So I remember when I was in 5th grade a girl next to me ended up with head lice and her dad actually shaved her head(poor girl). Anyways, of course the fact that I sat right next to her in class, I was bound to get head lice. I had gotten it before. My mom had found info on mayo helping to kill them and get them out of the hair. So we tried it. I had Mayo in my hair for about 2 hours. I remember very well washing my hair out with cold water and having my hair feel softer than it ever had. Of course I was too young to take into consideration using it as a treatment. I'm considering trying it maybe once or twice a month now. I was just curious whether anyone else does it? And how does it work for you? Do you think it would help with a dandruff problem? I've also been considering using ACV. Like maybe do ACV one week then mayo the next, then ACV the next etc(is that too often?). Or maybe switch them every two weeks? I'm just not sure. I need advice! I'm farely new to the whole doing treatments and such. I can't do CO as my hair gets sooo oily that it looks like its wet all the time. I tried it earlier this week and just let it be oily all week, because I thought maybe that would help the dandruff a little. But I felt gross the whole time because my hair just felt and looked gross so I don't think I'll be doing that very often. Any advice would be great. It's difficult to have dandruff but oily hair as most of the treatments for dandruff are for dry hair heads.

I do use it and love it. I'm not overly fond of the smell of mayo, but when I want a super good conditioning I definitely use it. I probably do it once or twice a year. And I know it works for lice too because when I was subbing, one parent slathered all of her boys' heads with it and made them wear shower caps for 12 hours. They were back in school the next day and all were lice free. I think it suffocates the little buggers.

I've never used it but I've heard it's very good for the hair.
I'm not sure if this is a protein treatment, could someone clear that up for me ? :)

From This link (http://old.cbbqa.org/recipes/Mayonnaise.html)

The Best Foods Mayonnaise ingredients label shows that it contains the following ingredients, which are listed in the quantity order in which they occur:

Soybean oil, whole eggs, vinegar, water, egg yolks, salt, sugar, lemon juice, natural flavors, calcium disodium EDTA (used to protect quality).

As far as protein goes, the eggs would definitely have something to do with it. Also, since it has oil and lemon juice, it might have just a whole lot of good stuff for your hair all in one :)

Wow, reading the ingredients makes me want to try it!

ETA: And thanks a lot for the info!

I have not tried it myself, but many years ago a woman friend who had lovely long hair told me that she used it once for twice a month as a conditioner. I did notice that she had lovely hair, but I never noticed if she smelled like a salad afterwards. :)

Read here (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?p=179930#post179930) for heidi w.'s Mayonnaise Hair Wash. You can ignore the comments about chelating. They were specifically for someone with salt spray damage. :)

hmmm....I'm logged in but everytime I attempt to look at her profile it won't let me. She says to look at her hair journal, is that in her profile? And why does it not let me look at her profile? It only seems to do this to me when I'm looking at stuff in the archives.

oh never mind I see that she typed out the formula on the post. I was just confused because she said to find her recipe in her hair journal or something... although I still think its weird that I cant get to peoples profiles form the archives.

Mayo is great for your hair, I love using it. It does smell a bit but I have never had the scent be noticeable to those around me after the first wash.
Just make sure you get real full-fat mayo.

I remember using mayo a few times when I was in jr high. I loved the result but couldn't stand the smell.

I had horrible results. The smell stuck for 4 days and got more rotten each day, instead of fading. I washed every day, desperate to get it out. DH gave me a hug, then pulled back proclaiming my hair smelled like vomit!!! :( My hair also looked like I had dipped my head in a bucket of oil! Whatever good things it might have done were undone with all the washing I had to do to get rid of the smell and greasyness. I don't think I could ever get myself to give it another try!

Wouldn't the salt be drying?

I've used it before, but the thing is I *hate* mayo and won't even eat it. The smell is somewhat unpleasant, but I mix it with a conditioner. It really is an effective treatment though, my hair is always softer and shinier after using it. Never greasy...I'm not sure if my hair could ever be greasy lol!

No, there isn't a high enough concentration of salt to be drying.

I've used it with success. But then I used it too much, and it wasn't so good. I guess it will beome of those once-in-a-while things for me.

