View Full Version : Does your hair swing? I'm so envious!

If there is just one thing that I envy about long straight or wavy hair, it's its "swingability".
My hair seems to move as a mass if that makes sense lol! The only way I can get some of this swingability in my severely fairytaling lengths is to twirl it into ringlets. If it is natural, like in my siggy pic, its not so swingy.
I so envy this phenomenon in my swingable sisters. :cheese:

What does this swing mean?

Botticelli Gold
February 11th, 2009, 05:21 PM
Like when it's hanging free of your body, it will kind of swing or move backwards and forwards. Does that make sense? Heavier hair probably swings a lot more than feathery light hair. Oh gee, :( im not sure im making sense lol.

I hear you. I'm wavy, but my hair moves like yours, kind of as a big chunk. I sometimes miss the feeling of flat ironed hair - its feels loose and free in comparison.

My hair either clings or floats. It may be straight, but the fineness makes it not want to swing, I suppose.

I envy 'swingibility', too!

Botticelli Gold

I guess what I mean is hair that is kind of floppy. if I hold a hunk of my hair up, it doesnt start flopping down for quit a few inches. having all that air in my curls seems to hinder the swingability factor. Honestly it looks like I have sooo much more hair than I actually do.

Yes! :D "floats" is a good way of putting it. My hair floats rather than swings.

I know what you mean. Like the product commercials where that glassy hair gets swung about like some sort of waterfall.... Here on LHC, LadyLongLocks has swingable hair. It's amazing.

I suppose I could swing my hair a bit, but it doesn't really have that heavy, liquid thing going on.

I'm a swinger!

Wait....that's not what I meant.

It swings best after a flatiorning, but even without, it swings when it's down.
(When I was little, I woud intentionally bounce when I walked, JUST to make it swing. Vain creature.)

LOL I can have swingy hair, if I comb when wet, to straighten my hair. With curls it goes as a whole and acts more like a spring!!!:D
Bouncy, but not swing, like what the OP means. Both have their pluses and negatives. I like my wavy curls though!;)

Well, Boticelli, I saw a woman walking outside my office the other day with hair that looked similar to yours (curls, ringlets, etc.) and was somewhere around hip length. Her ends were swinging back and forth away and back towards her tailbone in the gap between BSL and Butt. Incredible hair! I bet yours does swing - it's just you never see it!!

I too long for hair that swings, specifically between BSL and butt, but I've never had even waist length hair, and am currently stuck getting rid of crappy ends at BSL.

The kind of hair swinging I love is when it flip flops backwards and forwards in the small of their back between BSL and tailbone, when the hair-owner walks. Ooh I love that and I long for it. Still, that's just one of those dreams I only dare let out of my brain but once in a while.

Hey I envy curls that are curls not ratty waves that I straighten after almost every wash.

LOL! atlantaz3. That reminds me I saw an episode of the other medium show, Ghost Whisperer (whoever does the casting for that show must love long hair!), and there was a girl playing a bit part with amazingly swingy, TB straight blonde hair! I flipped out and went to go search for her name obsessively on imdb, found her name and looked up her myspace page...only to find she must have flat ironed her hair for the part because she has Shakira like hair normally - way curly. Gorgeous. So now I have noticed often that people with really swingy hair have actually flattened it.

By the same token back when I used to blow-fry my hair, it was way swingy as long as the atmosphere remained dry.

I love the glassy, 'slippery' hair in hair commercials, but my hair NEVER behaves that way, even when it's been flatironed to within an inch of its life. My hair is VERY clingy, and even when it's doused with smoothing products it tends to clump up.

I do look forward to having long floaty hair, though! I remember walking around in a cloud of my own curls back when I had long hair, and I cannot wait for that...

Yup. Mine swings and swoops and flies. I think it is an attribute of fine, straight, long hair. The swing can be fun or a nuisance, depending on whether my hair is in the mood to play nice or more in the mood to tangle. When it wants to tangle, it is much better off safely enclosed in a bun. Buns don't swing.

I just posted a video of me walking and I guess my hair swings and floats.
It is not super thick at the ends so I was happy to see it move like it does.
I made it slow motion too.

