someone to cut my hair so that the curls lay right? I do not want to loose length but with mine being mostly all one length I cannot get the style I want to best show off the curls.
I have only had my hair cut once by a professional back in the 8th grade and it was horrible she supposedly knew how to cut curly hair but obviously had NO idea what she was doing. I ended up going from waist length hair to shorter than shoulder length :(
So are there any tricks to finding someone who knows what they are doing or is it just the luck of the draw?
If this is the wrong spot for this I apologize and please point me to the right spot.

You can do some research online- there are forums specifically for people with curly hair. If you can find other members that live in your area, they may be able to give you recommendations. Also, if you see someone with great, curly hair- ask them! It will be a compliment to them and might help you find a good stylist.

I've heard of Devacut, who are supposed to do cuts specially for wavy/curly hair. You could try looking them up.

I always have a similar problem when I want to get my hair cut. A lot of people are just unfamiliar with curly or wavy hair.
The best thing if you have to just randomly choose someone? Pick someone who also has curly hair. Chances are they will understand that your hair is going to lay differently because of the curl, and you'll get a better cut. It sounds biased, but sometimes if you don't have any recommendations from friends or family, it's a more bearable option (though I've had straight-haired stylists do a good job too, usually someone I went to through recommendation). You could also tell them to cut it dry so that you can watch and make sure they are doing it how you want it---when they do it wet it's difficult to tell and sometimes you can wind up with something you deeply regret.
As for keeping it long but having more style, I've always gone with layers. Easier to maintain, less boring, and you can keep overall length if you are really adamant about it.
Hope that helps :)
