This came about from a comment someone made to me that "I could put a different toy in my hair for a month without repeating." Now, I have a lot of toys, not sure there's that many though. So I thought I'd throw a challenge out here for my fellow toy addicts!

Use a different stick, fork, barrette or whatever every day in the month of April.

Personally, I'm not going to count elastics because I use them underneath so many different styles, but if there's someone out there who wears scrunchies every day and wants to show off their collection, I say go for it!. Hubby has promised to take a picture each day for me. I haven't decided yet whether to post a pic in this thread, or maybe make one post in this thread and edit it each day with a link to the pic, maybe put the pic in my blog? I'm open to suggestions.

Is anyone with me? This won't be any fun all by myself!

Edit: OK, looks like I have a few takers. I created a new album in Photobucket, here's the link:
http://s233.photobucket.com/albums/ee210/thetokenlady/April%20Hairtoys/ (http://s233.photobucket.com/albums/ee210/thetokenlady/April%20Hairtoys/)
and I guess I'll put a post in each day with a description and a link to the album so people can see what I'm wearing.

I don't have that many hairtoys! It would be fun thought to try, if I had them. :)

I will gladly sit back and watch the show. :drama: But as embee said, I do not have that many toys either. :violin: I could go for one week though. :wannabe:

But it would be cool to see photos. :)

I think I could join this challenge - if I split up a couple of my paired hairsticks, LOL!

I've never even participated in a hairstyle challenge, so this will be 2 for the price of one, so to speak!

I'll start a new album in my profile, and post a link to it on this thread. Also a description each day, like thetokenlady, I suppose.

Here's to hairtoy-rich April!

i have many more hairtoys than there are days in a month but i prefer to wear my hair down as much as possible while its still short enough to wear it down comveniently.... that 3 for a dollar hairtoy bin at the icing really gets me every time i go in... i think hey its only a dollar and i can get 6 hairsticks! ive gone overboard... i guess when my hair gets longer i will thank myself for buying so much stuff... i just bought 6 new metal hairsticks with cute glass thingys on the ends...
i just counted over 70 hairtoys... not counting decorative non functional toys

Another option is just to use ALL your toys and not repeating until you have worn them all.. If you have just a handful of them.. then go for a week or less? more?.. just wear them all!

As I read the posts, I went over my mental list of all the hairtoys I have.

Off the top of my head, with five scrunchies, 2 kanzashi, 3 ficcares and a half dozen or more sticks...I think I could go about three weeks. Some hold better than others, though, and I'm not sure if I could last.

I think I have enough to go for two months, except I don't wear my hair up very much right now. :) Maybe I'll join the challenge in summer when I wear it up all the time.

This is a perfect complement to my Hair Up for a Year Challenge. I'm not sure how many hairtoys I have, but I'll jump in and play anyway. Don't be too hard on me if I run out of toys before I run out of month, though.

Start date is tomorrow, April 1.

Well I've got 11 Ficcares and 11 Flexi8 so thats a start. I can do it because of the toys but I dont know if I can do it mentally... I kinda addicted to my Maximas... But the last few days I'm wearing my Little Egypt fork again, very comfy (and there are 3 Baerries on their way  )

OK, I've started! Today I'm wearing a dark red wooden fork by Tribu. The updo is a modified figure 8 (but though I may stretch to a month of hairtoys, I definitely cannot do that many different updos :o ).

Here's a link to my challenge album (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=680), with just the one pic in in for now. I plan to post links to daily pics in the future.

Here's a fun one for my first day--hair armor. I got this at a Ren Faire last fall. The really cool part is that when I got it the dragon was really close to the end of my hair and I had to wear the top shield really tight to my head. Now I'm wearing the first shield much further from my head and the dragon is really far from the ends. It's nice to see that my hair has grown quite a bit. :)

I'm willing to give this one a go once I've checked I've got enough hairtoys (and I fear I have) If I haven't I'll just keep doing it until I run out.

It's going to be a bit boring "and yet another pair of brownish shade ketylos...."

the trouble is that when i like a toy i buy a few identical ones or i buy it in every color it comes in.... i do this when i buy clothes too... i found some metal hairsticks i like and bought 6 of them... and i have a ton of little beak clips and a ton of flower pins that i painted all different colors with nailpolish...
ive started an x-day updo challenge today and im using 2 flower pins and a hairstick.... the flower pins could hold it up by themselves but i wanted to wear a stick today...

