View Full Version : Show me your shrinkage!

My hair was extra curly yesterday, so I took this picture:

I know that I'm not the only one who has to deal with this - so please show me your shrinkage. :D

(I hope that the picture is showing, I'm not sure that this will work.)

I can't see it :(

This should be a good thread - I have big curls but little shrinkage myself (I am just going to have to start taking photos! oh no, I'm going to join the ranks of hair-photo hoarders! :p)

Wow. From someone with stick-straight hair, I can only guess you feel like your hair never grows!

That said, I wish I had some curl or at least some wave. I'd love to have something softer around my face and it would be *great* to have ends that curled a bit. This straight-as-paint-brush-bristles thing can get old, especially when sticking out of an otherwise perfectly nice updo! ;)

My camera baterries just died so I had to use my cell phone, and this was taken right after I woke up, so my hair is a bit of a hot mess, but you get the idea.

I don't have a pic right now. I'll have to do one when I have time.

My hair is less than 2 inches from waist when pulled straight, but barely past my shoulders when left alone.

I figure that if I aim for tailbone when straight, I should get around BSL when curly. So that is my hair length goal.

Okay off topic shrinkage story. I was teaching metallurgy to a class once and we were talking about forging and then quenching and tempering. And I said something to the effect of, "So what happens when it gets dropped into cold water."

Student, "Shinkage!"

I don't think I have any current pictures, as I just plain don't let my hair shrink up as much as it wants to, because it would make me unhappy (due to tangle issues, not length-envy. ;) ) Lemme see if I can find an old one.

Dry, I only lose 2" in overall length to shrinkage because the hair at the back of my neck is straight and wavy. In some of the more curly areas, I lose up to 5".

Wet, my hair is a lot longer for some reason, but I don't count that. I think it stretches!

Thanks! Good eye, they actually are twisted. My hair is curly, but to get it that tubular I use a ton of gel (enough that my hair is slimy :p) and twist small sections from root to tip. Then when it's all dry I scrunch out the crunchiness.

February 4th, 2009, 06:03 PM
So when curlies measure do you stretch out your hair to get an accurate measurement?

girlcat36
February 4th, 2009, 06:35 PM
I take both measurements. Pulled straight for accuracy, and to see if it has actually grown at all. Then a dry, curly measurement, because I always wear it that way.
So I am at BSL with a straight measurement, but only APL when curly. I won't call it BSL until it is BSL dry and curly.

Thank you. :) Yeah, my shrunken hair is only about 1/4 - 1/5 of its stretched length, but I almost never wear it completely shrunken. I usually wear twist outs, so I hope one day my twist outs can hang to APL. But I think I'll have to grow to waist to see even that.

You can see my shrinkage in my sig pics. I hate shrinkage! Im longer than waist when straight, at waist when my hair is wet, and bsl or shorter when dry depending on how curly my hair is that day! Im trying to grow my hair out to waist or hip while dry and curly, and I don't even want to think about how long my hair actually has to be to reach that length while curly. Probably at my butt or longer!

Jezebel, I love your curls, especially in your dry hair.

What is a "twist out"?

A twist out is the hair that results from twisting the hair in many sections, waiting for the hair to set, and then undoing the twists. My chunky twist outs use 15-20 twists, medium around 40, small 60+. You get the best definition if twisted on wet hair. It looks like this:

Shrinkage is just another word for "spring factor". Waves and curls require additional length because they have to "wrap" around the curls.

You can have perfectly healthy hair with lots of shrinkage. :D

In some hair, like mine, additionally dryness can cause increased shrinkage, but since it's abnormal you catch it pretty quickly.

I think I have something like five inches of shrinkage. My hair goes from APL unstretched to BSL stretched. It's a little bit frustrating because my hair will have to measure about 40 or so inches just to appear waist length :/

I don't have a picture, and taking one with my length of hair would be incredibly awkward to do on my own!

But anyways, I have noticed that if I "stretch" my hair, my measurement is about one inch longer than if I don't stretch it. And my hair is pretty straight after a wash and before I have braided it.

It depends on where the hair on my head is. The hair in back has more shrinkage since my wavy hair forms spirals. Spirals are starting to form on the hair on my sides though. I have never tried to physically calculate it though. Maybe about couple of inches.

that's just average though. It really depends on the day, the weather, the humidity, how recently I washed..and if I was to flat iron, it would be even longer than when I just pull it down with my fingers.

I don't like to complain because it is definitely true that on the days that it has the most shrinkage, it looks the prettiest. By far. I get the most compliments on those days. so its not just me that thinks so. the beauty of curly hair is often in the spirals and twists themselves rather in how long it is (though I LOVE) long hair.

Ha, my 1b hair does actually have about an inch of shrinkage, somehow. It might be because of having to go over the contours of the body, or because the ends tend to flip a little. Nothing obvious, though! And certainly not worthy of posting.

I recently did rag curls (disaster) and when I took them out my hair - usually mid-thigh length - didn't even reach waist! It was then that I finally understood shrinkage. Wish I'd been able to get some pics but I was in more of a rush than usual that morning, and they'd loosened up to between waist and tailbone when I got home again.

I took a wet hair picture recently and my hair is just grazing APL, I think I'll call it when my hair hits 60cm because it's where I measured where APL

I feel like the 1cm difference could be almost more frustrating, because you can see your full length, but then the ends flip out or curl in. :) With curls, I think it's more common to just accept you are always working with two drastically different lengths!

My shrinkage isn't worth getting a pic for either. My hair is about 1b right now because of silicones (it looks fairly straight but with body, not much wavage going on), I still get about 2 in/5 cm shrinkage which is more than I'd expect :shrug but nothing compared to you curlies!

YMMV but personally, the less products the more wave for me. Shampoo only = the most wave (almost 2B-ish)! I've heard others get more curl with more protein and moisture products though, so it differs.

Oh, maybe your hair is more prone to be weighted down than mine... I don't see that difference with just shampoo and shampoo + conditioner + other. It's just more... Frizzy I guess. Yes I know about moisture and protein and I include both in a certain way in my routine.
When I'll use my next shampoo (without cones) I'll try to don't use contioner, it's been a while since the last time.

I meant that some (or a lot) of people see a difference if they use moisture or protein products, but for me I don't particularly see a difference in my wave pattern - everything just weighs it down  I just have a realllly weak curl pattern!!

I've noticed since I've been natural and my hair is naturally wavy, and my natural hair type is 2c/3a, and my waves right now have a lot of shrinkage! Especially, when it's wet and then dries. I have curly hair that draws up to shoulder length but when I blow dry it straight it stretches to MBL!