Mayo was the very first thing I tried after finding this board less than a month ago. I've done it twice now at two week intervals. I think it's great - olive oil, egg and lemon juice. What's not to like?

Here's what I've done when I've used it. Unlike the linked post above, I put the mayo on to dry hair. I leave it there for about 30 minutes (haven't tried longer yet, but I might). I then rinse really thoroughly, then CWC, then vinegar rinse, and then a thorough cold rinse. I haven't had any problems with odour, and I love the softness and thickness!

(Of course, I'm a total newbie to proper hair care. The softness and thickness is relative to simple lather-rinse-repeat-condition, which is what I've done for my entire life.)

I've used it on and off for years. I find it very good, but have never done it too frequently. I should imagine the eggy content might bother some hair types eventually. Doesn't too much protein make the hair hard?

Lately, I've been hijacked by the Lush Hair Masks - which definitely have mayo type ingredients in, plus loads of EO's.

Accordingly, I've made a Mayo mix with a spoon of one of those Lush masks added - just for the fragrance really. I've also added cinnamon powder to it - and some of my own EO's - and whipped it all up. It's waiting outside in the cold room for me to rescue it and put it on my hair!

Next Mayo, I'll just add my own EO's from scratch and leave the Lush completely out of it...

I fancy getting some cinnamon/nutmeg EO's for this kind of thing.

I used once and never again. My soft shampoo was not able to wash it all out so I ended up with hair which looked like NW for 14 days without giving the scalp time to adjust and it smelled like something vomited of babies. I had to wash again and since this experience I only used mayo for my bread :D

I remember using mayo years ago, and I found it really difficult to get out of my hair, and I don't like the smell. I didn't find it made my hair much softer either.

maybe some peopls hair holds onto smell better than others? I'm going to try heidi w.'s treatment. I think the addition of ACV before and after the mayo, probably keeps the smell from sticking to your hair as much. Or at least I hope so. Though my hair never smells like anything. Sometimes it will pick up the smells of my shampoos and conditioners but if it does it only lasts for a day, so I don't think I will have to worry about smell. I think I do distinctly remember my hair smelling like Mayo for a day or two after wards, but it wasn't overwhelming so I'm gonna go for it! Wish me luck!

From heidi w.'s description, it sounds like she puts it on her length only and not her scalp. That area usually has enough oils. Maybe that will help keep any smell from lingering. Anyway, good luck, and be sure to report back!

Ah yes. This is what I tend to do anyway, and may explain why I've never had 'vomit' hair! ;)

I had heard mayo was good for your hair but I had never tried it myself. I will have to give this a go and see how my hair takes to it!

I just won't use it around my fiancee when he is hungry! *hides hair*

I tried it a couple of times. you have to use abit more of shampoo after wards. The effect is best seen after your second shower.

Has anyone tried this using a homemade mayo recipe?

I used to do it. But it's messy and I'm lazy. Never really had a smell problem though.

I used selfmade mayo as my hair was really stressed after a lot of chemical coloring, start of no-cones and lice-killing-lotion (how is this called?). I took an egg, a bit ACV, a bit honey, a bit of conditioner and stirred it well with my hand blender, when this mix was creamy i started to stir in the oil. I got a very soft and creamy treatment, which i left on my dusted hair for 30 min to 1,5 hour. I washed out with shampoo because of the terrible smell of the egg. I made the experience that uch heavy treatments are easier to wash out when a you put in a bit conditioner.

This treatment helped my hair after the hard times. It gave strength and shine.

I think, i'll made a mayo-treatment soon, i always liked it.

I never tried mayo from the supermarket, cause there so many ingredients which i don't want to put in my hair. And the mayo smells *shudder*

i have used mayo and miracle whip both as deep conditioners. they both work really well for me - but you have to be sure to wash them out very well or you will smell like mayo or miracle whip afterwards. i was never totally sure if al that washing it required was negating the conditioning effects of the treatment
maybe if you washed it out with CO instead of shampoo or poo bars (which is what i was using) - seems a smelly conditioner would help in terms of the smell too ;)