This is a great way to push me into using those toys I tend to overlook day after day. I think I have a month's worth! (In hair sticks ALONE!)

So, here's today, pair of hair picks with tiny golden balls, very dainty, feminine, yet set in and hold really well:

Wow, some beautiful stuff all ready! I was starting an album on Photobucket when I remembered I can have albums here, so now I have two.

Here's my LHC album: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=688

I'm posting an action shot and a pic of the toy itself. Eventually I'll have a kind of inventory of all my stuff.

Todays toy was the very first "good" hairtoy I ever bought. It's a Ficcare clip, Tortoiseshell pattern, in medium, holding a simple cinnabun. The beginning of my obsession with Nordstrom's.

I feel like I'm cheating a little bit, but Xander wanted me to wear double braids, so I did. I used two barrettes that are actually two of my very first hair toys from when I first decided to let my hair grow. So they aren't fancy, but they're functional and I've worn them a zillion times in the past 12 years. Here's the link to my Hairtoy Challenge Album:

The hard part of this April challenge for me is going to be not wearing the same stick tomorrow. I love this stick -- it has a beautiful blue crystal. I tend to get really attached to certain hair toys and wear them a LOT. But I suppose it will be good to give some of my other toys a turn, too.

Today's toy is a Ketylo Aquapearl in Green and Black, holding up something that kind of resembles a French Twist. Not sure how different mine will look, as Ketylos form the largest part of my collection, so today was a blue black aquapearl, holding a swirly bun. I'm usually a single sticker; in fact I only have one set of matched sticks. So if I use one as a single, then the two together, does that count as two tools?

Gosh, I feel like a piker. First of all, my pics didn't turn out, I discovered too late there was no memory card in the camera and I can't find the firewire to take them directly from the camera. (grrr.) That's not such a tragedy, though, as I haven't been very creative just yet. Apr 1 was a log roll with a brown ficcare beak. Apr. 2 was a tucked french braid held with teeny claw clips. Today is a french twist held with a chartreuse ficcare beak clip. Do you discern a pattern here? I do love my ficcare beaks. I've been true to the letter of the challenge, if not the spirit. I am hoping to be more creative tomorrow!

Here's the toy for today, Day #3. It's a hand-crafted slide from Goldenrod Jewelry, a wonderful purveyer of fine hair toys (and other jewelry) in the lovely mountains of Arkansas. I got this, two picks and a pair of earrings and just love them all!

The style is a simple wrap, which was twisted around one of the above-mentioned picks, then pulled the pick out and secured with the slide. Fun and different every time.

This sounds great to me! I thought the idea was to use and show off the hair toys, so if you wear a log roll with 30 different ficcares - one a day - you have been true to the letter of the challenge, right?! ;o)

I've got a bunch of toys I love, but don't use, so thought this would be a good opportunity for me to be "re-introduced" to them, so to speak. Some of them I "re-introduced" right onto the Swap Board.... :o)

If I can figure out how to do it(?), I'll start putting this stuff in an album. I feel a bit guilty, taking up all this space with silly pictures of ME! But I'm having trouble simply getting a sig pic to work, so don't hold your breath that I'll be able to do an entire album.....

Today was one of my France Luxe sticks -- the black one. Not a huge fan of these, as they are straight, and slippery. If I could, I would file it down, as it seems too long to me. I'm not a fan of the hairtool being visible from the front. Tpup's lazybun went up okay with this one, at least for now.

Hee, Peggy, I wish I had 30 different beak clips! I'd like to use this challenge to branch out a bit, though, and use some of the other pretty things I have. I have several very nice forks, and lots of sticks, but I have trouble using them so I tend to stick only with the ficcares - once I secure my hair with one of those babies, I know it's staying ALL DAY.

This challenge was made for you, you have the most amazing hairtoy collection.... and you USE them. I'm in awe.

April 2nd - TAH silver stick with owl bead, and a Pandora bead on the other end to hold it on. Pic here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=697&pictureid=7320).
April 3rd - indigo blue dymondwood stick by Sharky on ebay. Here is link to the ebay picture (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150213459100)

I meant to take action pics everyday, but I forgot to get new camera batteries so now I'm behind. I'll get caught up on the weekend. So far I've just used some variety of a figure 8 bun. I've got to learn some new updos.

