Oh yes indeedy (http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/86427/Woman-weaves-entire-wardrobe-out-of-hair).
A WOMAN has woven an entire wardrobe of clothes out of her own hair, after growing it for more than 50 years.
Ioana Cioanca, 71, has created everything from a hat to a skirt from her 40-inch-long tresses.
She told the Austrian Times: I have nine items a hat, a shawl, a skirt, a blouse, a raincoat, a purse, a handbag and a pair of gloves.
They are all slightly different colours because of course I went grey over the years.
The 71-year-old from Bistrita Nasaud, Romania, added: I did this because I wanted to show how practical human hair is.
"The clothes are warm and comfortable and the materials are free.

I think itīs kind of cool, :D eccentric and evil genius like.
Which patience she must have to actually weave with hair. I wonder how she spun it before or if she used it strand by strand for weaving... sheīs not accidentally giving lessons?
Icky and ewww? Hmm, isnīt it surprising that so many people think hair not longer attached to the body is icky? What is it that makes hair "eww" as soon as it leaves ones head  itīs not gross as long as it grows, right? As soon as itīs on the shower floor, in the sink or on a brush / comb it seems it becomes toxic waste for so many people. While on the other hand wearing wool (fur, leather, silk, felt etc.) is not considered gross and real live sheep are not as white and clean as we tend to picture them in our minds.

I ask myself the same thing! why we consider a woven hairstyle to be beautiful as long as it's attached to a head, but it seems gross to wear the same hair as an item to keep you warm.
Animal hair is not gross
I do wonder how long it holds, is it as strong as wool, fur etc?

I think it's interesting and rather cool too. It is more surprising to me that we don't use our own hair than that some people do. I wonder how many people on LHC collect their shed hairs? (besides me... :o)
It's interesting to see how many icky and ewww reactions are coming from long hairs. Any wonder why long hair is considered icky and ewww by some of the population when it is still attached to the head? How much difference is there between hair on the head and off it, and why?
That is really really gross.
That underwear must be... itchy.
Why would it be itchy? It doesn't contain lanolin as sheeps wool does. It may be far more suitable for a human to wear than wearing some other creatures hair.

Why is human hair icky? Angora comes from a rabbit. Wool comes from a sheep. Mohair comes from a llama. Camels hair is considered luxery. I consider wearing the hide of a dead animal icky.

Perhaps not for vegans, though??

What makes a fiber itchy is it's diameter, not the presence of lanolin. I wear microfine merino wool against my skin almost every day, and it's not itchy at all. Cheap wool with large diameter strands makes me itch to high heaven.
Wearing hairshirts is nothing new (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilice). I hope that hair used to weave this clothing was relatively fine, otherwise it will be horribly scratchy on bare skin. My own hair would be great for cordage, but would make terribly uncomfortable clothing.

Wow...that's interesting! I wouldn't wear hair underwear though. It drives me batty enough if a hair gets stuck in my bum in the shower. And there's more than once a day my butt tries to eat my undies. lol I don't think the shirts and such would be itchy...I imagine they would tickle more than anything...kind of like a stray hair does ....it makes me feel like there is a little bug on my skin or something.
With animal fur, it doesn't seem so "eww" to me because animal fur covers their entire body, versus human hair from the head is on the head...even though as it gets longer it lays across other areas (shoulders, back...) When I empty my hair brush I don't go, "eww"...but I am careful to not drop any hair as I throw it in the trash. I don't know if I could wear a shirt weaved out of hair. but it is interesting none the less. :)

Very odd. I remember reading an article on someone who'll do that with your dogs hair.

I don't understand the "ewwww" and "ick" response.
Not that I'd want to wear it next to my skin, because I've gotten occasional hair caught up in my knitting and crochetting, and they *itch* like mad. They're pokey, they stick into me.

As soon as it's made into a wig or extensions most people don't have a problem with wearing other peoples hair.
Maybe hair should look like hair?

Interesting, but it sounds uncomfortable. I wonder how well it wears, compared to wool?
My mom is collecting her dog's shed hair (mostly undercoat that comes out during brushing) so it can be made into yarn, so she can knit something from it. My first reaction is that it sounds kinda weird, but what would you rather have, hair that you know where it's been and how it's been cared for, or wool from some anonymous sheep that's gotten muddy and poopy and everything else?

The only "eww" for me is that the underwear is French cut. Do you know how many women actually look good or feel comfortable in French cut underwear? Me neither but it can't be many!
People in love with their dogs and cats have been weaving their fur (as they shed) into hats and sweaters for ages. Nothing eww about it.

