View Full Version : Hairstyles suitable for sports?

As my hair grows longer, I'm in need of new hairstyles, especially for when I'm doing sports (I do vaulting, which in short is gymnastics on a horse). Untill now, the only two styles that have worked out all right are ponytail and french braid - and now I'm having trouble with the ponytail because my hair gets tangled and I'm afraid it causes too much damage. I haven't yet found any buns that stay. The main problem is, I can't have a lot of "stuff" in my hair, since my sport is a bit rough and hairsticks and forks and such might break or poke somebody's eyes out...
So, I'm just wondering if you know any hairstyles that are really secure, without a lot of accessories in it?
How do you wear your hair for such activities?

I've been having the same problem since I've started working out again, but my sport isn't as rough as yours (I do fitness, yay -_-')
Styles use are
*french braid
*rope braid
*normal braid
*segment ponytail (don't know if it's also called like that in English..)
*sock bun
I wear the sock bun all the time. You don't have to use expensive hairtoys to secure it, and I don't think it'll poke anyone's eyes out :D
Still, I'm looking for some sport-hairstyles too, so I'll be watching this thread

I use this one when I did Yoga and it was perfect for keeping it out of my way. For working out, a ponytail or bun may be best, but here is this one you can give it a shot.

Since it's not a contact sport, could you get away with using hair scroos to bun your hair? They screw into the hair, so they don't come out very easily (unlike pins).

I like doing braided bun with U-pins for sports. Well, for sports that don't require helmets or masks. I haven't quite figured out what to do for those. :eyebrows:

If it's long enough you might want to try taping it. The only accessory is ribbon, which won't poke anyone. I made a tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqbAdvL8kME . If it's not long enough to go all the way around your head, don't fret. You can do French pigtails (or regular ones) and wrap them around the back and sew them that way...or go over the top and do the milk maid thing. Securing your hair by sewing it with ribbon is super secure and comfy and you won't have to worry about losing pins or things when doing anything vigorous.

For PE class, when I never know what we'll be doing, or soccer, I braid and then use an elastic to double/triple/quadruple up the length of the braid. (It's a common method for creating a 'bun' among today's youth. You start like making a pony tail, but don't bring the end all the way through. I repeat a few times so that it's more bun-sized.) Then it's at the base of my head, allowing the back of my head to rest on things when we do crunches and such, but is also short enough to get in the way. (Depending on hair slipperiness and grippiness of elastics, it may take a few tries to get the method down, and I can't promise it WILL work.)
So yeah. For less rough sports (running, for instance) I put it up in a log roll with a Ficcare.

You might want to consider french or dutch braid pigtails. Depending upon your length, you could put a small bun in the back, secured with elastics.

when my daughter dances, I put her hair in an easy secure bun with a hair tool called "EZ Bun" that's basically a wire with cloth sewed around it and a hole through the middle of the cloth part. You slip your ponytail through the hole and slide it towards the ends of your hair. Then you just sort of roll it up, shape it into a circle and twist the ends to secure the bun. It holds through just about anything and there is nothing sharp or hard to get in your way. Your hair doesn't need to be super long, either.
I've seen homemade versions of them on Etsy and craft fairs.
Edit: you might check out a dance store. The one I used to go to for my daughter's stuff had lots of these sorts of EZ-Bun things for sale, as well as many other tools for making easy tight buns.

I had a few of these until just recently - my mom turned me on to them. If you do have waist-length hair or longer, they get complicated because, well, my arms weren't long enough  So my mom has three more EZ Buns now.
They do work magnificently though. Mom's hair is right below shoulder and she loves them.

I usually braid my hair (french, dutch or simple english braid) when I work out. I do bodypump and such, so buns at the back of my head will not allow me to lie on the bench. sometimes I do a ponytail low on the nape and lift it out of the way when I'm putting the bar on my shoulders for squats etc.
when I run or dance, I braid it very tightly - I once stupidly enough did a ponytail for a dance class and while it was very cool to have my hair whipping about with head turns etc, the tangles were INSANE. same with running.