If I change the bead on my silver TAH stick, does that count as a new toy? Here is a link (http://www.tah-handcrafted-jewelry.com/HairOrnaments/HairOrnaments-01.0.htm)to the place I got it from. It is a bit on the short side, and tends to be a bit top heavy and slippery. But adding a pandora bead on the other end (after it is in my hair) made it very secure. I held the bead on with 2 tiny black rubber rings.

Am definitely enjoying the pictures. Though gotta say, peggy's book collection is awfully SMALL.

Here's the Day 4 of the Hair Toy Challenge. This is a seriously massive comb. I didn't realize this until I received it. I am one of these people who has a problem with conceptualizing "space and size" of an object if I don't have that object right there in front of me.

Giving me the dimensions is totally useless - I'll pull out the trusty tape measure and block them out and still go into shock when the item arrives and is totally different from expected size!

Such was the case with this comb. I was expecting something "normal" even though I'd been told this was a big, BIG comb! But it doesn't matter, for I absolutely LOVE it!

Oh, my dear, dear girl! What you have seen is but the tip of a mountainous iceburg!

There's a huge bookcase in the kitchen that holds only cookbooks. There's a huge bookcase in both bedrooms in which fiction and non-fiction rest side-by-side.

The wall of the garage (there's no car in there) is lined with bookcases crammed with all sorts of books.

The opposite wall is stacked high in mover's boxes, full of books which have not been unpacked because, frankly, WHERE am I going to put anymore books??!!!

I LOVE to read, love my books and will never throw them away, so there they are, tons of them all over the place. My daughter will be throwing one heck of a garage sale one day when I've gone on to the big Book Dealer in the Sky. Let me know if you want your name on the list to be notified when this takes place..... ;o)

"Small" book collection, indeed........ ;o)

raederle: The color is really more grey than it looks in that light. What I think of as my real color (that is, before it started going grey) I really liked: light brown with golden and reddish natural highlights. At the moment, it's not so incredible loose. For one thing, it's still recovering from being trashed by London water for years so the tail is very thin. It *will* look really good in July 2010. :) I have a great pic of my hair in 1978, but unfortunately its b&w.

Think I'll pass on the "book-off" competition. Have a feeling it would involve having to do something with all those boxes, and just the thought of it wears me right out! ;o(

Do you happen to have the date in July, 2010, so I can mark the calendar and be sure to check it out?! ;o)

Your "original" hair color must have been very much like mine. It's always such a shock to me when I see how gray and silver its become - in the bathroom mirror, with the lights shining on it, my hair doesn't appear to have changed as much as it actually has, obviously!

I will say, though, that I like the silver, if it's not dulled by too much COing!

Your hair looks lovely to me, regardless of how you characterize it.

Today's style is with some cheap clip from Target. I don't really like to use clips, because, for me, they are not all that interesting in my hair. Sticks seem more intriguing -- perhaps because I never could figure out how anyone could put up long hair with just a stick, and no pins supporting it. Now, a clip takes all the mystery out of the equation. But, this is a decent enough tool, with the spring set far enough back that I don't usually get any hair caught up in it.

WendyG, the Double Flamingo Clip came from CVS. It was on the slightly nicer hair toy rounder and that's what it said it was on the label. I know that they are also called Taiwan clips around here. They are very similar to Ficcares in that the top part is curved to go over a big bump of hair. I know you can find similar clips on ebay usually listed as claws. I have another one that I'll be wearing later this month that I found there.

Day four, and another Ficcare style - this time a cobalt maxima, though it looks lighter than normal due to the sun.

The style is a very messy, sleep braid (French) flipped up and folded in. See here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=680&pictureid=7542).

Needless to say, I wanted to show off the lovely smoothness I achieved so today I did a half up with a gold dragonfly small flexi-8. Yesterday I wore my hair in a rope braid with a flexi-8 at the top.

Today I did something a bit different. I parted my hair off center, twisted each side& used two tortoise colored combs to hold the twists & then braided a three strand braid. It sort had that 40's vintage look. I will have to do this more often, because I got several compliments on it.:)

Today it's one of my current favorites, which sort of defeats the purpose of this challenge for me, which was to use the hair toys I normally ignore. But, after trying to do a braided Chinese bun (inspired by that fabulous hair that gets linked here so often, to MyTube, YouTube, TheyTube??) - THREE times - then an ordinary Chinese bun - TWICE - and my hair is simply too slippery to mess with today.

So, up it went into the trusty style I know will work, with the trusty toys I know will look good and call it a day!