I don't know, but--not to be gross...okay, this IS going to be gross--would you drink milk from a cow? Probably. Would you (as an adult) drink milk from a human breast? Probably not.
It may be partially cultural; it may be a throwback to some genetic memory of people taking one another's "parts" as charms or talismans, or to use them against us...or as battle trophies...I don't know. But there undeniably IS an "ick" factor to any sort of human "remains"; we think of them as dead, whereas when they're on us, we feel they're alive.
Just the way it is.
I tried very hard to be evolved and mature about this but I honestly did just about gag at the sight of that underwear. If I'm unevolved, so be it. ;) I personally don't necessarily find anything damning in noting human nature. I find human nature fascinating, actually (and psychology). There isn't always something wrong with being human and reacting in a fairly standard human way. ;)

This reminds me of something I saw at a historical textiles show once. It was a Victorian sampler stitched by a girl in the workhouse who had not been able to buy thread, so she'd used her hair instead. I thought it was rather beautiful.
Also, human hair is surely the most natural thing to have close to the skin, given that we are actually covered in it? If we use energy and protein to grow hair than using the final product is good sense, and certainly one way to cut down on your carbon footprint!

Did she do it all in one go? That seems like an awful lot to get fom one head even if it was long. Unless it has a 10" diameter.
I'm not sure if it's gross or not in my book, but I wonder if some felted items could have been thrown into the mix? They'd be like dreads, and quite cool.
I saw someone on tele who made a felt bra ou of hair she collected from her brush. The colour really suited her...

That's a good point...I guess people consider it 'waste' once it leaves your scalp.
I don't think it's nasty or gross to make clothes out of hair, I mean as long as it's clean what's the problem? It's the same as wool pretty much...a lot more humane than fur and leather too. The underwear, yeah that's kinda icky IMO.

I think it is a beautiful thing that she did! Can you imagine she had the vision when she was 16 years old!!! And had the paitence to see it through. It was her own hair for pitty sake!!!! It was not in the shower drain! She cared for it and carefully grew her hair out until it turned grey. So that she could be clothed in it. She even made gloves for her hands! I think the pieces look beautiful and so very carefully with love made with her own hands. I do not in any way think it is gross it is beautiful she is going to be clothed with her own hair. It is a part of her. My hair feels so good when it touches my skin. It is her own hair, I bet it feels wonderfully warm and soft. It was her dream her vision and her hard work of her lifetime! It makes me want to cry for her and I applaud her for her work. :knit::queen::applause:applause:applause

Yes, we would save alot of money and animal fur/hair if we made clothes out of our hair...but idk, not my speed I suppose. Well maybe its the hand spinning fiber nut in me but I think its interesting. The "underwear" look like they might be blended with something...the diameter of the yarn looks too thick to be straight human hair. If its wool or a blend of wool and a softer fiber, the human hair would probably not be itchy. I would not personally want underwear out of my hair but I don't see it as gross....no different than dog hair, or any of the other varieties of animal derived fiber....silk comes from a moth after all.

Wow. That takes a lot of patience and skill and time. I am impressed.
I keep thinking of hair shirts and humility and penance and all that jazz when I read about clothing made from fibers called "hair."
I think it is a cool project, but because of the time involved in growing the hair and most people's gross out factor when it comes to shed hair, hair doesn't seem terribly viable as a practical, alternative fiber.

My middle-school art-teacher wove herself a sweater/jumper out of her dog's hair. Yeah. We all dreaded days it rained.
As for making a skirt out of shed hair ...erm... Wow...

What makes a fiber itchy is it's diameter, not the presence of lanolin. I wear microfine merino wool against my skin almost every day, and it's not itchy at all. Cheap wool with large diameter strands makes me itch to high heaven.
.
I'd say then, that you're very lucky. All wool, even the super fine stuff that others rave about, makes me itch. I always thought it was the lanolin, because my skin can't handle that either, even the super refined stuff that is used by nursing mothers.
I don't find my own hair to be itchy when it is next to my skin.
You'd be surprised how comfortable wool underwear can be. :)
I leave all the wool underwear for you then and just take the cotton or silk!! :D

I ask myself the same thing! why we consider a woven hairstyle to be beautiful as long as it's attached to a head, but it seems gross to wear the same hair as an item to keep you warm.
Animal hair is not gross
I do wonder how long it holds, is it as strong as wool, fur etc?
Agreed, it's certainly different, but gross? Nah, we use animal products all the time on our bodies. If you thought hard about a lot of stuff we use, it would seem grosser than human hair. I just can't imagine her collecting it like that and putting so much work into it, pretty surprising.