LadyLongLocks your hair never ceases to amaze me! That is the best swinging, floaty hair I have ever seen!:thudpile:

Sometimes I let my hair out and swing back and forth in fornt of the mirror to try and create floaty hair, but it never works and I always end up looking like a freak. :hmm:

My sister's hair (shoulder length, blunt, thick hemline, straight, thick, and fine) swings. Mine has no weight whatsoever. It either clings, clumps into strings, or floats.

I always thought it was a fine hair thing, but it might be straight vs wavy. BF has wavier, thicker hair than me, but also F, and his doesn't really swing either.

Miss Botticelli, your hair is so pretty, I think you don't have to worry about swing! :) My hair is wavy and occasionally swings but everyday walking won't cause it. I have to do something major action-wise, to get it to go. Otherwise, it seems to move as a whole like yours does.

Hmm, must figure out how to get more swingability...

Beautiful hair, LadyLongLocks! And... lovely swing. Mine would do that except at classic it's, uhm, rather caught against my body. My ponytails do swing amazingly — swish, swish, swish. My former hairdresser told me more than once while working on my hair that she just always wanted her hair to swing like mine. The first time she mentioned it I was a little stunned. You mean, some hair doesn't swing? But I learned that some doesn't. What did I know?

Me too! People are always talking about my thick hair which makes me LOL. My hair is quite thin.

I wouldn't trade my hair's amazing ability to look larger than life for swingability.
I used to straighten it sometimes and it STILL wouldn't swing or flop about the way I wanted.

Yes, I'm like Katze, Deborah and others here. Unless I:

Load up very clean and just-dry (but not bone dry) hair just right with leave-ins, including oils and shine-inducers
Then curl it using heat
Then wear a shirt or dress made of very slippery material
And stand very straight
And don't move my head to the left or the right muchIf I do that, I can get my hair to swing a little bit, for a little while. But, shortly, it will start to tangle and cling and fly here there and everywhere. Which is why I don't wear my hair down more than once or twice a year.

My braid swings :D Dangerously so, I've been told! ;) It's been named Dragon-Tail...

I don't think I've got swingable hair, though, as it's not heavy and straight. However, when I wear it loose, I hardly move my head for fear of tangling ;), so I don't really know!

BTW, Botticelli Gold, as others have mentioned, you have nothing to be envious about, with such beautiful hair!

Deborah
February 12th, 2009, 11:54 AM
I don't think anyone should worry about this. My hair has a lot of swing, but not because I do anything. It is just a matter of hair type. I don't deliberately swing it or make it move. When I move my body, my hair just does it's own thing. If your hair does not swing, it is because you have a different type of hair. Some curlies like that their hair 'clumps', as they put it. I don't want my hair to 'clump'. It's fine as it is. Vive la difference!

Love YOUR hair, clumpy, swingy, heavy, light, fine, coarse, whatever. They are all good. :)

My hair swings beautifully. Sometimes. Than I come home, pleased with how pretty it looked, and how well it behaved...and find out I have a giant snarl the size of my fist grinning demonically at me.

It does well for short periods of time, but after awhile, the silky straight glossy hair turns into a mess.

Hi, everyone! I changed my avatar just for this post! It needed to be updated, anyway, since my hair had gained a little length and it was also showing more of the blond in my hair. I don’t have enough posts for attachments yet.

I hope everyone can see my avatar {as of Feb., 2009} okay. I know it’s not all together like a rippling curtain or waterfall, but I was pleasantly surprised by the movement of my hair in this picture. I didn’t think it moved that much, even when I’m dancing.

I think I’m fairly animated when I move my head as well as the rest of me, which causes my hair to swing sometimes. Also, a while back, I do remember Tyra Banks saying something to her "Top Model" contestants about having "an invisible wind machine." I think she was saying that you can make your hair look like it has life by the way you move your head and body. Have a good hair day! :coolblue:

This is how I know my hair is healthy. When it was damaged, it sort of just hung there and just got wispy and frizzy in the wind. Now, it swings--not as much as some people here probably, but the movement is totally different now that I care for my hair properly.