These are bamboo and the one with the little hanging basket (sort of reminds me of a fancy version of the one from Pirates oCX2) actually was fashioned as a hair comb. The one above it started out life as a pin and I turned it into a comb.

I always wear these two together - think they set me back something like $1.50 - including shipping - and it was the bargain of the century, as far as I'm concerned. I love these little things!

Today I made a Rope braid. It's actually held with an elastic, because I can't make a rope braid without a ponytail first. Anyway, the barrette was bought for me by my very own Dad, who is otherwise known as The Man Who Does Not Shop. He got it while my parents were on a trip to the Panama Canal, I want to say it was while they were in Colombia. There are 4 different woods on it and it's very pretty, though the French clasp makes it difficult to wear these days.

Well, that may be a "cheap Goody slide" but it looks great in your beautiful hair!

You don't have to spend a lot of money to have great hair toys. Sometimes the very best turn out to be the ones you paid little for, or those that started life off as one thing and then turned into a hair toy along the way.... (I do this all the time with the great costume jewelry you can get so cheap!)

If you hadn't made a note of telling us, we'd never have known this slide was anything but a great hair toy!

Peggy, I love that topsy bun with the accent braid. You are so creative! I never can think of these things, and the things I do think of, I can't do!

Yesterday I was helping DD paint the nursery, so my "hair toy" was a bandanna tied around a tucked french braid. Today is a housework day, I've bunned my hair and secured it with a France Luxe chignon pin. Boring, but the weekends I don't bother much with hair or makeup.

Today I felt like leaving some of my hair down for some reason. What I did with it is kind of odd. I have trouble with claw clips, if I just gather my hair into a ponytail and clip it, the tail coming out of the top of the clip looks weird to me, and I can't seem to catch all of my hair if I try to make the ponytail point downward. So, I hung my head upside down and did a bit of a dutch braid starting at the nape of my neck. Once I got to the top and had my front hair in the braid I stood up and let the tail fall down the back of my head, and then caught it in the clip. This contained my hair a bit and shortened the tail so it's not blowing all over the place. (did that description make any sense?)

Anyways, claw clips are not one of my favorites, but I do like this one. It's just from the drugstore, or maybe Meijer's, but I like the light color and the flower handle.

Peggy - do you have instructions for the Topsy Braided Bun/Wrap/Thing? It looks lovely. Your hair and hair toys are always so artistic and pretty!

Gosh, aren't you nice - all of you with your kind compliments! Wow!

Weeeellll, let's see if I can post instructions that make sense.

1. Put your hair in a secured pony tail and, using the topsy tool (or a home fashioned one), pull the hair through down behind the pony tail. This is simply the Basic Topsy Tail.

2. Braid the length that's been pulled through - do not bother to secure the end of the braid, however.

3. Using the topsy tool, push it down through the band securing your hair, grab the tip of your braid in the tool and pull only this end through. This will secure the braid without having to add another band - it uses that original pony band to hold the braid.

4. You should now have a "looped" braid. Draw the braid around the left side of the topsy, across the top and around the right side, allowing a small loop of the braid to decorate the right. If you are using a decorative comb or sticks the style will require no further securing.

If you are allowing the style to go "on its own" (a perfectly reasonable thing to do, as it is pretty enough to wear on its own), you might want to put a pin in the sides to hold the braid piece in place.

This following picture gives a little more clear view of how that braid is arranged. You can pretty much do what you want with that braid, make the "bun" smaller, more stretched out, all based on how you arrange the braid.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj35/DCElliott/IveDiedGonetoHeavenHairFork.jpg

Hope this makes some sense!

AARRRGGGHHH!!!!! I spent HOURS on this mess! Why is it what I see in my mind's eye and what actually happens on my head are so often 180-degrees out?

It did give me the opportunity to use the "cheater" braid I've made from the hair I've been collecting. And don't get me started on that issue, oy, vey....!

I wanted a style to try out with this horn slide that's so gorgeous, but I haven't used and was going to sell. After this morning, I think I'm as determined as ever to sell it!

I can say this, however, for anyone concerned that it won't hold up a lot of hair, fear not! For under there is a wad that may never, ever come loose and is a mile thick. Getting the horn slide over it all was no problem!

