic, and here it is all healthy and nicely cared for hair! :karma: :flower:

Here are a couple of mine from two different angles. It's amazing how much thicker the bottom one looks.

I usually measure 2.25" but sometimes get a little more. I think some of these pony tail shots would be good in the hair typing article. It gives a nice visual to the ranges of thickness.

Huh? I didn't say they do. I said I was impressed that they still posted their ponytail-pictures. I said that only complimenting everybody with amazingly thick hair makes those with less than 4 inches of ponytail feel like a loser. It's not what I otherwise see in this community, where everybody is encouraged and people like to compliment on condition of hair, wave, straightness, whatever, they will look for something pretty in every picture.

Not all of the thick ones got compliments, anyways.

IMO thats saying us thick haired people made the thinner haired folks feel like losers. Those people may feel very proud of what they have, just as they should be.
No, it isn't very nice to only pass compliments to those who posted pictures with amazingly thick hair. Otherwise, this community *likes* to pass compliments.

I agree thats not very nice, but it doesn't seem very nice to single people out either. It's possible that no one even noticed that those few people had smaller pony tails until you categorized them.

Anyway..I'm not here to argue, just hope no one got thier feelings hurt.

I do feel like some of us with thinner hair feel inadequate next to the thickies. And it's hard to compare a photo of pony tail circumference (which shows nothing of the hair below) and be wowed by a thinner circumference. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. This is a hair growing site though. Most of us would probably like to have thicker hair. Thicker ends, fuller looking hair, etc.

Besides, I'm certainly not impressed by my own pony tail. It is what it is, though. I also don't feel like a loser. After all, I can only make it as thick as nature intended. And it's thicker than it used to be. :D

I like this thread because it demonstrates the differences in volume. Something hard to tell from length shots alone.

Sometimes I too feel inadequate next to thickies but that doesn't intimidate me from posting.
I just figure that it is all in the genes. Sometimes the ponytail circumference thickens up as hair is kept longer. I have found that to be the case with me since I have alot of taper and when the taper moves downward there is more hair in the ponytail. I also think that if my hair were coarse instead of fine that would play a role in a thicker ponytail too:) A smaller ponytail doesn't mean less hair.

Yeah, I have course hair but less hair than most people. Since redheads on average have less hair than average on their scalps, but I still have a thick pony. This is why when I shed my circumference shrinks quickly too.
Whereas I'd rather have lots of finer hairs! It's all in the genes, like you said :D

I don't know how well these turned out (if you can tell the thickness too well). I have never thought I had a thick ponytail, but when I would go get my hair cut, they would always tell me that my hair was thick.

My circumference is 4.65", measured a few days after washing when it is sleek and tightly bound. Measuring it in any other condition only produces an inconsistent/inaccurate reading. :)

All I can say is WOW - some beautiful hair here! I am new here and can't post a pic (yet), but my circumference is small enough that it's really hard to measure (ha). I think it's 1.75"...... ugh. I'd love long hair, but I sometimes wonder just how pitiful my hair would look if I grew it much longer. Oh, welll.... I'm still looking for a photo on here of someone with long VERY THIN hair. *sigh*

Anyway, it was nice to see a few "small" ponytails, which I think are beautiful! :)

Lovely ponytail. And for the reason you mentioned, I don't know my circumference since I can never get sleek or even tightly bound hair. The closest I've come to that kind of pony tail (rather than an afro puff) in the last 8 years or so is this:

Hey Eric I get what you mean about being 1a silky straight!

When I airdry my hair outside or ruffle it up it will measure about 5 inches around but if I brush it when it's drying to smooth it, it will be 4...

But my huge 50's style fringe measures an inch on it's own in a teeny comedy pony so I guess I'm a iii really too? :)

Either way I think your hair is beautiful :D

No its not but he didnt exactly say how many inches it was around he just said it doesnt look thick but it is. The only to know is for him to actually take the measuring tape and measure then say it doesnt look thick but it is this and this number. That said, if someone posts that they're an iii, or ii, or whatever, and doesn't give a measurement, I'm not inclined to disbelieve them, especially on the basis of a single photograph.

He's the one who said it doesn't look as thick as it is. I simply agreed. The photo showing its circumference would not indicate to me that it's 4 inches.

If in actuality it is 4 inches then that's great, he's a iii.

Well, this is an old picture of my ponytail, but I think i have the same circumference (I hope!)

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb116/LittleBirdLongHair/Site/04-Ponytail.jpg

Anyways, I'm not sure about the thickness... My sister measures it as being 13 cm all the time (5.12 inches).
I measured it today, myself, and had 10 to 11 cm (3.94 to 4.33 inches)
I prefer assuming I'm a ii/iii than a iii because I think it's hard getting this measurement right. But I'd like to assume the 11 cm better than the rest.

I do measure my pony circumference every couple of months, but I pay more atention to my braid thickness and how I can wrap my fingers around my ponytail.

Ohhh weeeelllll.....

If your hair is growing and is healthy, I think thickness is not that big of a deal.

I would measure directly below the elastic and as tight as you can to get an accurate measurement since you're wanting the volume of hair, not volume of hair and space between hair. ;)

Thanks! That's what I've been doing.
Although in a way I feel that the space between the hair also has something to do with hair volume... because before I went WO, my hair was a lot "puffier", and I definitely think of my hair as being more voluminous back then even though I didn't actually have more hair. But I guess you're right, this measurement should have more to do with the volume of the hair itself, regardless of how "puffy" it is.

Here's part of my ponytail. It's not thick (3 1/4"-3 1/3", depending on where I measure) and I sometimes feel a bit insecure about it, maybe because people used to tell me my hair was too thin to wear long and that I should get a shoulder- or chin-length bob. It's much healthier now, though, and I'm happy with it most of the time. I've also learned a few updos that make it look like I have tons of hair. *happy dance*

Wow, I forgot about this thread. I looked through it again.. ponytails of 4.5" or more, I can't even imagine! My wrist is about 5.75", that would be a huge amount of hair.

I still don't have a picture of mine, I have to take one. Last time I measured it was still 2" at the nape, 2.5" in the middle of my head, and it tends to look smaller because my ponytail puffs out from the elastic so much.
