I have read mixed information on whether it is better to use silicone or non-silicone products to promote fuller-looking hair.

If you have fine hair and have used both silicone and non-silicone products, please share your experience as to which one helped you in creating more volume.

I don't use silcones any more, or at least very rarely, but the best volume added that I get is from herbal washes and henna. Not chemicals, but then I have a hard time finding things that don't have gluten or preservatives that I can't use. So I tend to stick to natural stuff that I can make, or know is free of problematic ingredients for me.

Silicones give me a lot more slip and tangle-free hair, but they make my hair limp and it seems very thin. No-silicones produce more volume, also some waves, but unfortunately also tangles. I haven't figured out how to get the best of both worlds yet...

I voted that cones give me more volume, but I had better explain that. By more volume, I mean my hair frizzes up, dries out, and becomes a giant tangly rat's nest. So while I'll appear to have a *lot* more hair, it's not in a good way!

Some people really love cones, but I'm not one of them. :)

Silicone-containing products made my hair smoother and sleeker but with less wave and a bit less volume. That would have been OK except that they also made my scalp get itchy, FAST, and seemed to leave me with weird buildup on my scalp.

I did get compliments a couple times on my "coney" hair since my hair without them tends to be super messy...but the scalp issues weren't worth it.

Cones straighten my hair and give it lots of slip. It also makes it very very sleek and thin looking.

I'll have to dig out a picture from my cone days...

I am exclusively cone and sulfate free.

Cones remove my wave and make it straighter and sleeker. Like Katze, they make my head itch though.

If I want straighter hair, I'll use a coney conditioner. I just haven't had the desire in the last year or so for straighter hair.

I have very straight hair. I have a lot less volume with cones, but my hair breaks and tangles so bad without them that I refuse to go cone-free. I've just started clarifying more.

Cones make my hair thinner looking, stringier, grasier looking, and totally take my waves away. Boo! Hiss! :p

I voted that I didnt notice much difference. I think without cones my hair was maybe slightly fuller, but only on the length, my roots are flat, doesn't matter what I use really.

Even if cone free did give me more volume I'd still use cones, my hair is tangly and breaks without them. I'd rather have flatter, smoother hair that doesn't try and strangle me in my sleep vs. fluffy hair that I cant get a comb through.

All that being said most of my hair has been chemically dyed, it will be interesting when my hair is finally all virgin (will be a long time) whether I can go cone free then or if my hair just really likes the cones.

Oh! Sorry--I didn't realize this was for fine hair. I don't have fine hair--sorry --I hope I didn't mess up your poll.

I've noticed no discernible difference in the fullness of my own hair. I'm still using half -cones, half non-cones. :)

I have never been able to create volume. The only thing going off cones did was make my hair tanglier :p

non-silicone products make my hair "poofier", but I prefer the silicone products that make it more sleek and shiny.

no cones for me.

my hair is more fine than medium (even though i say f/m) and while cones definitely help with slip and sleekness, they also eliminate 90% of the wave... so i end up with flat, though pretty and easily detangled, hair.

i much prefer the body i get from shampoo bars and/or herbs, even if it means losing some of the swooshy slip and lasting 'detanglefication.'

The main difference I notice is that with cones, it's straighter.
I have fine hair, but a lot of it, so calming down the poofiness is more important. Oils are good for this.

Fine =/= thin.

Also, my hair is wavy and likes to hug my head no matter what I do to it (except if I keep it short and blowdry).

.

I voted the same - no difference. And no product has ever given me more volume.

I went off cones successfully by going to Aubrey Organics shamp & cond. But I do have to spray afterwards with a light oil to achieve the same tangle-freeness of cones.

I use non-cone as my regular conditioner, but when I use a cone conditioner occasionally (for extra slip/detangling), I don't notice a difference in volume. But from past experience I remember that using a coney conditioner regularly made my hair flatter in general.

My hair is more full without cones, but also much more tangly. I think I'm going back to cones just so I won't be struggling with these knots every day!

No difference, really. There's no volume with cones and no visible volume without cones. I'm cone-free (and generally free of nearly everything)nevertheless because my hair is awfully slippery anyway -with cones it's impossible.

My hair has volume with or without cones, but I don't remember the last time I used cones so I can't compare which one had more volume.

I don't use silicone products any more. My hair has more volume without silicone.

With silicones my hair was more limb and flat. It felt coated, and kind of dry but oily. Without them, my hair is more wawy and full, feels more "real"
I´ve never had an issue with tangles though, No problems with or without cones

Oh big time, switching to no cone makes quite a difference in creating more volume for me!

Silicones makes my hair completely flat and lifeless, it's horrible.

I don't notice a difference in volume, because I don't apply products with cones to my scalp or roots, but I *do* notice a big difference in tangles and breakage. My fine, porous, very thin hair will tangle at the drop of a hat, and with tangles comes snapping. But I do like reading about how differently everyone's hair responds to silicones. It reinforces for me the notion that we need to be informed about hair care and figure out what's best for the hair we have.

Cone-free products gave me much more volume. But after awhile I also noticed that my hair was much drier, frizzier and I had major static. I've now gone back to using some cones and while I have lost a little volume my hair is more moisturized and soft, not to mention much easier to detangle.

Non silicone has worked better for me. Too much silicone in a product ends up weighing my hair down. Compleat opposite of the goal!

For me, with cones I get more slip and shine, but less volume. And also seems more fragile. Without cones, I get less slip, but still not unmanageable, and more waves. With CV bars, I get alot more volume, and better up-do manageablility, and also alot more wave.

'Cones don't help my volume-challenged hair, but for what they do with my tangles, it's worth keeping them in my routine. :)

I said there was no difference in volume with cones vs no cones, but I will say that eliminating cones from my haircare routine has improved the condition of my hair greatly.

My hair is definitely better without the cones. It did take some getting used to the difference though.

I use cone conditioners on the length, but I don't put any cones on my scalp. You can have it both ways.....

It's the same with me.
Sometimes I feel I will never find the best product - well, I don't even need the best, but at least something I find good in the long run. Most of the products (cone or cone-free, even oils) only effective for a short time.