Oh, well, Day 7, for what it's worth (incidentally, there are six braids working here - five "live," one "saved":

I skipped yesterday because I wore it down. But I just posted this picture on another thread for today's. I managed to use a Bine fork to hold up my hair (folded ponytail wrapped at the base). I rarely use it because I thought it's only good for French twist and I've outgrown that. I should give it a chance at other styles. :)

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n39/sapphire-o/Hairtoy%20challenge/apr06-wrappedpony.jpg

Holy Fred & Ethel, Sapphire-o! This is drop-dead AMAZING!! I find that, rather than getting great ideas of new styles and different toys, as I'd hoped to do from this thread, I'm getting depressed and frustrated!

My hair is a sorry excuse for a mop on the head compared to the likes of the rest of you! And this one today, well, if I had any way of getting out of this house I think I'd be getting my hair dyed.

Only it wouldn't look like yours and I'd be even MORE depressed, because I'd have to grow all this back out yet again!!!

On to the Bine: Maybe your hair is staight and strong enough for this not to be an issue, but when I had that one some time ago, it was a voracious eater of hair! I loved it, too, which made it worse, because I knew that to wear it was going to call for a sacrifice of a goodly chunk of hair.

However, it was so beautiful, I'd go ahead with it on the rare occasion, hoping that maybe this time it will be different. Nah, never happened.

Seeing this on you today really makes me miss that Bine, even with the damage it wrought!

Peggy, no, I didn't see your PM. Will look for it.

As for the leaf slide, it looks fine on you, but I think you have a similar problem to mine, in that it's the one color that doesn't contrast well with my hair, and like you I like a bit of drama. That was the other reason I sold it. I still think it's a great piece, though.

Aw you're all so nice. The thing is I'd never dare wearing this style out of the house, nice or not. Most of the hairdos don't last in my slippery hair. I'm always redoing my hair. A bun with a fork or a twist with a Ficcare is easy to fix even in the middle of a playground. Styles that takes more than 10 seconds, involve hand switching, pinning or a mirror just wouldn't work. That's why this thread is so cool. We all get to experiment and do various styles.

Peggy, I'm sure the Bine fork IS built for straight Asian hair. They're made in Korea, right? I found them quite pleasant and never snagged my hair at all. Although it's a pity they don't come in larger sizes. They're really only big enough for shoulder lengthed hair. You silver hair is lovely, I'm sure you know that. Sometimes I wish I can go play with your hair and hairtoys. :)

Here's mine for today, now that I'm home from setting up my Mother-In-Law's new computer. I got this stick at the Pontiac Arts, Beats & Eats Street Fair. It's a huge event that takes over downtown Pontiac on Labor Day weekend, lots of bands, food and artists. This artist was from Florida and said the stick is made from recycled wood from a 100-year-old barn. The wood is known as Dade County Pine, and it's very light, very strong, and practically waterproof. I fell in love with the beautiful grain. It's holding up a lopsided equilibrium bun.

Today I wore my Baerries cocobolo. I'm very sentimental about this one, as it's my first quality hairtool. I got it late November 2006. Of course, now I'm thinking it's not a great color for my hair's current color. But it's still a real pleasure to use, holds solidly, goes in easily, and I'm completely unaware of it until it's time to take it down.

I fell behind in my posting over the weekend, so here are pictures of the three hairtoys for the past three days.

Saturday I wore my Glitter Primavera Ficarre. I love, love, love my Ficarres--especially this one. The colors are amazing.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a382/magicatt/GlitterPrimavera-1.jpg

Sunday I wore a little black carved bone stick with a clear bead topper and realized that my hair is now too long for my shorter sticks. This was one of my favorite sticks too, but it was just barely holding. :( I guess that means I have to buy more sticks!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a382/magicatt/blackbonestick.jpg

And today I wore the first pair of real hair sticks I bought. They are from the now defunct handmadehairtoys.com (as was the black bone one, coming to think of it) and I immediately loved the colors and the fact that they are not really matched. One has fuchsia and yellow and the other is fuchsia and clear and the little green beads are on top in one and on the bottom in the other. I adore these sticks and wear them as both a pair and singles.

OK, Peggy, that does it - - I "need" a topsy tool!

I'm so bad, I don't have pictures. It doesn't matter, though, really, as I wear my hair the same nearly every day: peacock twist. But, I've been holding it with a variety of my pretty hair things. Today it's a pretty burgundy "crocodile leather" french barrette.

Mely, what size is your Flexi-8? I need more practice with mine!

Wendyg, I agree - indigo+charcoal=alabaster??? But whatever it's called, it looks great with the colour of your hair.