Hah! For a while I was wearing a ponytail for swing dance, but one time I was helping out with a class and the teacher was demonstrating a move called a toss-across, where the leader passes the follower back and forth in front of him several times. With each pass my hair, which had gotten pretty long by then, whipped him in the face. When he finally said, "That thing's dangerous!" (fortunately with a smile on his face), I knew it was time to do something else with the hair.

yeah, I know what you mean - I did competitive ballroom dancing as a child and back then the rule was TIGHT BUNS. no loose hair anywhere. to put the girls into submission, we were told horror stories of boys who had been blinded by their partner's hair whipping over their faces and cutting their eyeballs in half... urban legends mostly, but for pre-teen girls those worked well. not a strand of hair was loose in the competitive dancing world in the 80ies.

I was also going to suggest the EZ bun also or something similar that one you can get at Claires that wraps your hair into a bun.
Also I think the africa butterfly holds really well and securely or the hairzing.
Would clippies work? If you braid and bun and secure with little clippies. That always holds tight for me.

I agree with Physicschick -- hairscroos hold a bun well, and are really unlikely to fall out. However, you still wouldn't want to land on them.
If you need to stick with soft hair accessories, you always go with buns held by scrunchies, and you could braid that ponytail, which will definitely cut down on the tangles and takes less time than a french braid might.
I find braided pigtails nice for weight lifting, because I can move them to the front or back of my shoulders as needed, and they don't leave any bulk on the back of my head.

Vaulting is a really amazing sport. Problem is, you can't really use anything solid. I think a scrunchie bun might be best, but I'm not sure how it will hold if you are doing flips etc.
My thinking is a french braid and pull the tail up behind the portion that is against your scalp and secure with a strong barrette or even do it like you do a horse's tail....braid in some wool the same color as your hair, pull through and tie/knot. This will definitly stay secure when you are doing leaps etc.
I have the utmost admiration for those who do vaulting. Not an easy sport!

I would recommend trying these, too. You can get them on ebay - just search for hair scroos.
I teach an athletic dance form that's a fusion of bollywood, hip hop, and bellydance, and I cannot have any hair loose, wobbly, or any hair toys that can fly out. This is my no-fail do - a figure 8 near the crown of my head (so it doesn't get in the way when we're on the floor doing crunches or whatnot) secured with 2 or 3 scroos.

For horse back, I do a braid secured at top and bottom, or my new style is the multi-band ponytail. Everything else I have tried has NOT worked with a helmet.

I weight train pretty seriously, and I HATE having to worry about my hair. Since I'm also shedding a good bit lately, I don't like anything that 'tugs' at my scalp at all. What I like to do is wear a scarf that contains all my hair, kind of Turkish style. I hold my hair in a lose scrunchie bun before putting the scarf over my head; I shape the scarf (a big rectangle of silk) in a triangle, with the short point behind my head... twist the side points of the triangle at either side of my head and cross them behind my head, then pull them up and over just behind my hairline and tie off to the side (if that makes sense) Stays put great for me, and no tugging!

I didn't catch how long your hair was, but what I do is coil my hair into a very tight bun and put a speedo lycra swim cap over it (like a bun cover) using a hairtie to hold that in place, then pull the edges tight. It gives the bun cover a scrunchie/ruffly look around the edges, and (in my personal opinion) doesn't look all that bad either. Stays put for days, even with the weight of my hair.

Pony Scrubs (www.blueskyscrubs.com) work for me. Pretty secure and very very protective.

For ballet classes I wear sort of a Gibraltar bun secured with 4-6 scroos. For trampolining I used to wear a braided bun with about the same amount of scroos.

Sock buns and french braids work well for me.

I always recommend this french braid technique for sports. The advantage is even with your braid doubled underneath, you can fit a helmet on. There's no hairtoys at all holding it-just a nice secure ribbon-and it doesn't have a long tail hanging down.
http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/lhtuck.htm
In the picture, it looks like they just double the braid tail under itself and wind it into place with ribbon. But I keep tucking until my whole braid tail is tucked under the french braided part on top. I make sure the ribbon gets wound around all of it, so the tail is secure under my crown hair.
It ends up looking like I have short hair in a french braid, because there's no tail left at all.
Does that make sense?