Wool is too hot to me, I get overheated, even in the winter (which isn't very cold here in California). . . so wouldn't wool underwear make you sweat?
Butt sweat doesn't sound very appealing.:hmm:

Although I'm still kind of musing over the irony of saving shed hairs to weave a set of hair panties when we already have hair down there. Couldn't she just grow a full natural bush and wear that instead? :hmm:
well I was going to comment on where she got the hair for the panties from but I didn't want to lower the tone :hmm:
:spitting: I too was thinking of the same thing .... why use hair to cover something already ..... :lipssealed:( I think I need this )
Frankly when I first read this thread , I too went gross and eeeeoooooowww. But after reading till now , I fust feel its a bit wired , maybe because I'm hearing somthing like this for the first time , whereas sheep and camel skin was common much before we were born. So maybe this exclamation ... I'm sure by the times our kids grow, and always assuming this "thing" becomes common , nobody would react like this then :hmm:

Itchy. That is the one word this brings to mind. Hasn't anyone ever gotten a hair down their shirt? Attached or loose, it itches like the dickens until I find it! This is best done in the bathroom, fyi. The one time I just went into the corner, a co-worker caught me elbow deep down my bra, hunting for that offending hair. :cheese:

It's possible to create extremely lightweight knit fabrics with superfine merino wool these days. It feels just like light cotton, except it actually wicks away sweat and dries instead of staying damp and clammy.

I've wondered about that too. I think it has something to do with the concept of abjection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abjection). Like a boundary between living and death, or between our boundaries and the rest of the world, that we instinctually want to maintain.
I wonder how comfortable cloth made from human hair would be.

Actually, this is why I don't drink milk. I wouldn't drink mothers milk after a certain age, why on earth would I drink another animal's mothers milk?
But seriously, I don't think I'd wear human hair clothes. I don't like getting shed hair stuck in particular areas, the idea of clothes made out of hair doesn't seem comfortable.
Hair panties. I just had to say it. :ponder:

In an article in a Swedish newspaper (about the women who made that underwear) she said it was a traditional handi-craft and she had learnt from her mother. She was the only one in Sweden nowadays I think...... People comes to her with hair and asks her to weave things.

Wow!! Amazing! Thanks for sharing this. Having dealt in antiques, I did know that there has been "jewelry" made from hair, mostly mourning jewelry (with hair from a deceased loved one) that dates from the Victorian era. Usually something like an intricately woven hair item (maybe shaped like a ribbon bow) enclosed in a display locket or brooch.
Although many of us are wierded out by the hair clothes idea, initially, it is a novel idea!

Oooh, neat support spindles!
I wear wool undies and lots of other wool things. The breed and quality of the wool are generally what makes it itchy. Not all wool is suitable for wearing next to the skin, but the nice soft Merino that Icebreaker and SmartWool use is very nice against the skin and wicks away sweat unlike cotton, which just gets clammy. (Speaking of ew!)
I too wondered about the itch factor, thinking of hair shirts and such but then I think the discomfort was really the whole point of them, so sure properly spun hair likely feels a lot nicer! After all many people have the wrong impression of wool based on scratchy Army blankets...
Also, hi zombie thread! Brought back from the dead all the way from 2009!

I find it slightly creepy, plus it's probably hard to do.
But it's probably the least irritating material you can use.
I wonder - has anyone made make-up brushes with human hair? I find it really hard to find high-quality brushes that don't irritate me, and they have fur of different animals... I'm guessing human "fur" is probably even better, especially if it's your own!

Mmmhm I would rather wear my hair than animal skins. Could be all the years I was vegetarian, but I have issues with wearing leather too.

For those citing single hairs in shirts as a reason for itchiness: surely you would also find a single cotton thread down your shirt itchy? I definitely do, and cotton clothes aren't itchy in the least.
I imagine clothes made of human hair COULD be itchy though, if the ends stuck out and split. The tassel of my braid is a little itchy on the skin, but it's just because my ends are a little damaged. As for washing, I'm sure one of those special washing fluids made for cashmere would be all right, maybe with some fabric softener.
This just doesn't seem that icky to me, especially if the hair is washed beforehand. I wouldn't wear hair knickers, but that's mainly because I think they look strange. Any sort of chunkier knit, no matter what the material, is weird for underwear in my eyes, and cotton and silk work awfully well. Hair might work nicely for scarves, jumpers and skirts though - a little pencil skirt in a hair colour would be really useful. In fact I sort of want one now

I think it cultural thing. This is what most of the people think:
-Hair is okay when attached to the head
-Shed hair is grows
-A hair\wool that after processing is not grows anymore. Hair extensions made from a human hair is the most expensive and quality ones. Same thing about clothes made from fur. Well, maybe it washed once before the process but still it not a bןg difference. I can wash my shed hairs too and people still will thing it disgusting.
I thing it is cool to do things from shed hairs. It is looks a little itchy to wear as clothes (I wear only cotton because the same reason- wool is itchy for me), but it can use for many cool decorative things. I hope I will find something cool to do with my shed hair.