Oh, and Magicatt, I just love the glittery Ficcare!

Now, for day 8 of the challenge, I'm wearing a cinnabun (do I need to mention it's messy?) held with a metal faux-pearl topped stick (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=680&pictureid=7967). I got the stick for Christmas from my SO's mum. MIL of sorts, or MOL (mother-outa-law)... ;)

Today it's a high, braided topsy, with the braid loop left down. The hair toy is a miraculous teaming of nature's beauty and the artisan's craft - a Hippy Chick Creations hair buckle.

I had her fashion the oak leaf w/acorn dangles to be used in conjunction with the buckle. They began life in her wonderful imagination as a pair of earrings!

It was nearly impossible to get the entire style on the pic, but this is as close as I could get. Gives you some idea of what it looks like - and it really is cool, if I say so myself!.....

I think it is a large. Its actually a bit too big for me, but it will stay in if I make the right shape of bun. And I actually took the flexi 8 apart and put it back together with my own beads--which was quite finicky and difficult to do. In the end, it didn't really look much different than the original, even though it now has sterling and crystal beads.

I second wendyg's question--where ever did you get that barrette, magicatt? It is amazing.

Yesterday's - A knot bun held by chopsticks - real, disposable chopsticks. :) I used them to eat at a restaurant, later cleaned them up and sanded them. They're among my favorite sticks.

Today's - This is supposed to be an orchid bun, looks more like a squished infinity to me, held by a 60th street dymondwood fork. This fork holds like a rock. I think I might even wear it outside home sometime. :D

'fraid so. I wear barrettes reasonably often - they're useful for ponytails, especially in winter. I find that forks and stuff bang against my coat collar, and it's annoying. I imagine there'll be more. The jade one is pretty, but I'm afraid it's the one sort of shade that will blend into my hair color.

Oh boy... I need to catch up here....

Okay, I think I need to update for Day 6, 7 & 8-

Day 6 was wash day and I used on of my hairbands to hold my hair back. I'll have to take a picture of the hairband.

Day 7 was a braid with the wispies held back with 2 of my Scunci combs.

Day 8 was also a Xander day, so it was double braids. This week I wore my black barrettes on the sides (which are exactly like the ones I wore on Day 1, only a different color)

Sorry so boring, but I'm saving some of my purtiest stuff for vacation (Days 16-22):sun:

Peggy: it and another fancy carved fork were up for auction at the same time, and I thought this was the far nicer of the two. Rotating it probably won't make a lot of difference, as the stick won't be getting shorter - simply tighter! Pretty stick, though, so if it shows it's no big deal, right?

Today's hairtoy is probably my favorite one of all. My friend Linda gave me some hairsticks that her mother used to wear. Her mother passed away some years ago and the items were sitting in a drawer and she wears her hair too short for sticks. This is a wood stick with a silver topper that holds a piece of Labradorite. I had to polish the silver, and the stone was very scuffed. A stall at the flea market that sells stone beads and jewelry sold me some polishing compound and the worst of the scuffs are gone. This is really beautiful, and I think of my friend every time I wear it. :inlove:

There's a Dutch Braid into a Braided Bun thing going on here today. I couldn't believe that I was able to do this - you have no idea how long I've tried to learn, then just stopped. Last night I was messing with the hair, not really paying much attention, while watching t.v. and found that I could now do these braids!

Now, they're not great, but they're infinitely better than the last attempt. Funny how sometimes something will just "click" and make sense where seconds before you had no clue....

So there's two pics - one showing the entire style with the Pure Magic slide and prong the hair toys for Day 10. The second shows a bit more of the side braiding.

Now, how do I make this into a crown braid???!

magicatt: yes, it was lucky. Most of the time in airports I just head straight for the airline club. But PHX and TUS both have shops that sell Indian and southwestern stuff, and since I love it I stopped to look just in case - I knew you find beaded Indian barrettes online. I really didn't expect to find anything I liked so much and that was also small enough to actually fit my hair. Most of them have silver frames, and I like that this one doesn't.

I broke out a hairfork today, it's a very nice one and I haven't used it in over a year, I think.

Day 11 already! Boy, this month is racing along, isn't it?

Today is a thrown-together hair-prong wrap/twist thingie, which I do a lot of because it's quick, easy and I don't know it's there.

Holding up the mop and wisps is a pair of Goldenrod Jewelry prongs, favorites. Again, not wearing loved-but-too-often-ignored toys!

