When my hair is in a tight English braid, I get between 5 and 7 depending on whether I bother to include my layered ends (which I usually do because my tassel would be longer than my braid). If I braid loosely, it's more like 4 or 5.

At the moment I'm getting 15 bumps, sometimes 14 depending on how tight I'm pulling my praid together at the time.
My braid is getting so thick at the top where my natural hair is finally getting long enough to reach into it. I'll be so happy when I can get my braid to reach all the way around my neck and drape it over my shoulder AND get it to stay there :D

Mah bumps are low in numbers compared to you all, adding up to five (and that's with a teeeeeeny bump on the bottom and the shortest tassel I can manage!). However(!!!), not long ago, I only had THREE bumps, so I am most happy. I look forward to the day when my bumps are abundant and the braid is free of layers. But for now, I enjoy my current braid which just keeps getting better :D

Okay, I now have some pictures. As another user said, the number of bumps depends on how tightly you braid your hair.

Here is my hair braided as tightly as possible. It has 7 or 8 bumps depending on which side you count from. I'd have less bumps if I didn't still have layers in my hair, so grrr... You can't really see the taper in this photo because of the weird angle, but it's definitely there.

Here is a looser braid. It has 6 or so bumps. The looser my braid, the less bumps it has and the flatter it becomes in shape (as opposed to tighter braids, which are more like "ropes" as my DBF puts it). I like how the looser braid makes my hair look longer and less stubby.

Fizz, you also have INSANE thickness going on there (like UltraBella....GORGEOUS hair!).

Try parting your hair down the middle and only braid one side of it, then see how many bumps you get then!

Congrats! I can manage five on very greasy/oiled hair, usually it's four. Actually it must be three more but it doesn't hold due to my layers, the ends come off and no matter how tight I tie it it falls apart immediately. I guess my hair should be TBL or longer for it to go down the back like normal braid.

Yup ;) I feel the same way when I see those with those nice chunky braids that get 6 to 8 bumps and their hair is probably as long as mine LOL.

I think I'll be using this method as a gauge not only of how much my hair has grown, but how much it thickens after I get rid of some of this taper (patience... patience...patience...)

Thank you. And I usually do wear both underwear and other clothes, I generally do not run around like a chubby Lady Godiva. I however mostly have black clothes so I was thinking that my braid would show up better against my skin which have the color, as my mother put it, of the underside of a dead slug. :P

Unless you have hair allot thicker than mine, an if you do then I am jealous, then 15 bumps should definitely be lower back. It is not often that easy to see how long hair really is unless you look at a picture of it.

I have found that the number of 'bumps' in my braid depends on how tightly I braid it, so that varies each time I braid my hair.

The one I'm wearing now, actually, has 25 bumps...so you can imagine the difference that a tighter braid will make, as far as bump-counting. I got 19 bumps in my braid now and here is two pictures of it. Yes in the bottom one I am stark naked but I have cropped the picture so you will not see any chubby witch bum do not worry. I did the pictures this was because I am Goth so almost all my clothing is dark and my own skin was the only way I could get good contrast.

My hair really doesn't look as thick as it is, either. Between the oiliness and the super tight braiding...

Aww, shucks, thanks Madora. :o I always wish I had hair more like my mother's (very red) or like mine was when I was very young (deep, intense red). It looks a little dark in that shot because it's greasy, but it's not a bad representation of my color. I'm used to it being lighter from the sun, but I've been dealing with Lyme disease since at least March '11 (didn't get diagnosed until December), and that keeps me from doing much, so I don't get outside like I usually do.

I count my braid bumps too. I have 2 at the moment... sometimes three on one side and two on the other. I could possibly squeeze in one more but a lot of hair would be falling out as I'm growing out an inverted bob which makes the ends uneven when it's pulled into the middle (if that makes sense). Similarly to having layers.

I prefer French/Dutch braids, as I can get more bumps. I can feel seven on the outside of my Dutch braid right now.

One year and a half later I just realized I've doubled in bumps (10) and that's with leaving about 2-3 inches on the end tassel. Forgive my braiding skills I should have combed my hair before braiding it.

How many bumps will depend on the tightness of the braid and your thickness. The bump counting is more of a personal measure for me, I'd just like to have something to look back on to see my progress. If you braid at a nearly consistent tightness (tight braids are bad for hair anyway), it should give you a pretty good idea of how much growth you're getting.

They were concerned I was in heart failure....then when they ruled that out I had to have 3 scans and some bloodwork to diagnose a potential pulmonary embolism; thankfully that was negative too, and it turned out to be a very ATYPICAL asthma flare up !

My blood pressure was through the roof, I was short of breath, had edema, pulse racing......not my 'usual' at all, and so I headed for the ER thinking it was my heart after 3 days of getting worse (and I have had severe asthma at times over the past 30 + years!).

My own doc thought it was asthma when I called him to follow up....so he gave me steroids and I did my nebulizer round the clock.

After much rest, today I was 95% better!

I think length, mine is 37 inch and curls, mine 3a/3B ( depence whom I ask) are almost simulator too. I have a lot of tapered from post partum shed, but my base of the braid looks prettige simular too. But one day in the future I'll have the same pretty braid. Fingers crossed

We're super hair-twins, then, Totty! :disco: That's great, I don't think I've had a hair twin before. I'm also recovering from a shed (hypothyroid), I just don't braid the lower part of my hair as tightly as the base to disguise the taper. :p