(Finally did it about an hour and a half ago...so it's dry now.)

(Pretend the jaw-dropping-in-awe face is inserted right here) That comb is mind-boggling, eye-grabbing, tongue-lancing, brain-bursting amazing! I've never seen anything like it before; it's just beautiful.

Was it a special order, or does he normally offer this sort of outstanding handiwork?

wendyg
April 11th, 2008, 01:53 PM
Peggy: kinda both. Sometime late last year both the monk and Graydog were doing various forks out of I think cocobolo and ebony with inlays of this type - rock painting swirly things and so on. And around the same time I'd seen this comb (http://www.blueheronwoods.com/SatinwoodLapis4prongHaircomb-pr-20.html) at BlueHeronWoods that I liked the colors of but not the shape. So I kind of put all those together and asked him to make this one using the colors but his own shape of fork and the inlay design of his choice. And this is what he made.

For today I wore another pair of sticks that my girlfriend gave me that had belonged to her mother (same friend as the silver/labradorite stick). These are square and made of the odd, kind of translucent plastic you see in old stuff. Even though they look different, it's just that the swirly pattern is a bit different on each side.

It's Day 12! CO washed my hair last night, so forget it today! Consequently, thought it might be a good time to try out the one and only knotted bun I have been able to figure out, in a failed attempt to bring the mop under some semblance of order/control.

So what we have here is my knotted bun thing (held with scroos) with this nice blue sparkly comb to set it off. You can almost see the Deco design in the triangular section of the comb; it's a pretty little thing.

If it had curl, waves, something but these stick out all over pieces of straight hair, I wouldn't mind it so much.

But then it stands to reason that my hair is hardly going to form a "halo" for ME!! (So, are you on your way with the mammoth stick?!)

I didn't get a picture of yesterdays style. It was just a simple 3 strand braid held at the top by a black leather slide. Here is a pic of the slide:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c121/Coppercurls1969/BlackLeatherSlide4-11-8.jpg

It has been really windy around here, so I have been wearing braids alot. Todays effort was double braids held by leather lacers. I know most people wear them higher up on the braid, but I wanted mine lower so it would "pull out" some of the shrinkage. My hair is still damp in the photo:

Day 13 finds my Topsy-into-Gibson Tuck adorned with the very first hair toy I ever made - A cascading pearl barrette. Pretty ambitious project for someone who had no clue what she was doing!

Just try getting a photo of this without breaking your arm - I dare you! This is the best I could do, the cascades kept getting cut out of the pic, or they were in and the barrette was cut out, a pain (literally!) and still a blur. Sorry.

Found this in a drawer last night when I was searching for a scrunchy at bedtime. Decided to resurrect it for the hair toy challenge and I don't think it looks all that bad, if I say so myself!

It's fascinating to see the large variations of "natural" on the 50+ gals' hair. I didn't pay much attention to it when young, which is no doubt normal.

Now that I fall into the crowd and have never chemically (or otherwise) colored my hair, it's been an amazing thing to watch, as it changes. Grown to appreciate the subtle shadowings and shine on all this beautiful full-blooming hair on LHC! ;o)

The site says that waist-length hair takes a 6-bead cinch. In my case, it's way too long - a four-bead would be a lot more sensible. But this is the first time I've gotten it to work at all - the key turned out to be putting in a ponytail holder at the top to help the hair cinch grip better. I don't think they designed these with anything like as fine hair as mine in mind.

Might as well add today's. It's a small Flexi-8. What do you call a French braid where you only pick up hair from one side? Is that a lace braid? Anyway, I did one on each side of my head and twisted the tails together and secured with the Flexi.

Nah, I get almost all my stuff in or from the US - I travel back a lot. Have a look at www.kyledesigns.com. You can pick the substrate color and type and also the design and color of the top metal layer, and he does two sizes. In fact, I probably should have gone for the smaller size, but one of the things I really like about French clips is that they're fairly accommodating to a wide range of hair thicknesses.

On the downhill slide of April and still lots of toys to choose from - which ones will not be featured, passed over, unphotographed, to develop terrible inferiority complexes, no doubt? The sad prospects for having more hair jewels than there are days in the month - and a shortened month, too!

So, today is a new acquisition made in March and it's the first time I've worn it. I love these playful style combs, and am wearing this in my trusty standby braid-wrapped topsy bun thingie....
